The Contenders, Part I

The Contenders, Part I : wedding rochester wedding dress 100 392 100_392

On a blustery winter day, I made the trek to the Monique Lhuillier trunk show at Roma Sposa Atelier. I had a wonderful experience with the ladies at this chic bridal boutique, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a very personal, friendly, no-pressure experience. Since this was no ordinary shopping day, I came prepared not only with women whose opinion I valued and trusted, but also neutral colored underwear and a strapless bra. In retrospect, I also wish I had brought a pair of heels (even though the boutique had some in the dressing room, my size 6 feet were swimming in them).

Although I came in specifically to look at the Monet, it only made sense to take advantage of the trunk show and keep an open mind. Together with BM Laura, BM Tanya, and my mom, I picked a few different styles of gowns, and the runway show began! Unfortunately, Roma Sposa has a no photo policy, so we’ll have to use our imaginations and the internet to recreate this adventure.

I tried on the fabulous Scarlet that Mrs. Gummi Bear wore for her wedding:

Beautiful, but I felt awfully exposed in the back. And, although my girls are quite small, I was still concerned about keeping them in check to prevent a Janet Jackson from happening at the wedding. Yikes!

I shimmied into Dolce from her Spring 2010 collection:

I liked how this one looked on me, but I couldn’t walk in it! The area where the skirt blossomed out hit me at the knees and was like having a rope around my legs. I think the dress was intended to be a trumpet fit, but on my 5’3″ frame it morphed into a constricting mermaid style. I could only manage a feeble shuffle, which would make dancing near impossible.

My mom’s pick was Noel:

This dress was actually very similar to the Monet in style. However, it was…denser. Even comparing the two on their hangers, the fabric was thicker on the Noel, and overall the dress was much, much heavier. The weight was even more pronounced once I put it on, as the weight of the train felt like my 25 pound cat was sitting on it.

All three were undoubtedly beautiful, but two dresses remained in the changing room: “my” Monet, and an unexpected contender lurking in the wings.

Which of these dresses do you like best? Did you find your dress during your first shopping experience?

Those dresses are beautiful - congrats on getting your dress!! I know how you feel - I actually never thought I would wear a lace gown, but after trying on everything else, I fell in love with a beautiful lace Maggie Sottero gown.

I can’t wait to see which one you chose! Yes, I ended up buying the fourth dress I tried on at my very first appointment. Bada-bing bada-boom. It’s great to be prepared for the appointment, and I think even more importantly, to take only a few women you trust.
But let’s get down to business here…you wear a size 6 shoe? That means all shoes look adorable on you teeny tiny feet, and that makes me a wee bit jealous :)

@Miss Oatmeal: Totally with you on only taking a few women. Whenever I watch ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ I get squirmy when there’s a herd of people in tow. And, I do have itty-bitty feet (lol). Depending on the brand I can even wear size 5.5…it makes bargain shoe shopping a breeze!

I do love the Scarlet but I wouldn’t probably feel comfortable with my chest area so exposed either. I can’t wait to see which gown you choose. The Monet or is the unexpected contender the dress in the first photo?
And I agree with Miss Oatmeal, you must have adorable feet. My big wide feet don’t look so cute in shoes. It’s more of a challenge to find cute and comfortable heels. ;)

@SandraMarie_1986: The unexpected contender is coming up in the last installment of this “crap, I can’t make a decision” series. ;)

I am totally impressed by your super preparedness when showing up! I’m pretty sure I had on bright undies and tube socks ;-). I totally found my dress during that first shopping experience.

Anyway! I remember Gummi’s dress! It was sooooo pretty!

I cannot wait to see your Monet!

25 pound cat! Sounds like an awesome animal. I thought my cat was a chunker at 15 lbs :)

Everyone loves fat cats more anyway.

I’m 5′3″, and I had the same problem with the one trumpet dress I tried on. I hated that knees-tied-together feeling, I couldn’t imagine wearing a mermaid dress.
