Mrs. Eggs Benedict, Seattle Age and Occupation: 29, Attorney Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Attorney Engagement Date: December 5, 2009 Wedding Date: February 2011 Venue: IslandWood About Me: I'm a Northwest girl who spends my time goofing around with Mr. Eggs Benedict and our dog, hiking, traveling, drinking wine and planning a wedding that will showcase the best of what the Pacific Northwest has to offer. I also love photography, beating Mr. Eggs Bene at Mario Kart, and watching the most ridiculous natural disaster flicks you can think of (seriously, how can you deny the awesomeness that is The Core or 2012?? That's right, you can't). We are planning our weekend wedding adventure at an environmental educational center, and I can't wait for the fun to begin!
About Mrs. Eggs Benedict

Flowers, that is. Here’s the deal. I love flowers. Love, love, love them! When my sister and I lived together while we were both in grad school, I had more fresh flowers in my life than ever before (or since—ahem, Mr. Bene!). See, my sister loves flowers as much as I do, but the difference is she remembers to actually get them and display them in the house. So every couple of weeks she would come home with a beautiful bouquet, and it would grace our table or find its home on a bookshelf. And she never failed at finding a great bargain for her floral lovelies, so it was never a very expensive endeavor.

I, on the other hand, always forget how much I like to have flowers around until someone else puts them out. So I don’t usually buy them for myself. I also have a hard time buying them when I know that they’re going to die a week later. (Or I keep them longer because I can’t bear to throw them out yet, thus causing me to have to pick up all the dead blooms that have fallen on the table.)

Which brings me to our wedding flowers. I love big, full, fluffy flowers like peonies. I also love the crisp, clean look of calla lilies. But, lest anyone forget, B and I are getting married in February.

So while I would love to have my bouquet look like these…

I Want Them, I Love Them, But I Don't Think I'll Have (Many of) Them : wedding flowers seattle Pinkpe

I Want Them, I Love Them, But I Don't Think I'll Have (Many of) Them : wedding flowers seattle Pinkan

Found here and here

…or perhaps some lovely calla lily bouquets like these…

I Want Them, I Love Them, But I Don't Think I'll Have (Many of) Them : wedding flowers seattle Callal

I Want Them, I Love Them, But I Don't Think I'll Have (Many of) Them : wedding flowers seattle Purple

Found here and here

…I am fairly confident that none of those bouquets are in the cards for me, for several reasons. Peonies have a pretty short window in which they are in season, and even though I am not smart when it comes to flowers, I’m pretty confident in saying that February is not part of that in-season window (at least not in the Northwest). As for calla lilies, I have no idea when they are actually in season, but I’m pretty sure that they are really expensive per stem. I would love to be corrected if I’m wrong, but it’s OK that these will only be bouquets that I will drool over when I look at pictures on the Interwebs, rather than in my wedding photos.

Because there are other flowers I love that I at least remember seeing in grocery stores last February…though I’m not sure if that was due to our incredibly mild winter or if they’re always around then. What flowers am I talking about? These!

Oh, how I love tulips! They just always seem so bright and happy and cheery—especially when it’s gray and raining outside. And on a bright spring day when the sun is out and their colors are everywhere? Love! However, I have heard that tulips are a difficult flower to work with, as their stems can break pretty easily. So I’m not actually sure that this is a viable option, but it’s an option that could be so pretty! I mean, look how lovely this bouquet is:

So my current plan for the wedding flowers is to have a long talk with my mom and my aunt. See, my aunt is a fabulous decorator/designer/creator of all things beautiful, and she has graciously offered to help figure out a plan of attack (which I am so incredibly grateful for). Part of me wants to order flowers wholesale and put them together ourselves. Another part of me thinks that that will just add stress to what could already be a very stressful few days leading up to the wedding. So I’m not positive that we’re going to go that route yet. But given my propensity toward simpler, single-flower bouquets, I think we could pull it off. I’ll have to look more into that, though…

But what does this “less is more” attitude toward flowers mean for my centerpiece ideas? Well, I’m pretty sure I know how I want the tables to look, but I’m still refining that idea, so I’ll show it to you soon!

Have you considered garden/cabbage roses? They will give you the full, lush look you like with the peonies, without the expense, and they are always in season.

Calla lilies are pretty pricey!

Tulips are a pain to work with. Their stems are crazy, and they always grow toward the light…you can make the bouquet the night before, and the next day it looks totally different, LOL!

Don’t despair for calla lilies! My sister got married in September, and she had them. She was planning on getting them from Costco, but ended up getting fake ones online! Since calla lilies are so smooth, with a nice sheen, she was able to find ones that were made out of plastic. They looked incredibly real, and everyone complimented her on them. The seller she got hers from is out of business, but I’m sure you could find similar ones. Plus, real ones don’t have much of a scent, so you wouldn’t even be missing out on that.

Oh flowers!!! I love them senseless and I am diligently training my darling to buy them for me… It is slowly working so don’t lose all hopes with Mr Bene… All your choices are beautiful. You can mix calla lilies with other flowers and keep the price of the bouquet more reasonable than having only those. I am obsessed with gardenias but they are so fragile and expensive… Oh well. Flowers are always beautiful anyway!

I bought some tulips at the grocery store in freezing Chicago on Christmas Eve. They’re always in season.

I didn’t find them hard to work with at all, and none of their stems broke on me. They opened up in about 24 hours and lasted over a week before they looked really sad. I think it’s a good option for you.

Ranunculus are on the fluffier side and are in season during February, as well as your beloved tuplips. Also, don’t cringe when I say it bc I was a nonbeliever….but if done the right way, a bouquet full of carnations can also look fluffy. Google them in the images section. I swear, I never ever considered carnations as a wedding flower until I saw the photos, I’ve never seen them like that…and you really really can’t beat the price! Good Luck.

We are doing roses and ranuculus (which are fluffy like peonies!) AND we are going to do them ourselves. I’ve been collecting vases from Goodwill and I’m almost there!

It really depends on how many bouquets you want and how big you want them. I’m going for simple elegance as my theme so I am just using calla lilies as my flowers.

I’m going to get fake ones for the boutonniere’s, most likely. Then doing two submerged ones in my centerpieces. For my bridesmaids I plan to only use 3-5 flowers per girl at the most for their bouquets. Then for mine I’m thinking of using 5-13 flowers depending how I feel at the time. So not that many flowers, probably 40-60.

I’m planning to buy my flowers at wholesale online, most likely Costco. So they’ll end up costing me between $100-$200. They aren’t going to be too expensive or much work, since I just want the flowers tied together with ribbon and thats it.

It seems like these days if you order online you can get flowers at just about anytime of the year. Best of luck figuring out what you want to do, all your options sound beautiful.

OH! Sounds like you’re in the same boat I was in– I really wanted simple, all one flower bouquets and arrangements. We ended up going through Julia Miller (a florist family friend in Tacoma). She has a DIY package where she’ll order the flowers, and then guide you and whoever you have helping you (lots of hands are needed) as you make your flowers. It was cheaper than ordering the flowers wholesale, I got exactly what I wanted, and she showed us how to keep them fresh from Thursday (flower day)-Saturday(wedding day). It was tons of fun, great bonding for the ladies, and only took a two hours. PM me if you want more info. :)

I <3 PEONIES!!!! well….. you CAN get any flower anytime if you want to pay!! :) i can sympathize though… we have a destination wedding planned (in WDW in EIGHTEEN DAYS!! GULP), so not only is noone really around after the wedding to, like, take home a centerpiece or enjoy the flowers for even a day after the wedding, we are going on a cruise the day after and i can’t even bring my bouquet!!! i am not entirely committed to tossiong it into the trash (i am favoring the tearful confiscation of it at security when boarding the cruise ship), i really am not interested in “preserving” it either… soooooo, i’m doing seasonal flowers (roses and cheaper ranunculus) and zero centerpiece or ceremony floral. as a consolation, all the ladies i am getting corsages for are getting gardenias which should stink up the place real pretty!!!

Tulips are so cute and friendly! To be fair, my mom was in charge of flowers, we got them from a wholesaler and she put together all the centerpieces and my bouquet, and she got a MAD idea to decorate the wedding arch - it completely stressed her out! If you can find someone that’s willing to take on the stress that’s not you, it was a really cheap option for us. We spent like $400 and had TONS of flowers.

I read one of your later post on you love for candles. I love them too by the way. An idea is to do half of your table with flowers and the other half of your tables with candles. Not just a few candles though. A TON of candles. Maybe eight or12 containers of candles. You could also add a couple of containers of peonies with the candles. Just a thought to stretch your budget. I’m excited to see what you, and the ladies come up with

Those tulips are beautiful. I wanted to originally do Gerbera daisies, but they’re too floppy. How do you keep tulips from going floppy? We used red & white Costco roses b/c they were cheap, classic, & always in season! (I splurged on an uber puny bouquet of Lily of the Valley -I fell in love with them before I realized they are the Rolls Royce of wedding flowers due to scarcity & price. My MIL grows them wild in her yard…in May. My wedding was in late June. The difference…oh about $100 smackers. BUT, we handtied 20 stems of LotV together with an ivory organdy ribbon, & it was lovely. We did have to make a larger toss bouquet b/c it would have been ridiculous to throw my tiny bouquet!)

Really, every flower has its own specification. It enormously does its work.I keep many of these kinds in my own house and garden. When the weather is not it self than I move them to more optimistic place where they can hold them selves for a period.Regards,Dant !

Love your post Miss Bene! :) I too love love tulips - which is the only flower I’m having at my wedding. :) At the same time..I’m considering having smallish tulip bouquets for me and my BM’s…then having candle type centerpieces. :) I may have some vases w. 1 or 3 tuilps in it around the venue as well though. I’m trying to work with our budget….and trying to be simpler in the decor….

but if I could - personally - I think I’d have tons of tulips… ;)

Though anyway - good luck! Excited to hear what you choose to do…

I love tulips!! My wedding was in June and my top choices were out of season including cherry blossoms which bloomed early because of the crazy heat last year!

OH how I love flowers and I LOVE tulips!! We are getting married in early May, and for me tulips are a must! Living in the northeast they just scream…SPRING IS HERE!! I have peony bushes all over my yard and though I love them…they don’t bloom til early May and don’t last very long. I don’t think tulips are hard to work with at all….and with having a wedding in February it would give a feeling that warm weather is just around the corner…I’m sure whatever you decide will be lovely. Good Luck!!

The tulips are lovely! If you stick with those and find a simple way to use them for the centerpieces I’m sure you can pull it off doing it yourself before the wedding! Only thing I’ve read somewhere is that tulips tend to “lose shape”, as in the stem gets very wobbly (not sure if it’s correct as I don’t know anything about flowers, but I’d ask a florist just to make sure!)

Matching the flowers you want to the season you are getting married can be tricky, and then getting them for a price that reasonably fits your budget can be even harder. A great florist or event florist can help you know what you can reasonably expect based on your location and time of year. Check out this new site that helps you find the best florist, flowers, and price in your area (www.bidflowers.com). Enter your floral design request and budget, then have florists come to you with their ideas.
