Mrs. Jaguar's Picture
Mrs. Jaguar, Sydney Age and Occupation: 27, Primary School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, IT Consultant Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Curzon Hall About Me: I'm an Australian girl who is a self-proclaimed nerd, loves all things stationery and would be lost without books, music and the internet. Mr. Jaguar and I have been together for the past eight years and he finally popped the question last August. Hurrah! We currently live in Sydney, Australia with our adorable cat who thinks he's a person. We're a couple who likes to multi-task: we've been planning a wedding abroad, a permanent move from London to Sydney, and preparing to build our own home all at the same time. Travelling makes me giddy...as does Mr. Jaguar, of course!
About Mrs. Jaguar

I’ve been super lucky in the travel department these past few months, that’s for sure. And while Mr. Jaguar and I still haven’t decided what we’re going to do for our official honeymoon in June, we both agreed that we had an absolutely amazing pre-wedding-moon together! It was long, it was hectic, it was fast-paced, and it was perfect for us.

I thought I’d throw some ideas out there for another continent altogether that I visited just before we frolicked around North America—Europe! I should point out that during this particular trip, I was without the other half—I traveled with a girlfriend. However, Mr. Jaguar and I have done Europe together (on a similar guided tour) on a prior occasion, and had an amazing time as a couple.

There are a few ways you can explore Europe, depending on your time-frame and your budget.

First things first: work out how long you want to visit & how much you want to spend! You’ll also need to remember to incorporate your flights over to Europe, too: we always used Skyscanner to figure out the best option, but you can also try Kayak or Cheap Flights if you want to double-check your deals. After that, the choice is yours!

If you’re wanting to do it yourself with your sweetheart and build your own honeymoon, the possibilities are endless. The beautiful thing about Europe is that flights between countries are relatively cheap, and you can also forgo flying altogether and make use of the rail system to get from city to city. While Mr. Jaguar and I organised short breaks to Europe, we found the following websites to be the most useful:

  • Expedia – great deals on hotels in particular. Also, if you’re planning on starting from London, you can sometimes pick up cheap packages that also include your travel option. We used them for countries like Copenhagen, Switzerland & Belgium, because they worked out cheaper than catching the train/flying over there & booking separate hotels ourselves.
  • Travelsphere – it’s a UK based company, but they run dozens of short European tours, mostly encompassing coach travel and accommodation as well.
  • Hostelbooker – yes, you read that right: HOSTEL-booker. If hostelling it isn’t your thing, don’t freak out—a huge amount of the hotels listed on this website are actually in regular hotels: and you can even request private rooms. We’ve booked rooms with them in New York City, Queensland, Australia, and in Paris, France—specifically PRIVATE rooms, and each time we’ve been in a standard old hotel room. Not bad, and  at a fraction of the cost you’d find elsewhere.
  • Viator – the best place for activities and tours! Just plug in the country you’re visiting, and you’ve got yourself a whole slew of options. Again from personal experience, we’ve used them for mountain exploring in Switzerland. My brother also used them for an afternoon exploration of Rome…by Segway!
  • Contiki – definitely not for everyone, but if you want bang for your buck—this is how to do it. The only catch is that it’s an ‘under 35’ tour company, so you tend to be travelling with younger coach-mates. Any guided tour is all about what you make of it: you can be social and out with your tour-mates all the time, or you can use it for the included accommodation and transfers, and do your own thing. That’s what we did, and we had an absolute ball. (Prices here are in AUD, so you’d need to contact them for prices in your currency of choice.)

No matter how you do it, Europe is incredible. My most recent trip was 24 days long, and we covered eleven countries in that time—it was super quick, it was intense, but wow, was it an experience. And only in Europe can you visit so many amazing and unique places that are so close to each other. Here are some of my favourites from my travels, can you pick ‘em? (Caution: photo heavy!)

“matrimonial” or double/queen size beds can be found at some hostels. Unless you require plush quarters, you can often get a better deal by making due with fewer star ratings.

Also, it’s TOTALLY worth it to upgrade your train tickets on overnight travels. What’s the point of being somewhere if you’re tired and sore from sleeping in a nice chair? Those chairs are fine for day trips, but not so much for sleeping in if you plan to do major sightseeing the next day.

I plan everything using Tripadvisor! And make sure to get an ISIC card if you qualify too! I buy my meals at grocery stores to save money. You can pick up a quick pastry roll in the morning for breakfast and a freshly made sandwich for lunch at the grocery store. Save your meal budget for going out to a nice restaurant for dinner. If I want to go out for a drink at a pub in Europe but I don’t have a lot of drinking money I usually ask for a 1/2 pint instead of the normal pint size. A 1/2 pint of cider or beer only costs like 1.25 pounds in England, which is where I usually travel.
Also, to save money you can do so many things for free. There are tons of free museums and galleries in Europe. I love to tour old churches too. Many of them charge admission fees. But the best way to get around that is to attend a service or mass there. Then you get to see the church for free! This works every time at all the big famous churches in Europe.

@violarulz: TOTALLY agree. Sleeper train journeys are horrific without sucking it up & paying for the upgrade. Good tip!

@amariem25: Can’t believe I forgot to mentioned Trip Advisor! I also forgot to throw out there that the ’star ratings’ for European hotels tend to be different to what you’d expect in the US, UK or Australia. It’s a whole different system!

Mmmmm. Cider. Heart! :)

Lovely photos, by the way! As image consultants we’re constantly on the lookout for new styles for our clients, even those who travel to Europe. We endorse the idea of train travel and believe the best accommodations are worth the extra fee. As we advise clients at manhattanmakeovers.com such a trip will allow you to expand both your cultural and fashion horizons, and that can only be a good thing.

Your pictures have given me yet another shot of the travel bug - as if I really needed it. All of them are great, but I think your shot of the gondola in what I assume is Venice is particularly striking. Ah, to go to Italy some day…

@hrev2010: Well done! The pebbly beach is Nice, in Southern France. :)

@miss.qwerty: I adore Venice! It’s worth saving like a crazy woman and eating baked beans for the months beforehand - that’s how we funded our first trip!!

Those are some of my favorites, too! :) When I backpacked through Europe in college we chose to do it via rail, with a Eurail pass that let us travel to up to 5 countries in 15 days for a bargain. They have a similar pass for Japan, too :)

P.S. I did not like that beach in Nice - I was paranoid little crabs and things were going to come out of the rocks all the time!

P.P.S. I found a cheaper ticket to New Orleans through that Skyscanner site, thanks!

Definitely use tripadvisor for recs on hotels and things to do.
Also, if you rent a car, you MUST call or visit autoeurope.com. We got a car with all the insurance for less money than we could have gotten it without through any company directly. Plus their customer service was great and the car we ended up with was better than we thought it would be. Huge savings for us (ended up being cheaper than getting a Eurail pass.

@Mrs. Glasses: Hooray! So glad you got a good deal on the flight. (Also: jealous?!) I nearly broke my ankle trying to get my feet into the Mediterranean in Nice - all part of the experience, haha.

@mcnetn3: Thanks for the car tip! We never drove in Europe - always preferred doing things by foot or public transport. That’s mainly because they drive on the right hand side (like the Northern Hemisphere!) whereas I’m used to the other way around. Wimpy driver, right here. :)

My friend and I went Interrailing a couple of years back - http://www.interrailnet.com/ - possibly the same one as Mrs Glasses? You buy one big pass which lets you on to pretty much any train in Europe and you travel at your leisure! It was awesome because all the train stations are in the centres, whereas all the airports are a long way out of the cities and totally awkward to get to and from. And much cheaper than flights, too!

Go Europe! I’m from Ireland so not quite as warm and fabulous as all the places that you’ve gone to. I’d recommend that you pick at least one place to spend a little longer in so that you really get the chance to explore it. Enjoy the local food, you don’t have to eat at the fanciest restaurants, usually the smaller ones where there are a lot of locals eating are the best.
That cathedral in Barcelona is incredible isn’t it? I spend a week there over the summer and was busy with things to see every day

Check Ryanair for inter-Europe flights, though the airports may be a bit out of the way from where you want to end up. But not always, though– it put us right where we wanted to be in SW Ireland, and again near Cinque Terre with a flight to Pisa!

Great list! There’s also lots of budget saving tips per country, but for overall Europe I would also recommend booking.com and Ryanair (as mentioned above).
Another really good and cheap airline is Air Berlin - great prices and they still serve you coffee and snacks for free!
Lastly, Edreams.com gives good flight comparisons.
