Music Part 1: Dance With Me

January 9th, 2011 @ 12:05 pm by Mrs. Lox

So, let’s talk about music. When I started wedding planning, I didn’t really think about this. In the past I’ve gone traditional, and I’ve gone nonexistent. But it was never something I thought about a great deal. For some reason, this time it seems more important.

With our first venue, the owner said we could have a jazz band, and we were so excited about everything else that we accepted that without thinking. Live music! Fun! That was the extent of our consideration. But after we got home and before I started panicking about the venue, I started to have doubts. Would a jazz band be able to make people dance the night away? Would they play the ceremony too? If not, who would? And what about MC duties…would the band do that too? Or would I have to make other arrangements? And what if they didn’t know our first-dance song?

Since the first-dance song was the only thing I knew was decided, I fixated and started to panic. Mr. Lox tried to calm me down. He tried to tell me we’d figure it out. But my type-A self was not comforted. And the thing about the first-dance song is that the version was extremely important to me. It had to be one exact song, and I wasn’t letting go.

Now, my obsession with the music is too great to contain in one post. But since I know our first-dance song, I can share that here. This is what we (meaning I, from the moment I first heard it years ago) have always wanted.

The words speak to me. It is exactly what I’ve always wanted my future spouse to feel for me, and it’s what I have felt for Mr. Lox for a long time. I truly truly love this song. I cry alone in my car whenever it comes on my iPod! Yes, I’m a sap.

Did you always know what your first-dance song would be? Or was it something you two had to figure out together? How did you decide?

ah yes, Come What May! This song speaks to my heart as well. My fiance and I used to sing it together in the car, whenever we had the chance. Love it–and don’t let go of your vision!

OMG! I totally listened to this song every time I was feeling stressed about wedding planning. No matter what comes our way, the love that Mr. G and I have for each other will be forever! So romantic and fantastic!

I LOVE MOULIN ROUGE!!!

And I was greatly considering that song too XD Haven’t discussed it yet with the s.o., so we’ll have to see how that goes.

Great choice!

i used to always want At Last by Etta James but after seeing a couple friends use it then it lost it’s specialness to me. My husband actually chose our song: Something, by the Beatles. I thought it was such a sweet choice and so we had our song! we had a live band too but I felt that both our first dance choice as well as the father/daughter choice (Dream Operator, by Talking Heads) should really be played from the original recordings. The songs are too good to just dance to a cover. So the band had the ability to hook our iPod up to their system and play those songs for us and then they started playing after that when the real party started. i dont know what your plans are, but our band wasn’t playing thru dinner, we just had an iPod playlist going. same with the cocktail hour, so this worked perfectly. it wasn’t like the band had to stop, play our dance songs, and then start again. for the ceremony we also had live acoustic music played by 2 of our lovely friends, but they were separate from the reception band.

That’s crazy. I was actually going to have this as my first dance song and then I realized that a couple of my friends and people I work with had done or or were going to do it. And then I realized it wasn’t as original as I had thought. Everyone and their mom has done it, unfortunately.

Are we long lost twins? LOVE LOVE LOVE Moulin Rouge. Come What May was OUR first dance too! I have a handful of movies I watch literally over and over again and Moulin Rouge is one of them (have it on my iPod and watch it at work sometimes too!). Before I met my husband - I’d watch that scene over and over again - Come What May was the epitome of what I wanted in life. So I KNEW that would be our first dance song. And my husband really didn’t care about choosing any of the songs, so I got my way!
GREAT CHOICE! lol. :D

This song wasn’t our first dance song - but it was our first karaoke number that we did together at the reception. It’s one of my favs too. Good choice!

I love how many people are into this song!

@Theresa: Nothing unfortunate. Honestly, I don’t care so much about being original. I just care about staying true to myself and this song is me. :)

LOVE Moulin Rouge and Come What May. My sister and I fight over who gets to sing the girl part/who is the boy : )
We ended up using Crazy For You by Madonna…different, but totally us.

I’m sure a jazz band could make a wonderful version of the song (and original, although I saw you wrote this is not important for you). Does this band have a female singer?
We’re still undecided on the first song but we are looking for something that our live band can play, as we think it will be nice to dance to live music and will feel more authentic (to us).
