Envelope Issues

January 10th, 2011 @ 12:51 pm by Ms. Sloth

With the wedding only four months away, I’ve started to pay a lot of attention to the details. Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time on our invitations and envelopes. You’ll see photos of the whole shebang in due time, but today I wanted to discuss the damned envelopes.

Calligraphy isn’t in the budget, unfortunately, so I figured that I’d just run the actual envelopes through the printer. I even fell in love with a font enough to spend almost $60 on it. Helloooooo, Lady Rene!

It seemed foolproof. A beautiful font, digitally printed on to our envelopes.

So I tested it out. And then the envelopes wouldn’t go through the printer without getting stuck.

Nooooooooooo!

After a mini-tantrum, I weighed my options:

  1. Rearrange the budget and spring for a calligrapher. We really didn’t want to spend any more money than necessary on this.
  2. Address the envelopes by hand myself. Anyone who has ever seen me write anything knows that this is a terrible idea. My chicken scratch is NOT pretty.
  3. Create and print pretty labels. And this was the way to go.

I don’t have InDesign or any other layout program on my computer, so I had to create my labels in Photoshop Elements. It was kind of annoying but not terribly difficult. Check it out:

The next step will be to buy some sticky paper, print them out, and cut ’em with an X-Acto knife or paper cutter.

Once the invitations are all printed and assembled, I’ll be showing you the finished product! Yeeeee!

Did you ever have to change your plans in the middle of a DIY project?

I was planning to do wrap around address labels since 1. a calligrapher isn’t in the budget 2. my handwriting is horrible 3. I didn’t even want to attempt fighting with my printer. But now I am thinking I might change up the shape of the label now that I see my invitations coming together . . .

I’m going to do pretty labels as well. I’ve never been able to get envelopes to go through a printer properly so labels it is! I think yours look really pretty.

I want to do labels too! But I’m torn between trying to fight with pre-cut labels or trying to cut them myself. Both have their drawbacks in my opinion.
I love your labels, btw, the banner is super cute and fun!

Those look awesome! I looooove Lady Rene. And I love bunting. So I’m basically in love with your labels.
FYI, Staples sticker paper (http://www.staples.com/Staples-Sticker-Paper/product_490429) was the cheapest I was able to find, by far.

Wow. Way to go. That’s definitely showing some awesome creativity in the face of adversity. Is there no way to print them on pre-cut mailing labels so that you don’t have to cut each one yourself? Or are you looking for custom shaping to each label? Very awesome solution, I will have to keep that in mind.

I made my own wrap around labels as well, mainly because I didn’t want to pay for calligraphy for only 25 envelopes (small wedding), and mine are navy, so I couldn’t print directly onto them. I love how my labels turned out too! I printed them 5 to a sheet, cut them, and ran them through my xyron to turn them into stickers. I am finding other projects to use the xyron for too, such as cupcake flags, so it is a great tool!

Cute labels! One suggestion - print doubles of the labels, so you can use them on your thank you notes. My bridesmaid (who was awesome and did our saves) did this for me and it made getting our thank-you notes in the mail a little faster and easier.

These are gonna rock! Are you going to print them on clear label paper? That would look pretty nifty!

The labels turned out great, you made a fantastic save out of an irritating situation. We also decided to print the addresses on the invitations, but were having trouble at first because the ink of the printer was getting smudged on the envelope (also major annoyance). After losing some envelopes we figured out that we had to insert them into the printer face down, top part first. This was the only way to print them without smudges, because I think it was passing more easily through the printer..

While I had wrote the address and a little note on every single one of our STDs… never again. I start to regress to my barely legible note-taking handwriting and then my hand cramps up and I get cranky.
Instead FMIL will do them since she actually like Calligraphy and if that fails, take them to the printing service on campus.

My solution was to create an image in photoshop, then copy and paste the image into a table in a word document, cut along the lines by hand or paper cutter and attach with spray adhesive. cheap and easy!

that stinks! I used the printer to print the names and address on our envelopes and it worked great … grant it i did have to put them in one at a time but it was worth it

I’m not sure what kind of envelopes you have but I went to print out addresses on ours last night and the envelopes were supposed to go through horizontally but they wouldn’t fit in the printer tray!!! So I went to page setup and turned the envelope template vertically then inserted a textbox, wrote the address, then turned the textbox vertically (this is in the textbox menu… so I printed the envelope vertically (like I did the invitations) and it worked out great! Just figured I’d share this if you want to try to print right on the envelopes again…. but I love the labels!!:)

it’s unfortunate that the envelope gets stuck in your printer, but the labels are a good Plan B and i love that font! but how about printing them on pretty pre-cut labels? cut in a more decorative shape, or possibly with a decorative border already printed on them? OR, if you don’t want to do that, instead of using a paper cutter how about using a shape punch out from the craft store? you can even get pretty big ones online that will cut a rectangle with a scalloped edge or something like that. if you have to use labels I recommend these 2 options because plain rectangular labels just read too “office max” you know?
