Mrs. Glasses's Picture
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
About Mrs. Glasses

Now that our backyard wedding is done and dusted I can look back and wonder, would I do it again? Absolutely! Here are some thoughts that I hope will help you if you are considering a backyard wedding.

Pros and Cons of a Backyard Wedding : wedding los angeles reception A30127

Pros and Cons of a Backyard Wedding : wedding los angeles reception A3012701

Pros

  • Complete control of your wedding. No in-house caterers, restrictions on sparklers/bubbles/bird seed, etc.
  • Can be cheaper.
  • Everything in one location. You don’t have to worry about forgetting something vital.
  • Venue at your fingertips to set things up way before your wedding day.
  • Intimate, cozy, charming feeling if that’s what you’re going for!
  • No site fee means more money for the fun stuff.
  • Can be planned relatively quickly. We planned ours in 5 months due to Mr. G’s visa situation.

Cons

  • Can be startlingly expensive, mostly due to the cost of rentals.
  • Can become extremely stressful. Unless an event organizer is hired everything needs to be set up and cleaned up by family and friends.
  • Lack of space depending on the size of the yard.
  • Must consider liability insurance. We didn’t have any, thank goodness no one got hurt!
  • I get the feeling some folks didn’t take our wedding seriously.
  • The neighbors might be disturbed. Ours were cool, though.
  • Weather worries, although I’m sure this is true for all outdoor venues

And now, bravely, I present to you our backyard budget wedding breakdown. I know these posts have always been helpful for me so I wanted to do one although this is actually quite scary now. We dealt with very few vendors so we never had official pricing on much—to sit down and itemize everything is not fun! Here is how everything broke down, from the tippy top to the very end.

Dress/corset/petticoat/alterations/cleaning/preservation from David’s Bridal: $900

Decor from Michaels, Jo-Ann’s, Home Depot, and Daiso:$100

Wedding bands from Bridal Rings Company: $700

Mr. G’s suit from Macy’s: $200

Music from iPod, speakers: Free!

Favors from local Japanese supermarket: $50

Dessert from Food4Less: $50 (Ugh, I ran out of time to bake everything and had to go to the grocery store the day before the wedding!)

Officiant: Free! Mr. G’s brother was not ordained as we were already married anyway.

Paper products including STDs, invites, postage, place cards, programs, etc.: $350

Flowers purchased from wholesale florist: $230

Drinks purchased from BevMo!: $180

Food catered from a British restaurant: $2,700

Videographer: Free! (wedding present from a friend)

Table linens from Anna’s Linens: $76

Fauxtobooth: Almost free! (Bee lovin’)

Photography: $500 (heavily discounted from a friendor)

Rentals from party rental company: $481

Rehearsal dinner at Souplantation: $150

Backyard garden and lawn servicing: $400

40 guests total

Approx. $7,000

Overall, I think we did really well, except for the food which we were willing to go high on because it was something special. We definitely came within budget and I’m happy with the result for the money we put in. I know I’m not the most relatable bee because our wedding was the result of some crazy circumstances, a completely unique location, and practically no vendors, but I do hope I’ve been able to shine a light on a new way to have a wedding.

Here are some other shining resources for a backyard weddings that I’ve personally enjoyed: Young House Love, A Backyard Wedding, how to have a 5K backyard wedding from Project Wedding, a vintage wedding from Green Wedding Shoes, and an intimate Bohemian wedding from Ruffled.

What are the pros and cons of your venue?

I’ve loved reading your posts about having a backyard wedding. If we had the space, this is totally what we would have done.

Wow, your budget and spending are almost exactly what ours were! We used a venue that felt backyard-y but was still a venue, and added another $650 total, but other than that - our costs were almost identical! Thanks for the reassuring number-sharing :)

It really is amazing how much everything costs (the caterer was what surprised me the most, and ended up also being $2700 for 40 people). It looks like it was all GORGEOUS.

Great job with the budget!! It’s definitely very useful and interesting to see that it is possible to spend a decent but not exaggerated amount of money on a wedding, I’m taking notes :-)

OU I love this! I REALLY REALLY wanted a backyard wedding and it’s really interesting to read your pro/con list and breakdown. You two did AMAZING! You’re probably going to fall over when you see my breakdown (not at all looking forward to that post)! I think $7k is really good. As we estimated the cost for a backyard wedding for us, we thought we’d spend double that, so BRAVO!!!

relatable? I think everyone secretly wants to have a backyard wedding (I know I did) but due to my wedding vision, space, money, and the work involved, often times thats just not possible!

I’m having a home wedding - backyard if it’s not pouring! Fingers crossed. So I most definitely relate! We’ll be spending a few thousand more than you did, because neither my mom (whose house it is) nor I can deal with the time and stress of much DIY. Our budget is around $11,000 for 75 people.

Wonderful post, Glasses! I really think that most people don’t realize how much extra work it is to plan a backyard wedding. When I shared our “venue,” people always seemed to act like it was so simple, convenient, and cheap. Definitely anything but. But as your wedding shows, if you’re willing to put in the extra work, the personal, sentimental nature of the day makes it all worth it!

I think this is one of the most helpful posts in the history of weddingbee! And there are way more brides having similar types of weddings than is represented on weddingbee and other wedding blogs - so thank you so much!
The pros, cons, and the budget breakdown is just awesome. Thank you!
and a ps - everything looks so beautiful so far - I`m seriously impressed you did it for 7k - way to go!

I’m doing a church ceremony and backyard reception with a very similar budget. I was just wondering, what did you use for speakers? I was thinking we’d have to rent some in order to get the music able to be heard (we’re looking at anywhere between 60 and 85 guests.)

@Lulu: The speakers we used were our super old computer speakers! We didn’t want to piss off the neighbors by getting a super blasting sound system. We definitely considered renting speakers. To be honest, they worked well for the ceremony and for the people directly near the speakers, but I’m sure the people across the yard couldn’t hear the cocktail hour and dinner music!

What a wonderful post!! My fiance and I just decided on a backyard wedding as his parents back yard is BEAUTIFUL! I do have one question, if you choose to do the wedding and the reception in the yard, what do the guests do while you transition from wedding to reception? I would hate to see them just standing around while we transitioned. Thanks!
