Mrs. Jam, Chicago Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Associate Wedding Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Structural Engineer Engagement Date: December 23, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Hunter’s Ridge, Princeton, IL About Me: I’m a penny-pinching cat lady getting ready to marry the frugal dog lover of my dreams. Our ideal Saturday morning includes rummaging around people’s junk at garage and estate sales followed by an afternoon date to our favorite café, where we only eat sandwiches that include the word “salad.” We actually love it so much, it’s sort of our unofficial wedding theme: Look at our delicious finds, eat homemade ham salad, and celebrate our love…barndance style. When we’re not obsessing over our love-fest shindig, we’re planning themed parties for our best friends and jamming to '90s music.
About Mrs. Jam

The Picky Eaters’ Persuasion

January 10th, 2011 @ 2:37 pm by Mrs. Jam

After months of imagining our wedding food as homemade egg, ham and turkey salad sandwiches, we’ve decided to actually listen to the people who will be eating it (aside from us, because we are blinded by an intense feeling of nirvana when even thinking of such a spread):

“But I hate sandwiches that include the word ’salad!’” the people screamed, leaving us thoroughly confused as to how on Earth people could feel such intense hate for something we deem the most delicious food of them all.

“Well our wedding is going to be really casual, and it’s the perfect food for a sweet little get-together. Plus it’s our favorite–yum!”

“Ugh, fine. Then I will just go hungry and drink a lot and end up getting drunk because I refuse to eat a sandwich like that for dinner,” they responded, which I always ignored in favor of our chosen food vision. Plus, my friends are all outspoken divas and I’m immune to it.

The Picky Eaters' Persuasion : wedding chicago food 2010 04 Photo source, which looks delicious even though it’s more gourmet than I typically like my egg salad.

But after hearing the same responses from far too many people, we threw the idea out the window and settled on having our beloved salad sandwiches at the no-frills wedding shower. From that point on, we had one seemingly attainable goal: Find a country caterer for about $10 per person.

Does it sound impossibly cheap? Are you laughing straight into your computer screens at our naive, inexpensive catering dreams? With a $10k budget and lots of other things to spend the wedding money on, we simply didn’t have room to go any higher.

And after dealing with caterers who hung up the phone mid-call (perhaps by accident, but I can’t be sure); catering info packets mysteriously getting lost in the mail not once but three times (yes, recommended caterer in the Illinois Valley…I’m talking to you); and companies trying to charge an extra $200 to drive 15 minutes away, we found a hands-down champion and are still relishing in our money-saving glory:

Introducing Hy-Vee…also known as grocery store catering. Also known as absolutely delicious food for $8.99 per person with all kiddies eating free. And considering we’re inviting about 30 little ones, this is so huge we can barely stand it!

The Picky Eaters' Persuasion : wedding chicago food 076 The half-cut-off and always-hungry Mr. Jam getting ready to demolish testing plate numero uno. The pasta salad and fried chicken were total hits.

Mr. Jam and I went for a whatever-we-wanted-to-try tasting with my mom, because she’s absolutely fabulous and is also a little bit picky about food. Plus, all of her friends have raved about Hy-Vee catering, and she has been pretty curious about the hype.

As it turns out, the hype was completely deserved because we joyously fist-pumped and celebrated after everything we tried!

Our (sort of official but not set in stone) menu:

  • Fried chicken, which happens to be a local favorite and one of Mr. Jam’s ultimate meals
  • BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, which we can only describe using one word: LOVE
  • Rainbow rotini pasta salad, which was the all-around favorite and chock-full of vegetables, olives, cheese and other tasty surprises
  • Potato salad, which we all loved even though we’re particular when it comes to potato salad
  • Macaroni and cheese, which will feed all of the kiddies and the masses of grown-ups, too

This will also include dinner rolls, and oh, can I please mention again that this is just $8.99 per person and children are free? Yes, the minds are still blown.

And, and, and….for the ultimate cherry on our cheapy-cheap catering find: ALL OF THE LEFTOVER FOOD IS PACKAGED UP AND IS OURS TO TAKE HOME. ALL OF IT.

As a couple who oftentimes argues over who gets to eat the leftovers, this was a definite cause for high-fives and celebratory contract-signing. Our guests will officially have food to eat! And they will like it! And we can gnaw on a wedding drumstick the next day! Hallelujah!

How are you guys doing in your caterer-hunts? Did you have to change the menu because your sassy guests were hating on it? Are you going the grocery store caterer route, too? Did you gorge at your tasting and love every second of it? Spill your guts!

Score! That is awesome. I have to say, I’m with the rest of your guests - if the only options was one of those “salad” sandwiches, I would be eating a lot of potato chips and not much else!

Ah, i’d say that’s definitely a menu upgrade! (I’m in the “ewww sandwiches with “salad” in the name” group ;-) )

That’s awesome! And a definite upgrade - the idea of a ham salad sandwich is a little scary to me.

I would totally eat sandwiches at your wedding. I love ____ salad sandwiches! The pulled pork sandwiches sound amazing, though…

Thank you so much for this post! I chocked at the initial sticker shock when it came to food. We have 10,000 to spend on the ENTIRE wedding and the first catering quote came to 8,500. Then I found a local caterer that would do appetizers, sides and fajita stations for $12/pp. And I was thrilled! Well, up until a few days ago when a coworker casually noted that wedding food should be at least $60/pp. I was beginning to feel down about my food steal until your post picked me up! It’s nice to know that other brides are looking for a delicious deal. Thank you, Miss Jam.

We had the same problem and finally convinced a caterer that we didn’t want or need steak for our reception. We really wanted a down home meal. So we are going with Fried Chicken as well…really doesn’t get much better than that!

I would LOVE to eat nothing but salad sandwiches, alas, not everyone is as in touch with their amazingness!

Sounds good, and a definite upgrade in my book! I also hate any mayonaise-based “salad” so I would’ve been in the drinking group!

Great call. I know it can stink getting rid of something unique and personal, but in this case I think your guests will really appreciate it. I love chicken salad now, but 5 years ago I wouldn’t have touched it. I think it’s one of those love-it-or-hate-it foods.

The Hy-Vee near us offers a discount if you use them for catering, cake and flowers.

Very cool, hard to beat a good sandwich. Had them at a wedding once, everybody enjoyed them.

Wow, that is an awesome price! And really, you are getting tons of options for people to enjoy.

I too am in the no salad sandwiches camp. The consistency has actually caused me to throw-up. Not an attractive time for me. That being said, I would never complain to a bride about it. I would have just eaten before the wedding.

It’s great to see that people are thinking out of the box for caterers. I have yet to have good food at a wedding and I know they all cost at least 75 a plate. That is not cool when clearly good food is available for far less.

I think its incredibly rude that your guests complained about the food. We’re doing a Sunday afternoon tea/cocktail reception with fruit, cheese, veggies and sandwiches. That’s what we can afford and that’s what we’re doing. It’s the host’s decision. That being said, I’m glad you found a compromise!

I am totally 100% in the pro-salad-sandwich category….but maybe it’s because I have an unhealthy obsession with egg salad :) And that picture just made me huuungry! Oh also, $8.95?? That is freakin amazing! Great find and the menu looks delicious! Mmm mac and cheese….

I am one of your sassy guest (with the exception of getting very drunk) because I don’t like salad sandwiches either. You got a great deal on your food and it looks very tasty. Our venue doesn’t allow outside catering so we were stuck with their food anyway. … Good job!

I have to admit that I am not a ____ salad sandwich fan either :( I think if you had at least 1 alternate it would have been ok. But I am happy to hear that you found an affordable catering option you love! We ran into the same sticker shock when we got back some catering quotes and decided that $15/per person BBQ was perfect for us and within our budget.

I adore a well-made chicken salad (though egg salad gives me the willies), but I have to say that fried chicken beats it out times a million. YUM!!!!

I think this is an upgrade from the sandwiches. That quantity of egg salad would have made for one very stinky reception! :-)

Your alternate looks like a fun plate of food. To be honest, it looks in the $8-$10 price range, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Can the grocery store provide a nice salad or fresh vegetable side as well? I think that would really complete the meal and make it a bit more balanced.

That is a steal for $8.99 a person. So glad you two found a yummy country style menu for the price. :)
