Miss Oatmeal, Fresno, CA Age and Occupation: 25, Medical Device Sales Representative Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Police Officer/Captain in the US Army Engagement Date: February 16, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Private Residence, Fresno About Me: I am a toast-loving, list-making, occasionally crazy California girl getting dangerously close to marrying her crime-fighting, patient, man's man fiancé. I’ve never left our hometown of Clovis, CA, I love Anthropologie so much it almost hurts, appreciate promptness, love that our 4lb. Chihuahua, Murphy, smells like Fritos, am irritated by windshield wipers that move too fast for the amount of rain, love me some cold weather, have an unhealthy obsession with boots, and wholeheartedly think that my family is everything. Mr. Oatmeal is, oddly enough, my brother's best friend. He's also the best thing that's ever happened to me, and together we are planning a vintage chic, backyard, spring wedding with a few nontraditional touches while trying to keep up with our crazy lives.
About Miss Oatmeal

A Private Affair

January 11th, 2011 @ 3:04 pm by Miss Oatmeal

Hello there, hive!

I’ve answered the who and what of our wedding, but I have yet to address the where. And here is where I run into a wee problem. I don’t feel like sharing this bit of information. I’m not trying to be snobby about it at all. I just feel like our venue is unique in comparison to the traditional venues in the Fresno area, and I’d rather that detail be saved for our guests to enjoy the day of. I’m not under any impression that we’re the only couple getting married here because that’s most definitely not the case. I just don’t want to share. That’s all there is to it. :) With that said, I will describe it as best as I can (and just maybe give you a small sneak preview of it).

So…our big day will be celebrated at a lovely private residence. Yes, we are having a backyard wedding! When we went for our initial tour, I thought about it for about one hot second before deciding that it had to be it. I knew the moment I saw it that this was going to be where we said our wedding vows. It has a unique charm, complete with tons of overgrown trees, fountains!, and the most gorgeous flowers I’ve ever seen. Luckily for our wedding budget, the gorgeous ambiance of the backyard will allow us to somewhat skimp on our flowers. Don’t get me wrong, we’re still getting flowers. I love flowers, but they’re not high on my priority list. Here’s a picture I found early on in the planning process that has remained my inspiration. (You may recognize this from a previous post.)

This is the the look I hope to accomplish on our big day. I’m not all that concerned with the types of flowers; hell, I don’t even care what color they are. Do you know what I mean, or do you think I’m crazy?

Here are some more fabulous details about this fabulous place:

  • The backyard is actually split up into two separate areas, allowing us to have our ceremony in one part, while the second part is already set up for the reception. No down time! Yay!
  • There are a few super secret nooks (they really aren’t that secret at all) so we can steal away during the reception to get a few minutes to ourselves.
  • There is no middle aisle. You may think this is odd because I sure did. But after thinking about it, it’s actually going to work out really well. There are two aisles (one on either side of the ceremony), one for the guys to walk down, and one for the gals.
  • Big downer: we have no backup plan if the weather is less than favorable. So we’re accepting prayers and happy thoughts for picture-perfect May weather!

That’s all for now. But because I love you, I’ll give you a sneak peak!

{Here, I’m standing in the entry of the reception area, looking into the ceremony spot! Both personal photos.}

What do you think? I know I haven’t given you much to work with, but trust me when I say it’s an incredible venue. Did you get that feeling when you first saw your wedding venue? And what are your thoughts on an outdoor wedding with zero backup plans? Yikes! (I think I say “Yikes!” too much.)

We’re also an outdoor wedding. We have a back-up, but it’s so far from what we have our hearts set on, so almost no back-up. You, my dear, are a brave girl!

Brave girl! We’re an outdoor wedding too with a not acceptable Plan B. Our hearts are set on a garden, weather be damned.

Yay! Your venue sounds dreamy. My parent’s backyard did not have two separate spaces for a reception and ceremony, so we had to keep it all in one area and it really shows in the pictures. Would’ve loved to have two clear spaces for that. Also, my parents backyard had no little nooks and crannies so when we took family portraits it was all out in the open, no alone time. We had no Plan B in case of rain, and it looked like the rain gods were gonna splat all over our wedding but it worked out in the end. It did so for Mrs. Earrings too. The hive is good juju, you will have nothing to worry about :)

Had we lived in CA instead of MI, I totally would have taken the risk for an outdoor wedding (especially if I had that gut feeling about a venue). Fingers crossed for beautiful weather on your big day!

First, I love the venue. It’s perfect for the backyard feel. I got married at my family farm and fell in love with the DIY, thrown together, feel of having a backyard wedding. They are fun while still feeling romantic and special. Secondly, I think it’s totally fine to not care or have any idea about what you want for flowers. I think wildflowers are beautiful for a garden wedding! You’ll figure it all out, I’m sure! And lastly, I’ll be sending good sunny vibes your way in May!

I can respect that you want to keep it private. It looks really nice though. And it’s pretty rare for rain in May in Fresno so I think you’ll be pretty safe without a backup plan.

Hey….
Didn’tsee a contact button on the sight so I am just going to write you a little letter right here in the comments. First, I am a tad envious of your beautiful venue, we are getting married in the backyard of a Private Home, in September in FRESNO!!!! RIGHT!? We should be wedding buddies. I too am looking at a quirky, vintagey fresno-centric wedding. I am finishing my Masters in Mississippi so a lot planning is from afar. Also we have no rain back up plan either. We should think og combining resources…am I seeming stalkery? sorry just excited to find a Fresno Wedding Bee. So if you’d like an equally wedding mad friend also planning for the fresno area you should go on and shout back!

Your venue sounds wonderful! I couldn’t help though but let out a small “gasp” when you mentioned there is no plan B for the weather, but then again I don’t live in California so I can’t afford to be without a plan B (had to give up a couple of amazing venues because of that unfortunately)
