Mrs. Waffle's Picture
Mrs. Waffle, Austin Age and Occupation: 31, Costumer/Artist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Animator Engagement Date: July 27, 2010 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Hummingbird House About Me: My life is pretty much spent in a sea of fabric, paint, sequins and drama. When I’m not working, I play on a trivia team, take Broadway dance classes, read, buy shoes, and occasionally geek out on video games. I am an American girl who loves all things British and Mr. Waffle is a Brit who loves all things American...I guess it was meant to be!
About Mrs. Waffle

There are a few reasons we had to get a move on with this whole registry deal.

  1. MOH Sweet Pea is hosting the shower and is having a baby in April.
  2. Because of #1, we are having our shower in February. Sweet Pea is a teeny-tiny lady and already the baby belly is HUGE. I will be shocked if she can even walk in March. (You know I love you SP.)
  3. Waffle leaves for LA this weekend :( so this was our last opportunity to do it together.

We hit up 3 stores on our whirlwind registry tour: Crate & Barrel, Best Buy, and Bed, Bath & Beyond. We didn’t really “register” for anything at Best Buy, it was just a good excuse for Waffle to have a break from linens and flatware.

I was super excited when we started our day.

So, We Registered…and I Thank God It’s Over : wedding austin registry 110 1

Aw, here I am all wide eyed and excited.

I was hoping Waffle would finally get into the spirit of the registry to by getting to zap everything with the scanner. Waffle loves gadgets! How could he not like the scanner? This was going to be a day of fun, new bedding, grown up dishes and furniture!

It was not like this at all, hive. It was not a day of fun and shenanigans. It was more like this…

So, We Registered…and I Thank God It’s Over : wedding austin registry 22 2

Sorry, but sometimes when words fail me, drawing a picture helps.

Registering, for us, was exhausting. We had trouble agreeing on a lot of items. This led to me having a mini-emotional, inner monologue…“is it a bad sign that we can’t agree on a set of dishes that embodies the essence of us and does that mean we’re doomed?” This made me lose focus, and when I would finally snap out of it he was checking his email. This, coupled with lack of sustenance, led to us both being big time cranky pants.

Also, Waffle was not interested in using the gun AT ALL. Seriously. The only time in the day he used it was on the one item he was excited about…the Roomba. I documented this moment because I couldn’t believe it was happening.

So, We Registered…and I Thank God It’s Over : wedding austin registry 32 3

Looking back, I think there were a few things that could have made this day a lot less stressful and frustrating. I’m going to share them with you in hopes that it’ll help those who have yet to register.

  1. Pack snacks in your bag, ’cause it’s a long day folks! At one point, Waffle was moaning like a child about how he wanted a snack and a drink and I know I needed one at a certain point, too.
  2. Do some research! Check out the websites of the stores you’re planning to hit up and get a preliminary idea of what you’re interested in, and then…
  3. Make a list before you go! Seriously, make a list! If I had made a list of things I was interested in it would have saved us circling Crate & Barrel 20 times.
  4. Have patience with your mister. He most likely doesn’t understand why a flatware set needs a “baby fork” and hasn’t the foggiest idea what “thread count” means. He may, like Waffle did, voice these concerns and make you crazy about them because he doesn’t understand why it’s important to you. He may ask you why you can’t opt out of having said “baby fork” and “baby spoon” in your flatware package. All I can say is, “Keep calm and carry on.” Breathe and smile.
  5. If you are finding #4 challenging, take a break and dig in to those snacks you packed in your bag.
  6. Do it in your PJs. I have several friends that never even left their couches to register. If I didn’t have the burning need to touch everything I want to buy, then I would have gone for this option. Alas, I am a crazy, touchy-feely type and had to forgo the internet only option.

Do you have any registering tips to add to the list?

Awww I’m sorry that the process was stressful for you guys! I thought the scan gun always worked to excite the groom.

We registered on Saturday at C&B and BBB. I did a ton of research beforehand, and came prepared with the ‘where’ we were getting the ‘what’. To be sure we didn’t miss anything, we skimmed dishes and silverware at BBB even though we registered for them at C&B, and we limited the registering to the preliminary stuff that are must have items. This kept the decisions to a minimum and we will revise online and add things after we buy a house or as the wedding approached.

I know we are the exception, but registering was easy. It was a long day and we pretty much simultaneously said ‘my feet hurt, let’s be done’… and we were.

Haha, our registering experience was almost exactly the same - such a nightmare! It was fun for about 20 minutes. Then it was 8 straight hours, our feet were killing us, we were starving, the scan gun broke, and it ended in tears. Glad we only have to do that once :)

C&B does registry events at certain times of the year - they serve breakfast snacks and mimosas and since the store isn’t open yet to the general public, you have the full attention of the sales folks. They showed off an electric grill by cooking us bacon (that was a win w/ the FI) and we got to try slicing things with the knives (a win w/ me). Overall, I think it was a much better experience than trying to wade through the crowds, so I’d recommend checking it out.

Oh man, I’m sorry your experience was less than fun. But I’m definitely going to use some of your suggestions when we go out…so thank you!

One of my friends made the following suggestion: divide it up over a few trips, so you aren’t out for 8 hours looking at all these things and having them blur together. Do flatware and china one day, bedding another day, home decor another, etc, etc, etc… AND make a list and get an idea of what you like online ahead of time…

…or be like one of my besties and ask one of your attendants and your mom to do it for you… ha ha. (No, I’m not kidding. She has/did.)

Registring is not fun….we were ill prepared as to what we wanted or needed. Instead we were both cranky pants because we would rather be doing something else. :) The second time around was better….let’s see about the third time. lol.

I’ve already checked out a numbr of registry checklists and edited them down to items we actually need/are interested in so we have a place to start. We’ve discussed some of our preferences (like no colored dishes per the FI) but I’m sure there will be some surprises.

@Sking we just signed up for the C&B registry event and I am so excited it seems like a great way to start the process!!

I’m sorry to hear you had such a rough time! Stories like yours make me glad that my fiance and I did 99% of our shopping online. It would be nice to get the experience of going out with the scan gun, I think, but not for a full day…unless there are mimosas and bacon involved. :P

My FI and I registered at C&B and BB&B this past week. It was an exhausting experience, but it helped that we had sat down with a checklist (from Real Simple) and added other things as we came up with them. We’ve also made a ton of adjustments since; I just don’t feel comfortable anymore buying anything without checking reviews online! If reviews don’t come up on the BB&B website, search for the same item on Amazon to see what people say.

I was thinking of going in and doing all of the paperwork one day and then going back with the Mr at a later date… I’m sure sitting there listening to the shpeel they have to go through would get us off on the wrong foot…

We went to BB&B, but only registered for certain things in person - I did the rest from home later. The other thing was that we set it up with a registry person and had to listen to an hour spiel about fine china, which was exhausting. That girl was so persistent, I finally had to ask for the gun and tell her we were going off on our own now. I also let her scan a bunch of stuff to shut her up, and I deleted most of it later. So I wouldn’t recommend letting yourself get roped into that, unless you really care about china.

Haha, very good suggestions. I’d add: go to the toilet beforehand, and no drinks. I had to pee like 50 times in Target and we’d be all the way in the back of the store doing the potty dance and Mr. G would be like “I’ll take control of the damn gun. Go to the bathroom!” But I quite enjoyed registering. Mr. G did not.

More tips: Go to the store during off-peak hours. It helps in so many ways.

I agree about research! Consumer Reports and online store product reviews were wonderful. It took some time but well with it!

I will be registering next week. One day will be on a wednesday at 2pm, and the other day will be a saturday. We will register at crate and barrel and macys on the same day, and target the other day. What day and times does everyone think is best to register?

I will tell you that the Roomba is amazing especially if you have fluffy friends that live with you :D

We registered last Saturday and Sunday. #4 was mainly me not knowing about things and his having to explain things to me :)
