Sloth Seeks Fashion Advice

January 11th, 2011 @ 11:22 am by Ms. Sloth

I’m so good at giving fashion advice to others but I can’t dress myself to save my life. Mr. S is hopeless at giving advice, so where better to turn than the hive?

And so, I need your help! This weekend, I’m going to a wedding at a very trendy art space/event venue/bar in Brooklyn, and I’ve got my outfit almost put together, but not quite. I didn’t buy anything new for the wedding; I’m just going to wear items that I already own.

I’m going to wear this sparkly dress from Urban Outfitters:

And my trusty old Steve Madden Mary Janes:

Black tights (too boring to photograph) and this sparkly headband:

But here’s where I need help. I need to wear something over this dress. First of all, it’s January in Brooklyn so it’s going to be fuh-REEZING. And secondly, as I’ve said before, I hate my arms.

I have a black cardigan and a velvet blazer. I know that these photos aren’t the best quality (thank you, crappy point-and-shoot), but I want to know what you think.

Here are some better photos, via J. Crew, where I bought both items:

The velvet blazer is dressier and probably more appropriate for a wedding, but it’s also heavier and stiffer. I’m worried that I’ll get hot and that I’ll want to take it off, but, again—ARMS. The cardigan is more comfy but it’s less special as I wear it at least once a week to work. It’s a nice cardigan, but it’s just a cardigan.

So, weigh in. Should I wear the blazer or the cardigan, and why?

I think you should find a sweater that is a smaller proportion to the dress. In the pics, the black sweater/blazer are overpowering the look. Find a sweater or shrug that hits higher - a “shrunken” sweater. UO and J Crew both typically carry that silhouette (I think I got mine at J Crew)

What if you wear the blazer by bring the cardigan in your purse in case it gets warm at the reception?

I would vote for the cardigan! :)

I like the structure of the blazer better for sure, I don’t think the shape of the cardigan does much for your waistline with the dress underneath. Personally, I’m always cold - so the temperature thing is up to you.

@crayfish: Unfortunately, I don’t have the time or money to buy something new before this weekend, which is why I’m stuck with one of these two options.

the dress isn’t very structured, but the blazer is. The cardigan gives the overall outfit a very floaty feel.

I voted for the cardigan because you will be SO MUCH more comfortable at the wedding. It would be a snap to hike up the sleeves & cool off, whereas the velvet blazer would be stifling!

I’m likin’ the cardigan. I am partial to cardigans in general because they’re part of my “uniform”, but I think I like this one because it’s a bit shorter. Maybe go with @crayfish ’s suggestion and find a shorter shrug? Cute outfit choice!

I voted cardigan. It seems more feminine and I like the overall look more than the structured blazer.

The blazer for sure! The structure is better and it’s dressier–the cardigan looks sloppy. And the blazer gives you better shape, your hips look smaller. The cardigan hits too high and acentuates your hips. Plus–if you choose to button the blazer it might provide a nice hour glass shape, the cardigan doesn’t have the support and wouldn’t give the same effect.

i agree with oatmeal. the blazer is the wrong proportion since the dress isn’t too fitted. the cardigan looks great and you will be more comfortable!

I voted for the blazer because I like the structure of the jacket against the femininity of the dress, which by the way is SO cute! The blazer gives you just a touch of edge, which I totally associate with Miss Sloth in my head!

I like both but agree that you need a smaller silhouette. What if you do the JCrew thing and put a skinny silver belt over either item? Love the shoes and the dress! So cute. Good job finding things in the closet.

The blazer reads more “formal” to me - plus blazers with turned up sleeves are kind of a ‘thing’ in NY right now. The structure of the blazer is better and it dresses up the overall outfit nicely. That being said, you need to belt it with that dress, otherwise you’re losing the narrowness at your waist that would give you a much nicer silhouette.

I think with this type of dress the cardigan fits a bit more slimly with a fitted waist. I have that same blazer and I know that when its buttoned, it has a nice fitted quality, but that wouldn’t look right with that dress obviously. I think the blazer is better for dressing up jeans of slacks but for a cute dress like that the cardigan is perfect!

I say go for the cardigan! It looks “softer”

I definately voted for the cardigan. It dosen’t help that they are my favorite article of clothing to wear and I have a ridiculas amount of them in my closet. I just think it seems to flow better.

On another note, HOLY SMOKES Sloth you weren’t kidding about WW working for you! You look amazing!!!

I like both options on you (which I am sure is so helpful in your making a choice, right?). I second the motion above to do the blazer and bring the sweater in your purse in case it gets hot.

I just wanted to comment that you are *rocking* that dress and it looks great on you!

For that particular outfit, the cardigan looks the best! :) The blazer w. that dress and the entire look just looks more ‘bulky/boxy’.

(I liked what Miss Oatmeal said too)

Enjoy! :)

You can easily dress up the cardigan, try a brooch or two to adorn it with and button up the bottom three buttons, scrunch it up towards your natural waist a bit more to add a more pleasing line, and extenuate the waist line of the dress itself.
Let me know what you think and good luck! Great pumps!
