Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Making Butterfly Escort Cards

January 12th, 2011 @ 2:36 pm by Mrs. Brooch

Thank goodness for friends, right?  The closer we get to the wedding, the more I thank my lucky stars for great friends. There’s no way I could do all of this wedding stuff without them—especially this project. I couldn’t do it without the help of Mrs. Pretzel (hey, lady!) and her Silhouette cutting machine. Check out these butterfly escort cards she made:

I freaking love them!! And I never imagined we’d have something so perfect for our escort card display!! I know I spoke once about a clean and simple display, but it’s really always been my desire to do something over-the-top, unique, and fitting to our garden theme. You may not remember, but I blogged about this next picture in this post a while back.

Well, I put off the project for a while and considered doing other things, but eventually came back around to it. I knew it was what we wanted, but I was concerned about the structure. How would we hold up this string of ribbons and butterflies? Maybe like this:

Well, they have sand, so that’s not really fair! Whatever we would use would have to be transferable to the indoors, too, in case of rain. Hmmm.

You’ll never guess where I got answer! The hive, of course! I posted a thread on the boards and Kitzy suggested making a chuppah! What an excellent idea! I would have NEVER thought of that, but it’s perfect. I emailed my planner and she had been thinking the same thing!  Then it was just a matter of gathering the ribbon, and making the actual butterfly escort cards.

Cue Mrs. Pretzel!

I knew the butterfly cards was too big of a project for me. I don’t have a great cutting machine and I’ve never been good with cutting by hand! I turned to the bees for help, and Mrs. Pretzel has come to my rescue! Look at these awesome butterfly silhouettes she created as a mock up for me!

Now, the hard part!

Which kind of butterflies should we use? Which font? Where should the guests’ names be printed? In the center? On the wing?

What’s your favorite? I have to say that I absolutely love the first butterfly in the first two pictures. My favorite fonts are the fancy ones, too!

Mrs. Pretzel is really saving me by taking on this project! I’m so glad I asked for help and that she’s willing to get involved! I don’t know what I’d do without my bee friends, man! They’re the greatest. :)

Which butterfly do you think will work best?

Are your friends helping you with any big projects?

Brooch, it depends on the look or how formal you’re going for. I like the one on the left in the second picture with the printing on the wing. But if you like the fancy font, and the fancier butterfly go for the left in the first picture. But seriously, the hive has such great resources. I hope when I need help like this, I’ll find it here!

Those are amazing, but how on earth do you print on something after you’ve cut it on the Cricut? Do you print it and then cut it out? If so, then how do you know exactly where to place the text?

I’m somewhat tech savvy, but this just boggles my mind!

I like 1,2, and 3 best! I love butterflies!! I would think you could def do a mix of these 3….I also prefer the centered text. Way to get help from another bee!

I like all the butterfly designs so use a mix of the different designs. I also like the lettering in the middle of the butterfly.

I like them printed in the center of the butterfly, and the simpler (second) font since if there are a mass of them fluttering about, it might be hard to find your name in that scripty font!

I would do all of them…and have various gorgeous butterflies flying around :)

I’m with @Baileyh - an assortment would look awesome! And I like centre print.

@kaytieluv: You’re right- getting it printed on the Cricut would be torture- I actually own a Silhouette Machine not a Cricut- the Silhouette software allows you to align your text on the cut item, send it to your printer and then put the printed paper through the machine to cut. It has an optical eye that reads registration marks on the paper so it lines it up perfectly.

Personally, I like them on the wing, but I would certainly love the variety too! They would be unique and awesome!

I like the shape of the butterfly in the first picture with the font of the very last picture. They are all great though! Can’t wait to see how it all comes together with the chuppah!

@Mrs. Pretzel: Your cards, with the butterfly shape and yellow color, seemed to be out of a Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s book, don’t know if you know it of if really have to do with “one hundred years of solitude” or not, but will really matched that themed!:)
BTW I know this cuz the author is from my country and in his 80th birthday we have to decorate my school with yellow butterflies;)

I like the one in the top left-hand corner in the first pic as far as shape and name placement.

I think a mix of all of them would be pretty. I think I like the centered writing best. Pretzel is amazing!

I like the second pic - first one and name in the center. A mix would be more whimsical.
