The Ever-Fabulous OOT Bags

January 12th, 2011 @ 3:54 pm by Miss Oatmeal

When planning a wedding on a budget, there are certain things that are just not a possibility. Like videography, for us, is just not in the cards. It’s actually taken me awhile to let go of that because I see something like this, cry at how beautiful it is, cry because I can’t have it, and then just go on being pretty upset about the whole thing. Then I realize that we’re going to have incredible photographs that will be with us forever, and I am able to let go a little bit. Nonetheless, I’m still a bit saddened by the thought.

But that is actually not what this post was supposed to be about. I started off with the topic of budget constraints, and I’ll try to stay off videos for a while. We will be having a considerable amount of out-of-town guests celebrating with us on our big day. The thought of our guests arriving at their hotel and being welcomed with a sweet little bag full of goodies just makes me smile.

And then the reality of our wedding budget sets in. While we don’t have the $28 per out-of-town guest + the cost of filling the bags (the look on their faces if they were given an empty bag kinda makes me laugh), I would still like to do a little something. There is so much information on this topic out there. There is, of course, the Weddingbee Wiki, and while it IS quite helpful, Fresno is most definitely not on that list. Maybe I could enlist the help of I Heart Fresno to find some unique-to-Fresno (and inexpensive) gifts to fill my nonexistent bags.

I’ve given this some thought, and the following (mostly obvious) items will find their way into the bags:

  • A personal thank you note. How lovely would it be to get a personalized thank you from the bride and groom? I have never received one of these (seeing as though I’ve never been given an OOT bag), but I’m convinced that it’s something we have to include.

  • Hydration. I don’t know about you, but I hate not having bottled water with me after a long day of travel. What’s that, you say? There’s usually bottled water in hotel rooms? Oh yeah, but I’d like to save our guests the five-dollar charge per bottle if possible.

  • Something to nibble on. Picture this: adorable, freshly baked, individually wrapped mini-banana-bread loaves for each out-of-town guest. Love it. Love everything about it. I’ll also likely include some bags of trail mix, gum, aspirin, pistachios, fruit, etc. And hint: this idea is 100% stolen from Mrs. Guinea Pig.

  • Lots of information. I love details, lists, and knowing things. I figure there have to be others out there like me who obsess over knowing everything about any given situation. So I’d like to help out our guests with some info about the weekend. Itinerary, map to venue, map to my parents’ house, restaurant and activity suggestions, important contact information, etc.

Am I forgetting anything? The best part about this project is that I can assemble most of these items months before the wedding.

Any suggestions on how to keep this an inexpensive, yet meaningful, project? Did you do out-of-town bags on a budget?

PS: There’s also this video. Oh. My. Goodness. Not only is it beautiful, but they also used a Sigur Ros song. They won me over. Can you tell I still haven’t let go of not having videography? Ugh.

Mr. M’s mom sewed all of our bags and it cost just a couple $$ each and everyone loved them!

Have you thought about doing stenciled letters and paint to make the LOVE one you have pictured? You can order basic bags online for just a couple dollars.

I loved doing the OOT bags, I even sacrificed some other budget items to do them like a crazy person! Oh, and I, too, cry and lament at videography posts. But I think it’s just the music, and maybe I’ll do a ProShow of our wedding pics with a mix of favorite songs. Free and sentimental, just what the wedding doctor ordered!

F9or what it’s worth, you and I are together on the videography thing. I can’t afford it either and yet I’m still dying over it. Mrs. Dolphin’s videos do me in every time. I am sad panda.

i 2nd meerkat’s suggestion - we bought plain canvas totes and are gocco-ing a design on them…there are also print and iron on transfers that are super easy. :) if you need tote vendor recs, let me know!

Yes, yes, and yes! My family is spread out all over the country! We have so many out of town guests and we just could not afford OOT bags at all! But, like you, I hated the thought of our guests not receiving anything upon arrival. My compromise was this: being that we’re getting married near Hershey Pennsylvania, we’re wrapping a couple of Hershey’s chocolate bars in a little ribbon with a note thanking them for making the trip. I do wish it was more, but I hope our guests will appreciate the little treat!

I hope that helps or makes you feel better about your OOT bags.

Thanks for sharing!

Videography may not be in your budget (it wasn’t in ours either) but if it that’s important to you - and it’s obvious that it is - you could either:

1. Set up a couple of tripods and cameras - borrow from friends and family - and shoot the whole thing in one continuous frame. Find a younger cousin or someone who could be trusted to move the cameras from ceremony to reception and press play again. Make several copies of the raw footage and then pay to have it edited at a later time, maybe for your first anniversary.

2. Do what we did - find a film student who charges a minimal fee and exchange it for being used in their portfolio. We hired a guy three days before our wedding, met him for the first time at the rehearsal, and it worked out great. Look at local film schools, undergrad colleges or even Craigslist. Remember that every amazing video you see out there was shot by someone who once did their first wedding. Contracts are a must but it might be worth it for a small budget stretch that satisfies a major craving.

@Miss Lox: Right there with you. I have been known to spend entire afternoons looking at teaser videos on wedding videographer websites & bawl. Mr. Jag thinks I’ve lost my marbles. If only!

My mom made her famous pumpkin chocolate chip muffins for out out of town bags and they were a hit! I made cute little stickers to seal the bags that read “Made with love by the mother of the bride”… I wish we would have gotten some pro pics of those, but oh well! They were delicious!

Thanks for making this post, Oatmeal! We’re in the same boat with the majority of our guests coming from OOT, and I’ve been mulling over how to pull these bags off on a budget (I bookmarked those same L.O.V.E. totes!). Right now the plan is to use kraft bags stamped with our wedding monogram.

Also, one of my BMs baked mini friendship bread loaves as a favor for a baby shower she hosted. She baked them in advance and froze them until the night before, and they still tasted delicious! Not sure if this would work equally well for banana bread, but it might cut down on stuff to do right before the wedding! :)

I was so, so sad that we didn’t have it in our budget to hire a videographer, too.. We were just going to get a family member to record the ceremony at the very least, then literally a month before the wedding, a friend of mine told me that a friend of her does it on the side & only charges $500 for 5 hours & 5 DVDs. Had I not talked to EVERYONE about how sad I was that we couldn’t budget it in, I would have never found him. So talk talk talk to people! You never know who knows somebody who knows somebody. Now, it’s not top of the line quality, but it’s a perfect reminder of how amazing our day was. Good luck!!

Looks like there are quite a few of us @Miss Jaguar: @Miss Lox: who will miss the professional videographers at our wedding. I’ve been working on a post about this. It’s so hard to accept, tho :( @Miss Ostrich: I’d love those recs, please :)

P.S. I love your list. I want to do the exact same things! I didn’t read about Mrs. G’s banana bread but it sounds delish and easy!

I want to do these, but don’t want to add more to the budget. CB mentioned just getting envelopes to put some maps and restaurant recommendations in, but I love the idea of the bags and the water bottles and all that stuff…

Find some good quality kraft paper bags, trim with your colors - for about 75 cents a piece.

Is it Fresno that is famous for raisins?

I love the personalized thank you note! I really wanted to do this, but we ended up not having enough time. We did a mass thank you note instead. I think your guests would love this! :)

Do you not have a single friend or family member that has a video camera? It doesn’t have to be professionally done to be special! Don’t give up because of lack of money. Ask someone to video your special day in lieu of a gift.

I would like to second @kcroxyoursox advice about hiring a student that’s in film school! I had pics taken by a film school student once just bc, and my friends and family thought they were modeling pics! And the shoot was probably 4 hours, 5 outfit changes, and I got a disc with all of the originals. Plus it was only $100!
