Mrs. Prairie Dog, Cincinnati Age and Occupation: 24, Program Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, PhD/Biomedical Engineer Engagement Date: December 18, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Glendale Lyceum About Me: I'm a pilgrim soul of a girl with a house full of books and a coffee addiction that could slay Juan Valdez. My life is a whirl of grammar correction, good music, glue-gunning, and two pets named Hazel and Winston Churchill. I'm marrying my high school boyfriend in a formal-ish spring affair, roughly themed: "Elizabeth Bennet crashes a party co-hosted by Jay Gatsby and Cath Kidston, and loves it."
About Mrs. Prairie Dog

So here they are—the final product. I second-guessed doing save the dates sooo many times throughout this process. BUT, they’re done, and they’re sent.

Things I Did Wrong with Our Save-the-Dates : wedding cincinnati diy save the dates Stdfina STDFINA

Oopsie: I did not order color samples of envelopes like everyone tells you to

I win: Color was perfect and exactly what I wanted

Oopsie: I constantly questioned WHY I was actually doing these. Was it weddingworld pressure?

I win: Mr. PD reminded me that we have a popular wedding weekend and lots of people traveling—the sooner we “officially” notify them, the better! Plus, save the dates are like a dress rehearsal for invitations.

Oopsie: I smacked clear labels on them instead of hand-addressing

I win: Faux-pas, shmo-pas—people are throwing these envelopes away. Maybe if our wedding were formal/black-tie I would have done this, but…it’s not. Homies can get over it.

OH WAIT, no I don’t: Turns out the labels smudge/wipe off at any hint of moisture. Basically, if it rains or snows while they are en-route to mailboxes…they will not GET to mailboxes. Both the address and return address will be ruined. That’s right folks—bridal blogger of the year. “Tacky” and useless labels.

Oopsie: Designed them myself despite having no design software whatsoever, and I’m an insane perfectionist.

I win: I hit a point where I just stopped caring about perfection, and I left them alone. I’m actually happy with the way they turned out. Plus, they’re personal! Or something.

Oopsie: I did not buy fancy bridal stamps or collect vintage stamps or anything of the like. I used these goofy guys:

Things I Did Wrong with Our Save-the-Dates : wedding cincinnati diy save the dates Pets pets

I win: I care way more about these babies than I ever could about stamps. So what if our save the dates and invites have silly pet faces on them? Even the littlest thing I could do to promote the adoption of shelter pets is a win in my book.

Now, on to the invitations…

Tell me this: did you DREAD invitations after you did save the dates? Because, like, I could weep just thinking about it.

Ugh, I DREAD invites. But girl, I’m seriously lovin’ on your save the dates! The sender is usually the ONLY one concerned about labels or envelopes or stamps, so no sweat : )

& I’m happy you went with the pet faces–we used butterflies in an attempt to spice up our envelopes (which we too smacked labels on).

I had the same issue with out clear labels!!! A few of our STD’s didn’t make it due to rain =( Why wasn’t this mentioned before? After all the work I put into assembling them it was upsetting to find out some of the addressed labels were wiped clear! Oh well, lesson learned- dreading invitations as well !!

I used those stamps for our save the dates as well!! I also used the clear labels, so hopefully they didn’t get wet along the way…

I can’t believe you did these yourself…they look fantastic. And I’m sure the labels were just fine in the mailing process and all your guests received them without problem!

They look SO awesome! I used smudgy labels and adoption stamps, too, and got compliments on both, so BWAHHH! Your “and” and “the” ornaments are sweeeeet, by the way.

Ahh, I avoided so many of these issues by doing a save the date video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPFTZBvc9tU

Of course, we didn’t get everyone’s email addresses right, so not everyone got it, but whatevs, they’ll figure it out.

Too cute! Most people aren’t even going to notice the envelopes, so I wouldn’t worry about that - just ,pray for some good weather so the addresses stay inked! ;)

They turned out great! You totally win! Hoping for sunny days during their transit.

If it’s in your budget, let someone else do your invites. Etsy is brilliant for them. You can always add little flourishes here and there but if you can avoid a headache over them, I suggest it. =)

You’re blog entry basically reiterated every span of emotions I went through with my save the dates…and yes I’m very proud of mine. I even got compliments from people who thought they were professionally done. That goes to show you the everyday invitee to your wedding has no clue what proper wedding save the date etiquette is!

Your STDs are super cute. I love the hint of vintage floral. I never thought about the ink on my faux calligraphy smudging, I sure hope it didn’t, but I got pretty satisfied with things not being perfect too :)
