About Mrs. Jaguar

Whoops!

January 12th, 2011 @ 5:45 pm by Mrs. Jaguar

Was anyone else unpleasantly surprised to find out how much bridal stores will try to charge you for accessories like shoes and veils? I knew they would be marked up, but I didn’t realise quite how much, and how extensively. When I bought my dress in Canada they offered to sell me the veil I tried on along with it, but I was already wayyyy over budget thanks to the lace bolero I’d splurged on too. I figured that was something I could easily pick up after doing some shopping back in Sydney, and that it might actually work out cheaper to wait and see what the price range was like.

Ha! HA. HAHAHAHAHA.

Yep, bridal store to bridal store in whatever country you’re visiting, veils are expensive.

And while I would love to go a little bit mental and snap up the most crystal-encrusted, satin flowing veil I could find, I’m on a budget. And as far as our budget for the whole day is concerned? The veil is not the highest priority for me. I know I want one, but I’m fairly sure that I’ll be wearing it for the ceremony and some photographs only—I always imagined I’d be a veil-free girl at the reception, to let my hair down {so to speak} at the end of a long day.

So…there was my dilemma. I wanted a veil, but I didn’t want to spend a lot. My next option was to see if I could re-use a veil that someone else had worn and loved on their wedding day; my very own ‘something borrowed’ that would be thrifty AND meaningful. I still love this idea, actually. If you know anyone willing to share, drop me a line!

Until I found a veil. It was perfect: one tier, sheer fabric, basic satin lining at the base & sat perfectly at my fingertips. I immediately shoved it straight into my hair, twirled around for a bit, and decided I was done. The veil, I has it. I lovingly carried it upstairs, and debated where to put it—especially tricky since Mr. Jaguar and I were moving the following day, and I didn’t want it stored anywhere that he would accidentally discover it.

That’s when my genius struck: I’ll keep it in with my wedding dress! If there was one thing the boy is sure not to go near, it’s the garment bag. It’s perfect! I placed the veil back in its packaging, hung it up over the dress hanger, tucked it into the garment bag as far as it would go, and quickly pulled up the zipper to seal it in, safe as can be.

{insert ripping sound effect}

Errrrr. So, um, the zipper caught on the veil packaging on the way up. And not only did it get the packaging, it also caught on the actual netting, too. Yup, I tore a hole in my brand new veil. And you can tell just how new the darn thing was, by the fact that I didn’t even have the time to take a picture of it in my hair! Not a single picture!

Epic fail.

What I failed to mention here is the cost of said-ruined-veil. Thankfully, I refrained from buying the veils I’d found in stores. Instead, I scoured eBay for the cheapest (and still nicest looking) one I could find – and I’d forked out less than ten bucks for the thing. Not the point though…I could’ve kicked myself for throwing a good thing away like that!

I’m still on the lookout for the perfect (affordable) veil, but in the meantime, do tell: did you have any unexpected disasters during your wedding planning?

The same thing happened to me! Well, not a zipper, but the netting caught onto something [I still don't know what!] causing a tiny hole. I didn’t want it to get any bigger, so I took some clear thread, looks like a strand of gray hair, and loosely sewed it on. You could never see it when the veil is clipped in, only find it if you were to spread the veil out and search for it. I got my veil at a sample sale, so I knew there was no finding another. For me, the clear thread at $2 a spool was the answer.

I am so scared of something like that happening. I hope you find another one soon.

My veil is my “something borrowed.” I am borrowing it from one of my bridesmaids. She has her seamstress (which just so happens to also be MY seamstress) make it for her…and it only cost her $20! Maybe your seamstress will be willing to make one for you, too!

there are a lot of beautiful veils on etsy that are reasonably priced! I couldn’t justify spending a lot on something I only would wear down the aisle

Italian tradition states that a whole in the viel is good luck…how big is it? If it is perfect and the hole is small enough I’d repair it… but that’s me and I am jus a nearly annonymous bee!

Oh, thats rubbish! I have to say though - nothing and i mean NOTHING is cheaper in Australia than what it is in North America! Even Aussie wine is cheaper over there, Coopers beer is cheaper, if american’s liked vegemite then that would be cheaper!

I negotiated to get my veil thrown in with my dress (and alterations too!) but it was still REALLY expensive!!

Thanks all! I’m such a clutz!

@bunnylovesbear: Good idea - I still have to FIND a seamstress for my dress alterations, but worth asking, for sure.
@Brooke Aiello: Ooh, what a great tradition! Unfortunately my wee tiny hole was turned into a massive, planet-sucking black hole by the time I’d wrangled it free of the zipper!
@Miss Sydney: Totally hear you on that one! That was part of the reason I went wedding dress shopping while I was in North America, and it’s a good thing I did too - I haven’t seen my dress at a similar price ANYWHERE here since being back. Nice work on the negotiating!

OMG! That SUCKS! I hope you find something inexpensive to replace it. My mom just went to a craft store that happened to sell wedding things. She purchased some lined tulle and that became my veil, if that helps.

Aweeee!!! That’s awful! Thank goodness it was an inexpensive veil! I was on the search for a veil too! The one that I was IN LOVE with was $600… almost as much as my wedding dress. Ridic, I know. So I purchased some lace off eBay and had someone make my veil for me. Total cost? $120. Not the best, but I still got my lace chapel length veil for about 1/6th the cost of the one in store.

I think when you are a Bride, people must see a big sign on your head that says “rip me off.” Seriously.

Mom opted to buy the veil I tried on because she had an “AWWWW” moment when I tried it on, so I admit I do have a way overpriced veil.

But the consultant also had me try on a few jewelry options, including a short necklace that was three strands of pearls and a costume-y brooch. The consultant and my mom both loved it, but I already owned some jewelry I wanted to wear so I exercised veto power. When we were at the counter paying for the veil and the dress deposit, I caught sight of the price tag on the necklace they’d had me try on…$850! For a necklace I didn’t even like! Hahaha, nice try guys.

You should make your veil yourself. There are tons of tutorials out there, though I doubt you’d need one. It’s about the easiest DIY project ever if you just want a simple veil.

I got my veil from BellaBridalVeils on Etsy. She’ll make anything you want! I got a custom one that sold for $250 in the bridal shops for $55. And that’s the expensive side because I wanted lots of crystals. Plain ones are around $20-30!

@linguo42: Wowsers, that’s insane! Do people actually BUY that stuff?

@NoneOfYourBeeswax: This would be an awesome option.. if could thread a needle. Really, I am the most ridiculously bad crafter you’ve ever met.

@Mustang: Thanks for the tip! I shall check them out. :)

Check out occanseydesigns website. Their veils are reasonably priced. My drop veil only cost 65$ including shipping. All their veils are customizable too. Good luck with your search!!

That’s awful! I was shocked at the cost of all the accessories, too! I had a pretty modest dress budget and I kept telling my dress consultant to keep me under budget. So I was shocked when she had me try on a veil that was almost as much as my dress budget! I fell in lvoe with it and then she told me the price. I didn’t even think to give her a budget for the veil.

OMG! I pulled what I thought to be an epic fail 2 days before my wedding. I had my B-Party 2 days before the wedding and my MOH asked me to pull out her dress and iron it too (we were getting dressed for the party in her hotel room and I was already ironing my shirt). I said sure, pulled out her MOH dress and touched the iron to it (totally not fabric you should iron, Charmuse?) and it wrinkled up so fast. Thanksfully it didnt burn but it did change the texture of the fabric. I smoothed it out fast but was so stressed that I ruined something for my own wedding and on my MOH none the less!! Luckily it smoothed out enough by the wedding and no one could tell at all in person or in pictures. I felt like such a jerk and seriously lost sleep the night before the wedding over the dress!

You should look on etsy for veils. I got a cathedral length veil for $25.. much better than the same one they were selling at Davids Bridal for over $200! OUCH!!

Ouch! That is no fun. Thank goodness you didn’t pay much for it. I’m sure you can find one of equal awesomeness, but that still really bites.
