Buying Our Wedding Rings

Buying Our Wedding Rings : wedding catalina island rings 1 1

My experience looking for wedding bands was very different than Mr. Pashmina’s. I knew what I wanted. In one word: Sparkles! My question was how to get it at a good price and with a comfortable fit. I never knew how girly and glamorous I could feel wearing a ring until Mr. Pashmina got me my engagement ring. Now I wanted more!

My engagement ring is beautiful, but it isn’t the most comfortable ring to wear because it is a little thick. I assume one reason is because they need to fit the diamonds in the band, but if I put all my fingers together you can feel the metal ring and it feels weird. I wanted a wedding ring that when worn would feel like wearing nothing at all. But this wasn’t going to be easy, I didn’t want a plain metal band like Mr. Pash. I wanted something that sparkled like my e-ring.

I could go a few different ways. I could try to find a matching a matching band, or look for a very thin ring that would “go”, or get an eternity band.

I did want sparkles, but maybe not all over. I quickly realized how expensive eternity rings were. Was it worth it? I hated twisting my e-ring so all the diamonds were perfectly symmetrical. But was it worth the extra bucks not to turn a ring? If I wore it with my e-ring with it then I would still be turning a ring on finger? So, was the purpose behind getting an eternity band purposeless? To me, right now in my life, an eternity band wasn’t that necessary. A three-sided ring would be more than enough. Since I would most likely be wearing the two together––I imagine 90% of the time––I might as well have them both requiring a twist.

After looking at the collection I knew that I wanted one that was similar to my engagement ring. When I put on rings of different styles—which, in theory, I love––it just seemed too busy, too much going on, not quite right. I knew for something that I was going to wear every day it needed to be clean, versatile, and something I felt went with everything. So that left me trying to find a match.

To my surprise there were lots of “matches” to my e-ring. The jeweler showed me all the sizes of wedding bands that were the exact same one as my engagement ring without the center diamond. There were larger, thicker versions and smaller, thinner ones. I gravitated to the smaller one after trying it on, putting my fingers together and not feeling much metal-hand contact. But then jeweler showed me how when placed together there is a “step” between the rings—basically it would create a mini-pyramid effect. They were perfectly aligned; one wasn’t thicker than the other. Then the jeweler showed me the “perfect pair” to the engagement ring I love so much. It really did look good…but it was more expensive. As if reading my groom spoke up and said under your breath, “you might as well get the one that matches it perfectly.”

They had a three hundred dollar price difference. Of course, my match was the more expensive one. Then I got schooled by Mr. P, “don’t be cheap on this, not this time. It matches perfectly, you should get what you want.” I instantaneously heard his voice of reason. The perfect match really was the ring I really wanted. Might as well splurge this time, especially since it wasn’t a huge price difference…and it’d be better than buying a totally new ring down the road.

In a matter of just 20 minutes I picked out my ring. It really wasn’t very difficult at all. Finally!

Check out a picture of mine and his! Cute, no?! His choice? A titanium comfort fit 8 mm ring with a brushed and satin finish. Mine? A channel set diamond set band with alternating round and rectangular stones.

Did you opt for the match of your engagement ring? Do you wear your wedding ring solo or do you stack them? Did you “splurge” on the band you really wanted? Why or why not?

Beautiful, Pashmina! Your e-ring looks LOTS like mine, and my wedding band is pretty similar too. Love shiny channel bands, beautiful choice!

I always like it when the band matches the e-ring. I don’t have an e-ring but if I did it would definitely match. Yours look so pretty together!

Very pretty, looks like the perfect match to your lovely e-ring!!
As of now, I don’t think I want a wedding band. I am a very simple jewelry kind of gal myself, and my engagement ring is sooo very beautiful on its own, I can’t picture a wedding band next to it, and I’m not sure if I’d like it (not to mention I cringed when the guy where he bought it said they’d just file down the prongs on one side to connect the two). For his wedding band, we will be getting some type of metal yet TBD, with a wood inlay. Now I might want a matching one to his band just to have in cases where I don’t want to wear the e-ring.

My ring actually has both white and black diamonds on it. I absolutely love that it is different. But both my fiance and I have black diamonds on our rings.

FI and I definitely splurged on ours. After all, they’re going to get worn every day for the rest of the forseeable future!

I was at a loss for what band to put with my custom e-ring, but our jeweller came up with a gorgeous complementary design, and they will match very nicely :)

so pretty! Great choice. On a day-to-day basis, I’ve been wearing just my wedding band. I wear my e-ring on days that feel ’special’.

Your set is gorgeous!! You’re right, $300 now is a drop in the bucket compared to a new ring later! My e-ring has pave diamonds on the sides, but not all the way around, so while part of me wanted the matching eternity band, I just got the matching partial. Besides, if I ever needed it sized up or down, I won’t have to worry about losing/adding diamonds!

@Mrs. Hot Wings: Five months later I’ve sorta been doing the opposite. Wearing the wedding band on days I feel sporty and it actually is really, really comfy!

@Moffy: That is a really good point. It would be a total bummer to resize and lose/need to add diamonds. Never thought of that.

@vscheidt891: I love the idea of keeping with a specific detail/style for your and your grooms ring. Sounds hot!

We went totally cheapo on my band, at least. His was a bit more. I have a three-diamond setup, so I thought additional sparkles would be distracting. And I needed a narrow band (the band is relatively wide on my e-ring. I also just didn’t care about it (physically, not symbolically, of course) as much, so it was a pretty quick-and-dirty decision.

Wow!! We have identical e- and wedding rings! I wanted sparkles too, and with the 2 of them together everyday, i certainly get tons of sparkles. Good choice :)
