String Lanterns

January 13th, 2011 @ 10:47 am by Miss Oatmeal

Holy smokes! I was jumping from wedding blog to wedding blog the other day when I came across this:

Miss Oatmeal likey!

Besides being one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen, I just knew I had to have it at our wedding. And there is a link to a DIY tutorial. I immediately bookmarked it and promised myself I would tackle this project soon enough. Yarn, glue, balloons. Seriously, how much easier can this get? It looks fairly messy, though, so I’ll have to get my hands on a tarp somehow.

That isn’t my picture, duh, since I haven’t even started the project yet. But it does get me a bit excited about what I have to look forward to. I think I’ll add a few supplies to the list, though: ugly sweats, a Murphy*-free apartment, and the patience to wait 24 hours to pop the balloon.

So, who has a tarp lying around? And who would like to sign up to be my partner for this messiness?

Have you ever done anything like this before? And do you think this is as awesome as I do?

*Murphy is my four-pound Chihuahua, and my annoying voice makes him do that.

We made these when I was in grade school as an art project.

This is actually planned as an essential part of my decor, but not as lanterns I will just be having the on tables. I got the idea from Mrs Argyle she blogged about doing it although I haven’t seen pics of how it turned as she hasn’t done her recaps yet. I haven’t quite figured out how far in advance of the wedding to get started though. I hope it works out well for you!

Like missrobots, we made these in grade school, I think it was an easter basket alternative though. I would suggest some cheap painters plastic drop cloths…good luck with this…it shouldn’t be so bad, just messy!

I’m pretty sure Young House Love tried this project - google it on their blog. Although I think it was a failure but you could read up on it! good luck!

Use a cheap shower curtain from the dollar store instead of a tarp

I’ve tried this project 2 times. The first one I made, then decided that sitting for 20 minutes blowing it with my blow-drier would be just as good as waiting 24 hours to let it dry…FAIL! I popped the balloon and the string collapsed in on itself.

Try 2, I waited the 24 hours, and it worked! It’s not 100% perfect yet, so I want to try again, but I was encouraged by getting one to keep its shape!

Good luck!

I love this idea. I plan on trying to make these. I think about bee brought this idea up once before. I can’t seem to remember who it was though.

Those are so cool! I have a tarp in my trunk that I can bring over … next time I’m in California. :) (Seriously, though, it was about $4 from Ikea, if you’re really in the tarp market.)

I bookmarked the first photo one day with the title “How do I do this?” and then found exact same tutorial a couple of weeks later. If I lived anywhere near you, I would sign up for the messiness!!! I think this is still my most wanted project for the wedding.

I saw Ms. Argyle’s post about doing these for centerpieces at the table, and we fell in love with them. We just dried ours on parchment paper and they easily peeled off - I don’t think you need to get tarps or anything crazy like that.

We made our test ones back in October, and they still look great as of today - they will definitely hold up for months!

I love your get down and dirty attitude towards DIY projects. I remember doing this in elementary school and thinking it was the COOLEST THING IN THE WORLD! Now I would probably do this the grown up way: with some newspaper put down and lots of wine. You can totally do this!

Looks like I’ll be making these in the next couple of months! It’s a good thing I’m not afraid of getting messy but the end result definitely looks worth it!
