Mrs. Prairie Dog's Picture
Mrs. Prairie Dog, Cincinnati Age and Occupation: 24, Program Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, PhD/Biomedical Engineer Engagement Date: December 18, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Glendale Lyceum About Me: I'm a pilgrim soul of a girl with a house full of books and a coffee addiction that could slay Juan Valdez. My life is a whirl of grammar correction, good music, glue-gunning, and two pets named Hazel and Winston Churchill. I'm marrying my high school boyfriend in a formal-ish spring affair, roughly themed: "Elizabeth Bennet crashes a party co-hosted by Jay Gatsby and Cath Kidston, and loves it."
About Mrs. Prairie Dog

Okay, ’bee readers. I need your help finding a reception dress.

…which is hard for me to admit. I consider myself a talented shopper. Even if I invent an item in my head, I will find it. I thrive on the HUNT in shopping, so I know my way around everywhere from the best consignment shops and outlets to ring-the-doorbell, high-end retailers. I do the whole internet she-bang: Rue LaLa and Gilt, net-a-porter and outnet, Shop-It-To-Me round-ups, ShopStyle and Bluefly and ASOS, Etsy and eBay, along with Pre-Owned Dresses and Once Wed.

And I cannot find the stupid dress that I invented in my head. I don’t even NEED a reception dress (of course I don’t) but I really want one on-hand for if we high-tail it to the English pub post-reception. (Given my family and friends…highly likely.)

There are two dresses that I was in LOVE with prior to get engaged. (Not that I, uh, looked at dresses before then…)

Shopping Failure (A Cry for Help) : wedding cincinnati dress Priscil priscil

(source)

[Priscilla of Boston perfection]

Shopping Failure (A Cry for Help) : wedding cincinnati dress Veraw VeraW

(source)

[I wanted to marry this Vera Wang dress, but I cannot find a place that still has it for the life of me.]

Basically, I’d love to find something like these two dresses. Criteria:

  • At least cocktail/formal
  • Preferably a matte satin material—not cotton or brocade, etc.
  • Short or 3/4 sleeves (sheer is okay)
  • 34″ length or longer (AKA not a butt-grazing mini)
  • I’d prefer a fitted, pencil shape for the skirt (as opposed to a wide, circle skirt), as it suits my frame better. But…beggars can’t be choosers, people. I’ll take what I can get.
  • I’d rather be able to return it (i.e. not all Etsy/eBay things are an option)
  • Price = I don’t care. I’d probably sell it post-wedding anyway.

So I ask you: have you seen any thing that sounds even remotely like what I am describing? Do you have any secret, gold mine websites? The desperation compels me to look at every link you have for me, so give ’em up if you got ’em!

And for the love of PETE, has anyone in bloggyland seen a sneak peek of Anthropologie’s forthcoming wedding collection? PM it to me! Nobody has to know…

check out ideeli.com it’s a site like rulala, but I’ve found a ton more stuff on there that i’ve actually bought (wearing one right now)

I just checked their latest sales and there’s one that ends in 15hours that has some of what you’re looking for. The sale is called Taylor and all of the dresses are $59

This one is pretty plain but you can get it in many colors and fabrics, and you can make it more exciting with a sash or flower or something:

Oof. My head hurts after only searching for a few minutes. Way to go, PD, for loving a dress that is clearly impossible to find! lol

Seriously though, are you totally against hiring someone local to make it? I know you said you favored a return policy… Or what about doing a sleeveless number & jazzing it up with a light bolero? I know it’s not ideal, but boleros can be sassy and entirely too adorable for words.

SHEESH. Good luck.

Have you looked at the Little White Dresses by Amsale. They are amazing! I plan on getting one for my reception. Just not sure which one yet.

Not a dress suggestion, but a vote for not buying another dress. I went to a bar after my afternoon wedding in my dress (and veil). I had soooo much fun! I loved the attention and was offered a few free drinks too. Luckily, I had worn my shoes around the house enough that they were comfortable.

This seems perfect except that it is lilac: http://www.bluefly.com/Badgley-Mischka-Platinum-Label-lilac-taffeta-bow-detail-sheath-dress/cat20114/309501101/detail.fly

Maybe search other Badgley Mischka dresses? Or check bluefly for some other cocktail options?

I second stalking Ideel.com RueLala.com and maybe signing up for MyNines which will alert you to specific sales. I also highly recommend stalking Preownedweddingdresses.com and Recycledbride.com and other sites like them. It’s so friggin hard to find something when you have it in mind!! Good luck!!

Ms. PD, not sure your size but I live in Cincinnati and have a reception dress that I’d love to just give you if you liked it! (I loved it but never got to wear it). I’m not sure how to PM you to send you pics….

I would recommend checking out ModCloth as they have lots of white and ivory dresses that are great and could fit your criteria.

I wore this one for my leaving the reception dress, it meets some of your criteria. It was good quality and people loved it!

Check out Nordstom! I am personally a huge fan of the Suzi Chin Maggy Dress in the 7th row, but this gives you lots of options

I tried to post a comment but I guess it wasn’t approved because I had more than one link? Anyway, I’m not sure if this fits your criteria but I think it’s pretty cute: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=515244&PARTNER_ID=EMAIL1&BANNER_ID=i103

Watters/WToo and Ivy and Aster would be my top two suggestions

Any bridesmaid dress line… Dessy would probably have a great selection

Nordstrom, Saks 5th Avenue

BCBG has some especially cute white dresses most of the time

I second ModCloth, and would also recommend Ruche, Anthropologie, Francesca’s Collections, and Lulu’s.
