About Mrs. Eggs Benedict

Little Black Dress

January 14th, 2011 @ 2:28 pm by Mrs. Eggs Benedict

I’m still loving the idea of having all of my girls in black dresses and the guys in charcoal suits. We’re working on the details (like ties and pocket squares for the guys, and the pops of color that will accent the girls’ black dresses), but I realized I needed to give them some visual representations of what I had envisioned. (Other than just, hey guys, go buy a black dress! Which, let’s face it, is pretty much all I had told them before sending them some suggestions.)

I found all of these dresses at Nordstrom, but I also really like a lot of the J. Crew options, as well as some at White House Black Market and Macy’s.

My main goal is for all of my girls to be comfortable, feel beautiful, and be happy standing by my side when Mr. EB and I get married. As for adding color—well, I still like the idea of colorful shoes. But whether that pans out or not, part of my gift to my girls will be pashminas. (Uh, guys, if you’re reading this, I guess I just spoiled that part…but I’ve got a couple other tricks up my sleeve, don’t worry!) Since we’re getting married in winter and most of the dresses that I like don’t have sleeves, I really wanted to give them something that will help keep them warm. And be pretty! Adding color to the ceremony and reception just makes for a nice bonus.

I’ve been trying to decide if I wanted to give some of the girls blue and some green, or keep them all in one color. And then I thought about putting my sister (who is my maid of honor) in the burgundy one. (Yes, burgundy isn’t exactly one of our colors, but I’m more into having a general color palette that I use for inspiration rather than sticking precisely to two colors.) But then I made my best friend a co- maid of honor, and I’m not sure about having both of them with burgundy shawls. So they might just all end up in blue. Luckily these were not very expensive, and I got several extra so I can play with what I want to do right up until I give them to my girls.

Anyway—what do you think? I’m starting to think that if I go with this I might end up nixing the colorful-shoe idea in favor of black or silver shoes so as to not go overboard…but I’m not sure I’m ready to give up on that one quite yet.

This is exactly what I’m doing for my wedding. I was thinking of doing different shawl colors for each girl (4 total), and I’m still undecided about shoes. I loved that picture you posted of the girls in black dresses with those amazing colored shoes.

I think you should still do the colored shoes because. that way, if the girls take off their pashminas for the reception, they still have a pop of color. Plus, it will make for some really cute photos.

Maybe… give the girls alternating blue and green pashminas and have them get shoes in their non-pashmina color? Or tell them to let loose and pick whatever color they want - it may not present the most cohesive look, but realistically, who is examining that detail and only that detail? Even if the shoes don’t match and look “weird” to some people, I’m sure the day on a whole will be amazing and beautiful to all.

I wore the dress in the upper left hand corner for a wedding in September. All of us bridesmaid wore that dress, and it was pretty flattering on everyone. (Also, I have it in a Size 6 if anyone wants to buy it off me!)

We’re doing something similar - though I’m still on the lookout for a) cheap pashminas or b) cheap robes for getting ready. Definitely love the colour pop!

You and I think alike Miss Eggs Benedict, my girls will also be wearing black dresses they are picking for themselves. I bought the girls hot pink and black shoes so they all match and we are trying to find affordable pink cardigans or shrugs as well. I love the idea of having little bursts of color, but I’m also trying to think of my lovely ladies outside in the midst of a potentially cold day in fall wearing short sleeveless gowns.

I think it was a great idea to buy extra pashminas so you have time to make the decision and not stress out later if you change your mind.

All my bridesmaids picked out their own little black dress and they were awesome. They look great in the wedding photos wearing something that they like and fits their body type. It was the best non-decision decision I ever made! They all wore black shoes, but I got them different colored shawls to wear. It looked good. I wouldn’t go with different color shoes, it might be a little much.

I really love the black dresses for bridesmaids. (Probably won’t get to, because my sisters aren’t fans but I think it’s awesome)

I’d also still go with colored shoes. Even with the pashminas, I personally love the pop of color on the feet with black dresses.

I think it would look nice with both the pashminas and colored shoes. The ladies won’t be wearing the pashminas the whole time. But having matching pashminas might make it a little more cohesive if you think it might be too much.

If your ceremony is indoors, they wouldn’t have to wear the pashminas during the ceremony. They could just use them for photos beforehand and to keep warm during the reception.

I was at the mall with one of my BMs and we found a dress we fell in love with. Sadly it only came in up to a 16 and I had a larger girl I needed to accommodate.

On of my amazing BMs went on a hunt. My computer is being difficult and will not let me put the link to the dresses my ladys got, but Fashion Bug worked out really well for us! They have Reg and Plus size dresses in the same style, the ones we got look great on everyone, and we ended up getting them on sale for $35!

I too am doing black dresses (short or maxi tbd) and love the idea of pashminas. Although I will be getting married in September it will be at the coast and the evening cools off quite a bit. Where did you get the pashminas? Thanks!
