A Cake Topper Dilemma

January 14th, 2011 @ 12:04 pm by Miss Oatmeal

Why do I feel like so many bees have posted about cake toppers lately? Miss Hippo, I feel ya. Miss Panther, just adorable. And let’s not forget Miss Lox, whose post had me giddy with excitement to click the “Read more…” link.

When looking at the big picture of a wedding, it seems so silly to spend more than a few minutes giving this a thought. But, alas, I’ve joined the club. The Cake Toppers Are Consuming My Life Club. I’m such an exaggerator.

Let’s talk about sweets!

Confession: I don’t really like cake. And I absolutely hate fondant. When I go to weddings I never even take one bite. With that said, I do like confetti cake. I’m talking the kind in the box with the jar of confetti frosting. So swanky.

Well, we’ve decided that we’re going to have a dessert bar at the wedding for a few reasons:

  1. They’re adorable and can be done in many wonderful ways.
  2. I’ve been to a couple weddings with a dessert bar, and I’m always pleasantly surprised at the various choices.
  3. I don’t like cake, as previously mentioned.

But, Mr. Oatmeal likes cake. And what kind of cake does he like? Confetti cake. So we’re going to have a small, two-tier confetti cake for cutting in addition to all the goodies at the table. Here’s what I have in mind:

Don’t you just love how these look? The first picture has a cake that’s about the size I want. It’s so gosh darn cute. But here’s where I run into a problem: most cake toppers I’ve come across are terrible. Want proof?

I’m sure this cake topper has a time and a place. But I’m sorry to say that’s not at our wedding. I’m exaggerating a bit since they aren’t all this awful, but I still haven’t been able to find anything I love. Maybe I need to make one. The thing is, I have no idea what I want; I just have tons of ideas of what I don’t want. But here are a few that have caught my eye:

What are your thoughts? And, really, why are these things so expensive?

Those birds are so stinkin cute! But, yeah…I don’t get how they could be so expensive, either.

They are expensive simply because we love them! Ridiculas!

I plan on getting a simple “B” for our cake topper. I just can’t justify spending over $100 for a cake topper! I’m hoping to be able to make one so it is the exact same font as the “B” in our monogram.

Our “groom’s cake”, however, will have a Kansas basketball player (my FI’s favorite team) along with a Nebraska Football player (my favorite team). :o)

I love confetti cake! It is absolutely my favorite and secretly asked our wedding cake lady to make our cake look like confetti cake. No one else knows because I am sure they would not love it as much as I do! I completely agree with you on cake toppers, I would be more apt to doing a nontraditional random piece of art than 2 figures of some kind (people, birds, monkeys). I do love them, they just aren’t us.

Funfetti is my favorite too! FI makes one for my b-day every year. We are having my dad custom-make our topper because none of the toppers we saw were working for us. Good luck in the search!

It was hard for me to decide also, partly because of cost, CRAZY, and partly because
nothing really suited us.
Etsy, obviously, has all kinds of ideas.
I found a simple birchwood topper, for get this, $10.00!!! I got it within a week of ordering.

love this post, my inner voice said “me, too!” like 6 or 7 times. I LOOOVE that garland topper, i’m gonna take that on as a DIY project! Fabric, string, some sort of stick.. can’t be too hard, right?

We went with feathers to go with a vaguely vintage theme, and it worked out beautifully and CHEAPLY. Maybe there’s something in-theme for you that you can use as cost-effective inspiration. I like the birchwood topper above.

I completely agree. Cake toppers are super expensive. Just keep looking for a cute little topper at an affordable price. I refuse to spend that much money on one.

I do love the idea of mini-bunting flags, that’s definitely an easy DIY project!

I have no idea why those darn things cost so much. I decided to view ours as not just a cake topper, but a keepsake we could always display in our home too. That’s how I slept at night after paying for it, at least. ;)

Try looking into salt and pepper shakers. They are cheap, and then you can actually use them after the wedding. If you do an amazon search a whole bunch pop up- several of them would work for weddings. Esp if you have a favorite animal or something. I wanted books- I ended up finding antique book salt and pepper shakers on an auction site. They cost 7$, including shipping :)

Funfetti is the best cake ever!
I actually really like the simple heart topper in your first photo–it would be east to replicate and would save some money too. All your inspiration photos are amazing though and I can’t wait to see what you choose!

I agree, spending more than $100 on a cake topper seems crazy to me! I don’t even think we will have one, just isn’t that important to me. I find most are too cutesy anyway. But those birds are adorable!

Our favorite cake is confetti too!!! I was totally planning on having a 2 tiered funfettie cake for cutting along with our sweets table but when we went to our cake tasting my FI fell in love with the red velvet and lemon so we are going that route instead.

Love the last one, and I looove the idea of a tiers confetti cake. What makes that cake so good? Really?

But, honestly, I have no idea why those things are so much money! Drives me crazy!

I made my own cake topper using the last DIY Friday post about them. It’s one of those wooden people customized to look like us kind of things. Maybe too trendy for some people, but I haven’t seen them around where I live and I think they’re awesome. It turned out SO cute, and I saved myself over $120 (the ones Etsy go for $160, which was way too much for me). It was also a really fun and pretty easy DIY project, so that’s something to consider if you’re into that sort of thing.

I make wedding cakes, and I’ve made custom cake toppers for some of my clients. They cost that much because they take a lot freakin’ longer to make than you think! I’ll start one, thinking “oh, this won’t take that long” and four hours later I’m still wrestling tiny pieces of whatever and cursing that I didn’t charge enough. Depending what they’re made of, they’re not fast. The birds are really cute, but they say that they’re hand-stitched, so that explains a good bit of the price.
