Change of Address

January 14th, 2011 @ 6:29 pm by Mrs. Zebra

A little unexpected something or other occurred that’s really kind of, well, a giant pain in the ass. So, in true Zebra fashion, I want you to learn from this mistake, because garsh darnit, changing your email address three months before your wedding sucks ass.

Change of Address : wedding providence resources You Re you-re-

YEAH EMAIL! STOP IT.

You see, it’s my fault really. I’ve been begging my parents to get accustomed to computers for quite some time now. With the creation of my blog, my mom started to use the internet on her dinosaur of a PC to keep up with my wedding ramblings. Then the telephone calls started…

What’s this Mac-a-fee thingy that is on my screen?

What’s my email address?

How do I get to such and such a website?

My personal favorite is when my father called me…

“Zeebs, ummm, I’m trying to get on this uh website. It’s ummmm called…You Tube?”

So yes, I knew it was only a matter of time before my mother realized just how out of date her computer was. It’s not fast enough. I thought it was a perfect beginner’s speed but I was not in the same company for long. So, my siblings and I went in on a nice laptop for them for Christmas. We’ve had our Verizon coverage for a long long LONG time. I’m talking modem hooked into the phone line, long.

Can you tell where this is going? My mother wants to switch internet carriers, and to make a long story (sorta) short…the email address I’ve been using as my primary for nearly 10 years is being deleted. Read deeper between the lines. This is the digital age—all my wedding correspondance has been online.

Every single last one of our vendors needs to be notified of my email address change. It’s crucial time too. It’s meetings and contract reviewing and all that good stuff time. But that is only the tip of the iceberg…

I’ve had to forward two years worth of wedding emails to my other addresses. Which is just peachy because identifying them when they are all sent from me is rather difficult. GAH!

I’ve had to notify all of the websites who send my forgotten password to the Verizon email that they need to send those forget-me-nots on over to another email address: banking, college loans, alumni associations, travel clubs, members-only websites, registries, Twitter, Netflix, EVERYTHING!

It’s been a huge time suck. Don’t let me fool you though. I waited until the last minute to do it. Stupid. I’m having a hard time parting with my old email. It’s a sad day, an end of an era. Boo hoo.

So… in order to make YOUR life easier might I suggest something? When you have important emails that you’ll always need, like say your vendor communications or all your threads talking about the shower you are planning for your best friend…use a free email address like Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail… whatever. After losing my college email, my AOL email, and now my Verizon, I have finally, finally learned my lesson.

One of my worst fears with regards to aging is that someday I will be like your parents with technology….

Ohhh, that is sucky. My husband WILL NOT give up his comcast.net email address; it is ancient. For wedding correspondence we made up a new joint email address hisname.myname.ourlastname@gmail.com
(Though obviously that wouldn’t help for all your other correspondence- sad :(

It was fantastic to be able to use the alternate address for when I decided to sign up for every giveaway under the sun and only get stuff related to that at that email!

I know the feeling Miss Zebra, I had to do the same thing when my parents decided to switch internet providers 2 years ago and I still get people trying to send me stuff to the old address. I’m incredibly lucky however that this happened pre-wedding planning. I can’t even imagine how difficult this must be on you now. Hang in there! Of all the bumps in the wedding road you have to face at least this isn’t something to fear on your wedding day.

Ouch. FI got me a new phone for Christmas and I decided to keep the new number that came with it. I immediately contacted my wedding planner, vendors, officiant etc. with my new number and was feeling all smug about being on top of things. Then I realized the other day that I forgot to update it with the store I ordered my wedding dress from. Might I add that my dress should be arriving any day now? Yeah, that was an oops.

ugh… I’m totally dreading changing my email address after getting married, since I figure my current address which uses my maiden name will look kind of silly. Even though I’ll be past the planning phase by then, I’m still wringing my hands at just the thought of it.

Your story about your dad calling about youtube made me think of my own dad who has had his fair share of tech-challenged moments. We just got him an iPhone and I think his longest text to date is “Ok”… but that’s 2 letters longer than his previous personal best!

E-mail forwarding. It is amazing. (Then again, this probably doesn’t work well if the primary address is being deleted.)

@crayfish: Me too! I hope I am able to keep with the times as I age.

@linguo42: Awww Man!! Give her a call. My bridal salon didn’t tell me my dress was in because they wanted to wait until after busy season. It was a year in advance so -no big deal.

@JillBill: I made a married last name email address too but I felt silly giving it out now… so I’ll be changing again in a few months.

@Jenniphyr: I email forwarded for the last month or so and I’m sort of kind of hoping that in some sick twist of fate it will work on a deleted email.

Yikes!! That sounds like the last thing you need right before the wedding. Good luck!
