Mrs. Prairie Dog's Picture
Mrs. Prairie Dog, Cincinnati Age and Occupation: 24, Program Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, PhD/Biomedical Engineer Engagement Date: December 18, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Glendale Lyceum About Me: I'm a pilgrim soul of a girl with a house full of books and a coffee addiction that could slay Juan Valdez. My life is a whirl of grammar correction, good music, glue-gunning, and two pets named Hazel and Winston Churchill. I'm marrying my high school boyfriend in a formal-ish spring affair, roughly themed: "Elizabeth Bennet crashes a party co-hosted by Jay Gatsby and Cath Kidston, and loves it."
About Mrs. Prairie Dog

…whoaaaaaaa, that was a stretch, wasn’t it people? I was going to go with “To Bang or Not to Bang,” but that sounded like a wedding night poll. Sorry, sisters. No such luck.

We’re talkin’ about bangs, my friends. Fringe. And for me, that looks something like this:

The Unbearable Lightness of Bang(s) : wedding cincinnati hair Livingi livingi

(I took this picture to send to a hair expert friend, after I tried trimming them myself for the first time. It did not go well.)

A few years ago, I straight plagiarized Reese Witherspoon’s post-Ryan Phillipe hair. When I told my stylist that, she thought for a moment and said, “Yellow, strapless dress pictures?” YES. Exactly.

I think the bangs have served me well. They add a little something different to otherwise boring hair. I tend to like up-dos that include side-swept bangs. But then, we did our engagement pictures and everything changed.

I would actually love to know how many pictures Katie took that were rendered useless because of my bangs. It was a bit windy, and they were all over the place. I was constantly adjusting them, and then they looked stringy. You can sort of see what was happening here, only x100:

The Unbearable Lightness of Bang(s) : wedding cincinnati hair E J 096 e_j_096

Then I got to thinking…are they going to be annoying on our wedding day? And really, are they doing my round face/small forehead any favors…?

So I’ve been growing them out, just in case. Prior to having bangs, I just did a really deep side part, almost like faux bangs. Comme ceci:

The Unbearable Lightness of Bang(s) : wedding cincinnati hair Hairexa hairexa

I’M ON A BOAT

And now, at 5-ish months away, I’m not sure what to do.

Anyone have any advice on this? Bangs that made their wedding hair look awesome? Bangs that drove them crazy and messed up some pictures? Hair experts?

To bang or not to bang! LOL! Well if it’s in reference to your FI I say bang! LOL!

But seriously for your hair, I’m casting my vote in the “not to bang” because I don’t think that in these pics that your bangs are doing anything really special or helpful in adding to your beautiful face.

Besides, bangs for me end up driving me insane!

Try not to pull your hair out deciding what to do. Happy planning!

Weird question. Do you get sweaty when you’re nervous or hot or dancing? If the answer is yes, then I’d go with no bangs since they might get stuck to your forehead in a reallllly unflattering way.

Maybe you could keep letting them grow, and get the front layers of your hair angled a few weeks before your wedding so the bangs blend in with your long hair? I think 5 months is plenty long enough to grow them out to a length that works well with an updo. But I also think you could keep shorter bangs and whoever does your hair for the wedding should be able to make them stay perfectly in place with the right styling and product!

I like your faux bangs - that’s sort of what I do with my own hair. I would keep growing them out. Sounds like they’ll be less worrisome to you that way.

I obviously haven’t been married yet, but I hairsprayed the crap out of my bangs for our engagement photos and those suckers didn’t move. However, I was not sweating — shocker — which is where the real problems happen. Are you a sweater? :)

I totally had this dilemma and ended up with sticking with the bangs. On my wedding day they actually used so much hairspray that you couldn’t even tell that I had any and seemed like faux bangs. But I was able to have them during the reg festivities. I have a round/square face and small forehead so yeah, not quite sure if is the best for me…I am just trying to grow them out and now they are a little past nose. Not sure what to do now with them!

@Miss Bacon: So true, Bacon, (and welcome!!) at least for me–I LOOOOVE the look of bangs but I have a super shiny forehead when I sweat. I think the faux-bangs is a great idea cause it sounds like you can hairspray them in place to prevent the shiny, stringy look. And it looks so cute on you!

Bangs!! They are hawt!! A good hairdresser will know what to do with them- mine had just enough hairspray in them to keep them in place all day (bumble and bumble hairspray), but they didn’t look it.

I had long-ish swoopy bangs (on purpose so they could be tucked if needed), and it worked out pretty well. If you stay super short it might be a prob, tho.

I like your bangs! I just got some side-swept ones for a the first time a month or two ago and I really like the way they look, so for me, I saw bang :) You can always pin them back if you decide for a true up-do for your wedding hair!

I have the same dilemma, I love bangs on me but maybe not for my wedding day. I have started growing them out and if I don’t like it after my hair gets put in its updo I can always have my hair girl cut them right then and there. Good advice above though, gives me some points to think about!

I want to cyber-hug the crap out of you for this post. I recently returned to team bang, but I’m so nervous about them staying where they are supposed to during the wedding day! I know hairspray has worked in the past, but there have also been instances where it’s just cemented them in the improper position for the entirety of the evening.

On a happier note, that picture of you with a side part has inspired me to give that look a go, once my current fringies grow out into something of short layers.

i’m on a boat!!! heehee…

sorry, i mean to say, i’m curious about bangs too, as i’ve been contemplating getting them but since my hair is so stringy, i feel like nothing short of 3 cans of hairspray can get them to stay where i want them.

You are too cute. I kept my bangs down, I think they looked really good in the beginning and then kinda went all floopy towards the end. They were all over the place in some pictures too. But I cannot picture myself without bangs, really. Can you picture yourself without yours?

I am 30 years old and my MOM made me grow out my bangs for my wedding. She absolutely hated them and rather than hear her gripe about it, I grew them out. When I started growing them out they were the length that they are in my profile pic and now they are almost to my shoulders…I miss them so much!!! So I say- Bang Away!!!

I had a side-swept bang and my hair guru sprayed the sh*t out of them. I was worried because I constantly touch them during the day. But those babies DID NOT MOVE.

Did I ever mention that I lurve your engagement photos? No? I do.
