Save the Date!

January 15th, 2011 @ 6:55 pm by Mrs. Tartlet

It’s a common question amongst the engaged: “My wedding is in [insert month here]! When do we send our save the dates?” The sheer number of guidelines made my head spin. Ultimately, I loosely interpreted a snippet from Emily Post that states: “Save the date cards are usually mailed from three to four months prior to the wedding [...] but may be sent earlier for a destination wedding at a distant location.” The Tartlet translation? There is no set timing. Do what works best for you, your wedding, and your guests.

Since the majority of our guests are coming from out-of-town, Mr. Tartlet and I initially planned on mailing our STDs 6 months from the wedding. We were caught COMPLETELY off-guard when people started contacting us early in 2010 because they had to put in for their vacation days! The Tartlets found themselves in a bit of a pickle: we had grand plans to incorporate our engagement photos, but were running against the clock with a handful of people already notified via phone of our wedding date. We certainly didn’t want these to be an afterthought, so we adapted to the change and rapidly produced these bitty bundles to drop in the mail a full year before the wedding:

Because all of our guests will carefully open the envelope at the point (wishful thinking, I know), they’ll be greeted with this yummy looking liner and ribbon peeking out:

What happens if I give this ribbon a tug? *gasp* Little birdies flying the card out of the envelope!

The finished card, which of course our guests will hang for all to see:

We were super pleased with the results of our rush job, and have since found other ways to integrate our engagement photos into our wedding day. Are you using save the dates? Did you have to adjust your timing based on feedback from your guests?

I also sent out our Save the Dates just under a year out for the same reason! All of my fiance’s family is in another state and I wanted to afford them as much time as possible to save money and request vacation time! Also, our wedding is Labor Day weekend- so I wanted to give everyone a heads up not to make other holiday plans!

I felt momentarily guilty about sending out my save the dates for a July 2011 wedding back in August. However, the reasoning I had was 80% of our guest list is from out of town (both national and international) and our wedding is in the middle of summer vacation season and I figured people with kids (as most of our friends are) might need some time to plan. From my own experience, I tend to plan for vacations well in advanced so hoped they appreciated the heads up.

Your save-the-dates look super cute even if they didn’t end up incorporating your engagement photos.

I love these. We decided not to incorporate our engagement photos for simplicity and not wanting to have our faces plastered everywhere as photos are already on the website and the BIG day already revolves around us. We thought we gift our guests a break. ;)

We did the same thing. I am also from MICHIGAN! Im a July bride but currently live in Florida with my fiance and most of his family is from here, his father lives in Cali and his fraternity brothers and my sisters live all over the U.S. We had to do the same thing. Ended up working on them through July-Sept and mailed them in Sept but we made sure to do e-pics early. Engaged April, pics in June Save the dates on in September. It’s been sorta rushed or I feel way early but too many people are coming from out of town. Guests mostly family were already asking about hotel reservations and any discounts back in November!!! Im not quite that far ahead lol They look AMAZING though!!! Congrats on your May nuptials <3

We sent ours out around New Years so that people would get them when they bought new 2011 calendars. Our wedding is 90% out of towners and it’s right after Labor Day, so we want to make sure that people are able to take the time right after a long weekend.

We sent ours at 6 months out, although all the family already knew the wedding date, thanks to our mums. :) We just wanted to send them stuff!

I think save the dates that are sent out a year in advance or asap in the case of a wedding that will happen in less than a year… My family vacation plans are set at least a year in advance… since we rent a cottage at the beach and try to rent it the same week each year it’s just normal for us to have that preplanned as an annual event…I think that in the case of a destination wedding… it would make sense that actual invitations were sent at the four to six month point …

So cute! Hopefully the guests will open the envelopes properly… although if I got an envelope that nice I certainly would. Hope that’s consolation!

@Miss Bacon: That’s a brilliant idea!
@Wehaf: Yes, you’ll see some of the design elements again. ;)
@Miss Fish: I was a devout envelope-side opener until we started planning our own wedding. Now I always try to open at the point when I get an invitation!
@Mrs.Kennedy: These were DiY, but I will remember to share info in another post!
