Compromising Registries

January 15th, 2011 @ 5:40 pm by Miss Oatmeal

Today I’m going to talk about something that gets me pretty excited, and I can’t be the only one out there: gift registries! Mr. Oatmeal and I have decided to do this in a pretty traditional way by registering for the things needed to start our home and lives together. Have I mentioned that we just bought a house? More details on that later!

Anyhow, we’ve narrowed down our registries to two places: Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn. I understand that these are fairly common choices, so I want to talk more about Mr. Oatmeal. He says these registries are for me, and me only. I’m the only one who will be happy to receive products from these stores, and he doesn’t think that’s very fair. And guess what? I agree. I know Mr. Oatmeal. I know him so well. And he won’t have the same warm fuzzy feeling inside when opening up, let’s say, this little gem:

Or, maybe this.

I could go on and on, but I’ll spare you.

So we’ve come to what we think is a great compromise. We’re still going to register at both stores mentioned above for home and kitchen goodies. But we’re also adding Sears into the mix! You see, Mr. Oatmeal is a guys’ guy. He likes all things manly, and even if he doesn’t know how to fix something, he sure as hell will figure it out. I love that about him. So our Sears registry will help him build a collection of tools he’ll likely keep forever.

Win-win-win. Don’t ya think?

Are you registering for gifts? If so, how did you choose where? Did you throw something new into the mix, too?

We did a guys registry too! We ended up registering at Home Depot but it wasn’t very convenient for most people because they didn’t have an on-line registry. I wish I would have thought of Sears…. maybe we would have gotten our dream grill….oh well.

We registered at Sears also and put all sorts of tools and camping gear on there for my husband. We didnt get not ONE single guy thing. In my opinion, people simply arent used to buying things like that for a wedding gift, :( I wanted the camping gear also, but instead we got a lot of things that we already had in our set up home and ended up returning and getting gift cards. Good luck though.

However, he registered for a couple of culinary gadgets and he got all of them!

We just registered today at Bed Bath and Beyond are are going to do a registry on amazon.com for all the “guy” things. We wanted to do Home Depot but their registry seems like it would be a hassle. I like how Amazon has the universal registry so you can add things from ALL sites!

Most people go with bed bath and beyond, macys, pottery barn, williams sonoma. So the guys often get a little left out. My fiance was good about letting us mix it up with a few different board games and other things online, but for the most part it was still mostly for her.

We created Registry Stop to make it easier for a variety of stores. Very similar to Amazon’s universal registry, but we also integrate with in store registries, in particular Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn so the non-internet savvy guests aren’t left out.

We are registering at Target because we both LOVE target!

I love your idea about him registering at Sears for “guy” stuff. Here’s hoping he gets some of his fav items as gifts!

I love the idea at registering at sears too. Mr. Lewi and I have been living together in a small apt for 4 yrs so we already have all the kitchen stuff, but we would love to own a house one day! Mr. Lewi would love to be the man of the house and fix stuff! I tried to register at sears, but it caused a war with my family. My mom said they wont pay for a bridal shower if he is going to get gifts too!!!

Did you register for a salt pig?? How would I use that? We’re registering at C&B, BBB and a Honeymoon site, but luckily, Mr. Bacon likes to cook as much as he likes to eat :)

I’m pretty sure that I gave Mr. Q’s cousin that exact salt box as a wedding gift. Hope you and Mr. Oatmeal both get gifts to use and enjoy!

We registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond and MyRegistry.com, which is like a universal registry. Though about 80 percent of the stuff is “for me,” we were able to put some stuff on there for him…some tools, 2 beach folding chair with his NFL team’s logo, some wine stuff, etc.

Ha, ha, ha. My husband and I are both total foodies and love to entertain. He was equally excited about registering for china and crystal and it was my husband that persuaded me to register for silver (which we got all 12 place settings of and some interesting items, like a strawberry fork and pickle fork). We registered at Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Belk’s, Crate and Barrel and a charity registry. We registered at three department stores to be fair to our guests, who might not have the store we shop at (Macy’s) by their home.

We totally would have registered for tools, but we don’t have a house yet, and there’s no way we could store all that stuff! Nice tools are expensive, so it’s nice you guys are going to be able to start a collection now.

The tools may be less typical registry items, but their perfect for what registries are all about - making a comfortable, personal marital home. How lucky that your man has the crafty skills to do home maintenance and building projects on his own!

I think that’s a great idea. I’ll have to really sit down and discuss our registry options. I know he’ll have a big option about this kind of stuff.

@Miss Bacon: Yes! I don’t really know, I just love the way it looked and felt in person. Aaaaannnd, if I’m being honest here, Tyler Florence has the exact one on his show = I.must.have.it.
