Mrs. Bacon, Chicago Age and Occupation: 26, Digital Advertising Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, IT Client Services Engagement Date: June 17, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Ravenswood Billboard Factory About Me: I'm a Midwestern girl that can't seem to commit to staying in one place for too long and is constantly daydreaming about my next adventure. I am an aspiring foodie with a weak spot for the unusual and I love semi-reality food television. My other loves easily include laughing as a form of exercise, a book that I can't put down, summer baseball games, espresso with whipped cream, couch potato days and nights with the ridiculous Mr. Bacon, and our two kitties, Lincoln and Sawyer. We're planning a faux-destination wedding for 150 of our closest friends and family in the city we've both adopted as home that has a modern, yet whimsical twist and as many personal touches as we can manage.

Finding the One

January 16th, 2011 @ 1:40 pm by Mrs. Bacon

Since I was first having wedding thoughts months ago, I fell in love with two phenomenal and iconic Chicago locations: Cafe Brauer in Lincoln Park and the Chicago Room at the Chicago History Museum. Our wedding is pretty much a destination wedding…well, for everyone other than us. So finding a place that was uniquely Chicago was at the top of our list. Unfortunately, Cafe Brauer and the Chicago History Museum were both at the top of our budget, but check them out—they’re kinda worth it.

I love everything about Cafe Brauer: the beams, the stained glass windows, the majestic location smack dab in the center of Lincoln Park…oh, swoon. So it’s amazing and one of my favorite buildings on the north side of town, but is it us?

So on to the Chicago History Museum. I love the idea of this place. It’s perfect: 100% focused on Chicago, Frank Lloyd Wright windows hanging on the walls, a great location in the city, and we could even be married out in the park with the festivities inside. To top it off, when I went to check out the space, Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson were participating in a wedding rehearsal! What could be better?

But are either of these options us? More importantly, is a fabulous location worth skimping in other areas, like food or decor? Ultimately, no. So we kept looking. In under a month I called 14 venues, only to find that eight of them were already booked on our wedding date (15 months away!) and most of them were at the top of our budget or simply not us. We checked out hotel after hotel and even considered a dinner cruise before stumbling on The One.

The Ravenswood Billboard Factory is The One; it’s a billboard factory that was restored a few years back to be an open event space for everything from weddings to benefits.

The top floor is airy and modern with exposed brick walls and huge picture windows that look out over the El and the neighborhood, while the second floor is more intimate with the same loft feel and plenty of character. Not to mention, the main floor is a garage-turned-event-space where the owner keeps his personal collection of vintage cars (talk about a photo op!) and a smattering of restored neon signs. We pretty much walked in, saw the space, and fell in love. We left beaming and excited to meet with the in-house caterer to talk food the next week. It took us just over a month and meetings with 14 venues, but it was all worth it to find the perfect space for us.

How long did it take to find your venue?

What a fantastic locale! Your wedding should definitely have a neat vibe to it. We are doing a destination wedding and while we knew we wanted the Scottish Highlands for the beautiful and dramatic scenery as well as the ease of country hopping, we didn’t have an exact location in mind (at least not one in our price range). Somehow though we found a castle at a fantastic rate. Not what we would have ever expected, but now we can’t wait :)

WOW! I love “THE ONE”! Sounds like it’ll be a perfect fit for you and your FI!

Chicago is such a great town and offers many choices…I know I would be overwhelmed in choosing! Your pics are gonna be FABULOUS!
Congrats!

I love the idea of photo ops with the vintage cars- that’s on the wish list after a pony for me and a pasture puff/trail buddy for FH.

We took zero time picking our location, we picked it a year before we got engaged even. We’ve danced there for years and the organizers loooooover us (as in there was a race to volunteer to work our wedding.)

I’m so excited to follow your wedding planning! We live in Chicago but are getting married in my hometown. I keep thinking of all these fun Chicago details we could add if we were getting married here! Best wishes!

I love your venue!! The light through the windows is just amazing, can’t wait to see more pictures in your planning.
Right now I’m trying to find a venue for my wedding in the Albany, New York area. There are some beautiful places but I’m just not 100% that they’re “us”. It’s been a month of being engaged and we’re planning a May 2012 wedding so I know we’ll find a place soon. I wish we had something like that here!

What a great venue! It really does have a great vibe to it, and sounds like you don’t need to invest in any props since you’ve got everything already there!!

@eleroo02: I always wanted to get married in a castle in the UK! Sadly, the budget and family passports inhibited us. Good luck with all your planning!

@Kate: I’d love to hear any Chicago style ideas you have! We are trying to give the wedding a Chicago feel, too :)

@Kaitlin: You guys have plenty of time! Check out as many places as you need to find one that feels right for you.

Your venue is awesome. Loving the gleaming hardwoods and huge window.

Our search seemed to take forever! Right as we began the venue search, the Northeast got smacked with all those early 2010 snowstorms. We couldn’t drive out of the city, let alone see the ground between January and March. I was anxious our unknown future venue would book up before we had a chance to see it.

I think we visited 10 venues before lucking onto our place.

It took my fiance and I forEVER to find a venue. We too wanted to go with downtown Chicago, it just was not in our budget no matter how hard we pretended. Our first, beautiful choice in Chicago was Prairie Productions http://www.prairieproduction.net/ Its gorgeous! And actually not that bad considering its in Chicago. But we ended up saving a bundle by doing the NWI route at Centennial Park. There’s no link for this one because there are hardly any pictures of it online (perhaps why it was so cheap!). At any rate, I’d say it took us six - seven months… Augh… Lol
