About Mrs. Eggs Benedict

I Hate Trends

January 16th, 2011 @ 4:00 pm by Mrs. Eggs Benedict

But not for the reason you may think. I hate when things become trendy because then it means they become expensive! Case in point—cupcakes. I love cupcakes. A few years ago, as I was watching my friends get married and wondering what I might do someday for my own wedding, I thought cupcakes would be awesome. Cute, easy, no cutting fee: what could go wrong? Oh, right. Everyone else thought they’d be great, too! And now they’re all over the place, which means that bakeries can charge out the wazoo for these little guys. So, no cupcakes. I’ll just keep making them myself when I need a fix.

So. What does that leave for us in the cake department? Well, there’s always, you know—cake. Which I would happily devour. I love cake. Love. It. However, know something else I don’t like? Yeah, how much fondant and fancy decorations on said cake cost. (I’m really not that cheap despite all evidence to the contrary. I know that there are some fabulous bakers out there and I love what they do, I just have a really hard time with some of those prices for something that is supposed to end up in my belly. I mean, yeah, I’ll pay for a fantastic dinner out now and then, but somehow that’s different. No, I can’t explain how, but I’ll work on it.) Ahem. Anyway. Moving on. These are some examples of cakes that I like. (And if you can’t already tell with me, they’re all more on the simple and classic end—that’s just how I roll.)

But—what if we don’t do a tiered cake? What if we do a cake buffet? And yes, I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that’s also a trend, and I know it is. But as far as I can tell, this one isn’t quite as big as cupcakes, and hopefully that also means it’s not quite as expensive. Obviously I haven’t done extensive research yet. But I will. Oh boy, I can’t wait to do the research that finding our cake baker will entail!

But back to the cake buffet. One of my good friends did a cake buffet at her wedding. And it was awesome. And it was actually a really good way of being able to easily have desserts that were dairy and gluten (and taste?—ha, just kidding) free. Which would definitely be a good thing for me, as I have several friends who have special food issues, and if possible I would like to accommodate them so that they can eat cake, too.

So is it OK to do a not-quite-overdone trend?

It’s okay to do even an overdone trend if that’s what you like. A trend is just a bunch of people recognizing the awesomeness of the same thing.

We are also doing a cake bar. I saw it in a magazine, loved how it looked, and I am so excited that when we taste cakes for the wedding, we don’t have to choose just one or two flavors. Anything we like can go on the table!

I came armed with the third picture when I met with my baker. I adore it. Soooo pretty.

However, I can also appreciate a cake bar. It saves money, while looking adorable and allowing your guests multiple flavors of delicious cake. Plus, like trendy cupcakes, easier to cut!

I have all three of those cakes saved on my computer as inspiration photos! Ultimately, we decided on the first photo, but it will be FIVE tiers high! And since we’re not a fan of fondant, we are having it frosted with buttercream with nice texture, which I think will make it look even more delicious!! I can’t wait to see how it comes out!

A cake bar can be really fun too, though. A friend of mine had cake centerpieces on beautiful cake stands for her wedding, which was a lot of fun!

The first cake was our inspiration picture too. Ended up being $300 for 120 slices, just FYI.

First cake is very pretty, like something more unusual thoough. I went with a cake made to look like the church we got married in, was good as it was a small wedding so was not a huge wedding cake. Great to have a nice cake though, everyone always remembers the cake.

I LOVE your idea! There are SO many flavors and types of cakes to choose from. YUMMY!Happy cake tasting and planning!

We are having a small wedding with guest sitting with us at one LONG table. Our cake will be in front of us on a cake stand and the other small cakes will be placed on the table near guests.

Instead of cupcakes (they were a small fortune!) I’m going to do a grooms cake of doughnuts for my doughnut-loving fiance from Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, OR.
I figure getting 150 for a wedding of 75 plus a traditional cake will satisfy even the most sugar-crazed of my guests.

Silly me, but what is a cake bar?? Anyone have any pictures? LOL, I kind of can picture what I think it is, but I’m not sure!

The cake cutting ceremony at the reception is a tradition which symbolises the first task as husband and wife perform together. So I guess whatever way they choose, cake, cupckaes or even the cake buffet (which I love the idea of) as long as it tastes good and is within your budget.

I haven’t myself experienced a cake buffet at a wedding but as you said if it’s a trend coming through I’m sure to experience it :-) Thanks for an awesome article!

Embarrassing, but…I had no idea that a cake buffet was a thing. I just couldn’t decide and told the baker we would just get a bunch of cakes and let people choose, haha. So I was flabbergasted that it was cheaper! I thought it would be more expensive.

I love the idea of a cake buffet. Or a dessert buffet because……..well I don’t like cake. (I know I know) But HE wants a cake. We’ll probably do Tiramisu.

I hate trends too and tried to avoid them as much as I could, but I LOVE cupcakes. I loved cupcakes before they were trendy, and my fiance actually proposed to me on cupcakes, so I felt like cupcakes were a more personal choice for us. And, even better, I actually found that cupcakes were WAY cheaper than cake slices! The bakery I think we’ll be going with has cupcakes for only $1.60 each… $400 for 250 cupcakes, plus a cutting cake on top for $45. Pretty awesome deal for something I love :) Oh and the first photo is also one of my inspirations for the cutting cake!

I love the idea that a cake/dessert buffet would help to accomodate more friends and family with food issues. Then again, that first picture - gorgeous. I think we have somewhat similar taste, since I’m always swooning over your inspiration pictures.

We’re having cupcakes, but we’re making them ourselves to cut down costs. We’re hiring a cupcake stand and buying cupcake wrappers to make them pretty. We’re only planning on making around 100 cupcakes so fingers crossed it isn’t too stressful!! Thankfully my Mum is a great baker, and I’m currently practising my baking different flavours every few weeks, they’re turning out pretty well too! Just an idea.

I LOVE tiramisu. But I know not everyone who will be at my wedding will. So we are doing the cupcake thing (b/c there’s not cutting involved) and then we are having tiramisu as our cake topper to cut together. We’ll also have some extra tiramisu made for our guests as well.

I, too, have never heard of a cake bar. Sounds cute!

I’m doing cupcakes for my wedding. I actually didn’t even realize that they were the in thing until I had already booked my baker and I started seeing them everywhere. Trend or not, its about what you want and feel comfortable spending. I love the cake buffet idea!
