Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Invitations? Done. And Done.

January 17th, 2011 @ 12:06 pm by Mrs. Hippo

I never thought this day would come. OK…no…it’s not quite wedding day, but it’s mailing the invitations day! And after printing and cutting and gluing and stuffing for the last four months, getting these bad boys out in the mail is cause for some serious celebration. Aren’t they purdy?!???

OK…

So, I know I’m not showing you much, but I want to give my good friends at the Post Office (*insert eye roll*) a few days to get them into the hands of our guests before I give you a full reveal. While we’re waiting though, I thought I’d share some things I learned during the whole process for those of you that are considering going the DIY route. Here goes:

  1. Slow and steady wins the race. The DIY route for invitations (particularly if they are multi-layered with several inserts like ours) takes a ton of time. The only reason I didn’t go insane was ’cause I did a little at a time over the course of several months. I printed the main invitation one weekend, inserts one weekend, envelope liners one weekend, belly bands another weekend, addressing envelopes another weekend…OK, you get it. My point is, it’s super time consuming, and trying to do a ton at once could be overwhelming. Knocking out a little bit at a time is definitely the way to go.
  2. Think about the hidden costs. My main reason for DIY invitations was so that we could get really cute invitations for about half the cost of paying someone else to do them. Well, I think our invitations are really cute, but I don’t know that they were half the cost. I didn’t think about the extra things like adhesives, a new paper trimmer (’cause the one I had was a little crappy), additional paper stock (’cause I screwed up some of the printing), and more adhesives (’cause it took a lot of adhesive to stick everything together) when I originally decided to DIY. Those costs definitely add up.
  3. Don’t DIY if you don’t like to DIY. Even though our invitations took a ton of time, they were truly a labor of love. OK, I know that phrase is so overused, but it’s true! I never dreaded working on our invitations, and I even (dare I say) enjoyed working on them. I’m so happy that I DIYed our invitations, but if the whole creative process of figuring out what you want the invitations to look like and then printing, cutting, gluing and assembling them doesn’t sound appealing…don’t do it! There are amazingly beautiful invitations out there for sale, and tons of talented people that will do it all for you if you want.

What other things did you learn from DIYing your invitations?

Oh Ms. Hippo! I’ve been waiting for your invites for forever!! (Okay, only for a few months since you first started blogging but really, who is counting?) Anyhow, I can’t wait to see the final reveal. I must say that you are the reason I have a bunch of sample paper for paper and more and paper source etc. I love your blue metallic shimmer envelop. I’m know the final reveal will be awesome :)

I would love to hear what pen or type of ink you used to make the white so clear on the blue envelopes! That is exactly what I am about to attempt on our invitation envelopes. Thanks!

@ashleyryan: The ink looks pretty white in the picture, but it’s actually a metallic silver. It’s a Uniball “Gel Impact” pen in silver that I got at Michael’s. It worked great!

I chose to DIY our invitations in order to save some money and could probably have gone with custom letterpress for what I spent on the Gocco, paper, paper cutter, embossing materials, stamps, etc., but I have enjoyed every one of the approximately 12,000 minutes that I have spent working on them! I think that this post is really great for people thinking about going the DIY route.

I’m so glad you brought up point #3. I feel so many people feel pressured to create their own invites at the cost of their sanity. Not everyone is craft oriented and it’s OKAY! No one is going to judge them! It doesn’t mean they don’t care about their wedding any less! But enough ranting, can’t wait to see the final result!

Can’t wait to see your invites!!! One of the things that I learned through DIYing our invites was that people really did appreciate the hard work.

These are all great tips. We tried to do too much, too fast. I think we did the whole process in a month and it was very stressful, especially with surprise expenses popping up everywhere. I am excited to see your invites! Reveal, reveal, reveal!

I am really looking fireward to see how they turned out. I’m just in the gluing together part of mine and i started on them back in 2009 (ordered the pocketfolds one month after we got engaged) and have done a little here and a little there over the last two years.. SO glad i’m almost at the post them out date!

One tip for other DIY brides: If you live in Norway (or an other country like it) and decide to do your invites DIY style remember the hidden cost of taxes on shipped items (we don’t have any good shops like cards & pockets here so i had to get everything shipped from the US to Norway). They ended up costing me more than my wedding dress (wich i bought on ebay for a bargain, but still).

I’ll post my own invites when i get them ready for a photoshoot..
