The Dress I Want(ed)

January 17th, 2011 @ 3:58 pm by Miss Oatmeal

Don’t get excited…I’m not posting my dress on here. I love and appreciate you all following along with my crazy ramblings, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to show y’all my dress before the wedding. No hard feelings, right?

With that said, I’m going to touch on something almost every person told me prior to dress shopping: “Oh, I ended up choosing a dress that was completely different than the one I thought I wanted.”

Sound familiar, brides?

When I started looking online, there seemed to be a theme to nearly every dress I gravitated to: soft with flowy movement, graceful, somewhat unique. This dress I found ages ago, and it was my inspiration going into dress shopping:

I hung on to the thought of having that dress for months. It was to the point of researching how to get it custom made in ivory. Actually, Bridesmaid Leslie whipped up a quick illustration of what she thought the back would look like, in case I needed to show a seamstress:

Obviously, I didn’t go that route. But do you see what I mean? It’s so dreamy!

{I loved the dramatic back on this dress, even though I’d never seen the front. I ended up finding out that this was custom made.}

Oh, that dress is so pretty and feminine. It was unfortunately out of the question due to budget.

{Carolina Herrera really got me with this one. Again, why even try something on I can’t afford?}

I was clearly not going for a strapless dress, and I don’t even think I tried a single one on. I’ll vaguely describe what I ended up with: a strapped dress (currently a V-neck, but I’m having the entire neckline and back altered), not flowy, not soft. But do I love it? Absolutely. I’ve tried it on several times since purchasing it, and I love it the same, if not more, each time.

Did you get the dress you’d always envisioned? Or, like me, did you end up going with something so opposite?

Wow, those are some gorgeous, flow-y, delicate dresses! I was dead set on a mermaid but once I had one on, I couldn’t stop thinking about the empire waist I had tried on just before it. Funny how that works! Out of all of these teasers you are throwing out, I think I want to see your dress the most! :)

Same here! I always thought I’d get a lovely soft lace dress. The epitome of romance and vintage. I instead ended up in one that my friend I was with had forced on me. It’s all modern ruching and ruffled tiers. It’s still kind of a shock what I ended up with :) but in a good way.

Pretty dresses… have to say though, you’re not showing your dress or your venue? Pretty disappointing from a blogging perspective!

@Kate: Have to admit this was my first thought too. I even scrolled over the icon at the top to make sure this was the same Bee who wasn’t sharing her venue.

That yellow dress is A-MAZING!
I was conviced I’d end up in a tea-length vintage dress with a crinoline - definitely not what I ended up with!

I agree with PPs: It’s extremely disappointing that as a wedding blogger, you’ve chosen to keep two of the biggest details of the day a secret. It’s hard for me to become invested in your planning process if everything is kept a secret until after the wedding!

I wish we could see your dress and your venue. It’s hard to follow you as a blogger when you won’t share the details. Why blog if you refuse to share details? We aren’t attending your wedding…

I had two ideas of what I wanted- complete lace dress with cap sleeves and a jacket - or something super flowy and light- not train. I went completely different with a more traditional a-line with a long train. You never know what you’ll end up with. Can’t wait to see your dress in the re-caps! :)

@anastasia: Yes! Isn’t it gorgeous?! It’s Grace by Amy Michelson. Good luck on your search!
@Lauren: @Lilacgal: @KSqd: @kcroxyoursox: @Kate: I’m so sorry if I’ve disappointed you, ladies. It’s simply a personal decision as most of my guest follow me here on the ‘bee. I’ll be so sad if you stop following because of this, but will completely understand nonetheless. I plan on giving many more sneak peeks in the future, so please stay tuned :)

My dress search was such a yin-yang experience, too! I struggled a bit with the decision, but like you ended up with a dress that I still adore to this day. :) So looking forward to seeing what you chose in the recaps!

I totally respect your decision, but also find it funny that you wanted and chose to be a wedding blogger if you aren’t up to sharing the details of your wedding. No hard feelings of course, but you have become in my mind the “non sharing” bee

I LOVE the back of the dress in the third photo! Your style is so pretty. I can’t wait to see the actual dress you chose even if it’s different from what you thought you would choose.

I fell in love with my dress about a year before we even got engaged! He came home from work one day with a local newspaper that had a picture of my dress as the advertisement for a local shop and said “this is pretty.” After he proposed I went home to FL and my mother wanted to go dress shopping. It was the first one I tried on and we ordered it that day!! I’ve heard about not buying the first dress and not buying any dress within the first month of your engagement, but I’ve been in love with it for so long I don’t care!

@anastasia: It’s Grace by Amy Michelson. I’m getting married in a Grace size 6 next week and might be willing to sell it afterwards…
