Why a Winter Wedding?

January 17th, 2011 @ 5:38 pm by Mrs. Eggs Benedict

I haven’t really talked about why we decided to get married in February. It’s actually pretty simple—both of us knew right away that we didn’t want to get married in the summer. Mr. EB hates the heat; his perfect days are those where there’s some cloud cover and it’s 75 degrees out with a bit of a breeze. I prefer it a bit warmer than that, but would hate to end up with a 95-degree wedding day. (That can definitely happen in the summer in the Northwest—of course, you can also just as easily end up with 65 degrees and raining. It really is a total crapshoot what you’ll end up with.) Also, no one I knew had gotten married in the winter, and I loved the idea of doing something a bit different. Plus, growing up I always told my mom that I was going to have a winter wedding. She didn’t really believe me until we were sitting down with the venue coordinator trying to pick a date.

As for February, that choice came because of when the venue had available dates. We got engaged in December of 2009, but we didn’t see IslandWood until March of 2010. By that time we had ruled out November since one of Mr. EB’s cousins got married at the beginning of that month. We decided we didn’t want to do anything close to Thanksgiving, and then the whole month of December gets taken up with family and holiday obligations. Then it’s January and NFL playoffs. (Yes, that really was a factor in determining our date.) So that moved us to February. I think IslandWood was available two weekends. A quick check determined that the Super Bowl was on one of those weekends, so our wedding was set for the other! Unfortunately, that Saturday also happens to be two of my bridesmaids’ birthdays. The day after is another good friend’s birthday, and the day after that is yet another friend’s birthday. I’m pretty sure there are some other birthdays that I’m blanking on right now but, needless to say, the weekend that worked the best for us was a busy birthday weekend! I actually asked my two girls to make sure that they were OK with it. They both said of course (one is determined not to ever grow older, so she’s happy to be distracted on her birthday!), so we finally had our date!

I have to say, we have gotten a little bit of flak for picking a wedding date in the middle of February. Most people are asking why on Earth we would want to get married in the Northwest in the middle of the rainy season. Well—my only answer to that is that it’s what we wanted to do! And more importantly, we’re all expecting that it will be pouring the entire weekend, so if it does anything else we’ll all be super excited! Unlike if we had planned a summer wedding where we planned to have the gorgeous Northwest summer and had to deal with showers instead. And really? Winter weddings just make me happy.

What’s your ideal season for weddings?

I would have loved to have a fall wedding - I’m in New England, and I just adore fall around here. I love fall colors too - reds, cranberries, burgundies, sigh. I also love the cool crisp air. But, being an academic, the fall is just not an ideal time to have a wedding. So, a June wedding it is for me. But I also love the idea of winter weddings, although I’ve never been to one.

My favorite season by far is spring, which is why we’re getting married in May. Everything about the season is perfection. :)

Finally someone else!! We are getting married at the end of January in the Northeast and we have gotten a lot of flak for it. When everyone gasps, but what if it snows?!?! I tell them that is what I am hoping for! Our venue is a seasonal hotel that will open just for our wedding so we will have the place to ourselves. Plus, we have gotten some great deals with vendors for booking in the off-season. Winter is the way to go!

Not enough people get married in the winter. I think it’s a romantic time, fantastic for pictures.

We got married on NYE in Seattle. :) Never wanted a summer wedding either…I wanted a dark candlelight affair. We lucked out weather wise though–it sure was cold but it was as sunny as a summer day for our pre-ceremony photos.

You’re absolutely right… The weather loses it’s power to affect your day, really, when you move outside summer! Our weather has gone all weird here the last couple years, so we decided to just pick a date that worked for us and if the sun shines, that’s a bonus!

We’re getting married on one of my bridesmaid’s birthdays too since that was the only Saturday in September that was available at our venue. Fortunately, when I checked with her she said that she didn’t mind at all and that it sounded like a fun birthday. I think I might have a small birthday cake or cupcake for her the day of the wedding. I’d like to do something for her, although I’m not exactly sure what yet.

We got married on my grandfather’s birthday (which is also my grandmother and his wedding anniversary… she picked it so he would never forget their anniversary). We had a big birthday cake wheeled out and had everyone sing happy birthday to him and then presented them with my bouquet to honor their 51 years of marriage.

Ideally I would have loved to get married in late October/early November but because of my husband’s schedule with the army we married in May.

I’m a February bride as well. My mom kept asking, “But WHY? It’s going to be miserable weather!” But FI and I love the winter, our first date was in February almost three years ago, and frankly, it’s nice to have something to celebrate after all the excitement of the holiday season has petered out.

I’m really loving the idea of a winter wedding too, my s.o. also hates really warm weather! And I grew up in Western NY so I love snow and I always will. A winter wedding seems to be more “us” I think. Besides, you know you’re wedding will be a little more unique because of the season!

I adore winter weddings. They’re so snuggly! And, I also love the rain. It’s peaceful and incredibly romantic.

Sort of love that you needed to think about the Playoffs and the Superbowl =)

Neither of us wanted a summer or hot weather wedding as well. I’ve always dreamed of a winter wedding - pictures out in the snow always look so amazing! New Years Eve happens to fall on a Sat this year so it was perfect for us. Most ppl think the date and season is a neat idea / nice change but there are always a few that are going to wrinkle their noses at it!

@Mrs. Champagne: Thanks for pointing that out! I’ll get Pengy to fix it :). And your wedding was one of the ones that I showed to my mom so she could see just how gorgeous winter weddings are!
