Revisiting the Cake Toppers

January 18th, 2011 @ 8:37 am by Miss Oatmeal

I wrote a little while back about cake toppers, and it seems that I wasn’t the only one pondering what we were going to put on top of our cake.

Let me give you some background information here. Our good friends, Bridesmaid K and Groomsman N, are both in our wedding party. They’ve been married for over five years and have two of the most precious little twins I’ve ever seen. They are truly our closest friends as a couple. We love them, spend all sorts of time with them, and we’re going to live 0.2 miles away from them when we move into our house. We couldn’t be happier about these two.

With that said, this groomsman likes to joke around quite a bit. He’d been saying (for months, mind you) that he had a gift for Mr. Oatmeal that he just couldn’t wait to give him. So the other day we were hanging out at their house, when he hands Mr. Oats a gift. Upon opening said gift, this is revealed.

HA oh my gosh, this is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Lie.

OK, I was cautiously laughing. But really, if I looked anything like the bride up there, I’d hope Mr. Oatmeal was reluctant. I’d be worried if he weren’t.

So we all had a good laugh, Nate loved that I wrote an entire post about cake toppers without knowing about this gift, and I vowed to never use this at our wedding. I did, however, offer to use it at our rehearsal dinner. It seems like a good idea.

Did you get any funny gifts in the months leading up to your wedding? Or have you ever given a gag gift like this?

We used that exact topper at our rehearsal too, I let hubby and his mom plan the whole thing and reluctantly painted the grooms tuxedo camo for him. Haha

Um, I actually don’t think it’s funny. Like at all. I think it embodies some of the worst stereotypes about men and women relative to marriage. But that’s just me.

when FI and i started talking about getting married i put my foot down on those jokes the first day. i hate them, the grooms that are being dragged, locked up or completly non caring about the wedding. makes me sick. so we were looking at bridal party shirts for the rehersal and came across the “game over” groom shirt…ya no…not happening, he was like thats kinda funny and i swear if my eyes had lasers he wouldnt need a hair cut for a year! i hate those things. they are tacky and rude and if the groom wants it so bad then he can take it to his own house and have a whole new life. it shouldnt be a matter of forcing him to get married. he should want it. he asked you (or he said yes whichever)

@Danielle: @Danielle:

I agree with you one hundred percent and many a rant in the aisle of Michael’s has been heard because if it. It furtheres so many disturbing stereotpes that I can’t giggle at it…even if that makes me feel kinda like a wet blanket

My cousin at this cake topper at her wedding. I thought it was funny but it’s not a topper I would want for my wedding cake.

@cr6zy: Someone actually wore the game over t shirt to our wedding!! A cousin of Mr. H that I’d never met. I didn’t say a word to him.

@oatmeal: I think it’s a nice compromise to use the somewhat self-deprecating humor during the rehearsal dinner and keep it out of the wedding itself - a perfect solution!

I’m not sure I’d use that cake topper at the real thing, but I think it’s pretty funny for the rehearsal. We’re weird though and said from the very beginning that we can’t be a couple that says “I love you more” because we are both committed, and are excited about the wedding.
