Dressing Up the Men

January 18th, 2011 @ 5:04 pm by Mrs. French Toast

Whenever an awards show is on TV, Mr. French Toast and I play a game of “See -who-can yell-out-the-celebrity’s-name-the-fastest.” So if the camera panned to Julianne Moore, I’d yell out “Julianne Moore!” and give Mr. French Toast a smirk because I beat him to it.

However, last night while watching the Golden Globes, we played a game of “See-who-can identify-what-kind-of-tuxedo-the-men-are-wearing.” We had our eyes glued on the men to scope out the latest trends for 2011, because Mr. French Toast will soon have an important decision to make:

Bow tie?

or necktie?

Last weekend we went to Black Tie Tuxedos in San Francisco so Mr. French Toast could try on some tuxedos. Just when I thought wedding gown shopping was overwhelming with terms like a-line, mermaid, trumpet, princess, etc…I added a few more words to my vocabulary last weekend.

A tuxedo is differentiated by the style of the lapel—the silk/satin lining of the coat. There are essentially 3 types of lapels:

A broad V-shaped lapel that points up and out just below the collar line.

A triangular indentation is cut where the lapel joins the collar.

A smooth, rounded edge lapel.

Just when we our lapels sorted out, we then had to decide: necktie or bow tie? Vest or commerbund? Wingtip or laydown collar? Studs or buttons? Cufflinks? Needless to say, it was an very educational afternoon for the both of us.

So then as I was watching the Golden Globes, I could point to Chris Colfer on screen and yell, “Single-button-peak-lapel-laydown-collar-with-skinny-necktie!” and throw my winning smirk at Mr. French Toast. (By the way, did anyone else besides me tear up after his winning speech?)

I TOTALLY teared up during his speech. I may have also emitted an unnecessarily loud “YES!” when they called his name. In front of my guy’s groomsmen. While I was the only girl in the house. After watching football all afternoon. Female fail.

I did the SAME thing! I was really curious what all the guys would wear, since Mr. Panther and I are in the midst of the great tuxedo hunt. Did you notice there were a TON of peak lapels?!

Mr Bacon has all kinds of opinions on tux vs suit, so I’m sure that we’re going to have quite an adventure once we finally step in to the menswear store. And, so much love for Chris! Totally deserved!
