Mrs. Panther, Atlanta GA/Westport CT Age and Occupation: 24, Web Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Music Recording Engineer Engagement Date: March 13, 2010 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: The Inn at Longshore About Me: I'm a total goofball who goes through life at a breakneck pace, trying not to knock anything over. I tend to fall in love with everything I encounter, but more than anything, I love my two little kitties, Bela and Josie, and my big kitty, Mr. Panther! As a wannabe crafter, I'm still waiting for my artistic talents to emerge. (Any day now, really.) In the meantime, I spend my days eating anything put in front of me, buying every pair of shoes I see and absorbing wedding inspiration from every inch of my surroundings. Making My Visions a Reality?

January 18th, 2011 @ 1:35 pm by Mrs. Panther

As my 12 days of sequestration draw to a close, I’m feeling unfortunately unaccomplished. I had really hoped to finish a project while I was stuck at home, and it just didn’t happen. And you know why? It’s because I’m insanely picky and won’t settle for anything less than the exact vision in my head. You guys saw it with my last post, about my inability to find the perfect footed bowl. I just can’t bring myself to settle for anything less than what I consider perfect, and it is KILLING me!

One of the projects that I deemed tackle-able for this week was table numbers. My original plan was to collect vintage bird and flower illustrations and name the tables after the featured image. But then I thought about the escort cards and how I would assign each couple or guest a table. I need to be able to fill in the table selections at the last minute, and realistically, the only easy way to do that would be to give the tables numbers and then use a number stamp on the escort cards. Is it exciting or original? No. But it’ll preserve my sanity, so it’ll just have to do.

When I thought about table numbers with actual numerals, this was the first thing that popped into my head:

Wooden numbers in picture frames are nothing new to the hive. Mrs. Lemonade used gorgeous gold numbers with tea-dyed fabric, and Mrs. Crab Cake recruited her adorable little lady to help paint hers. Inspired by their awesome results, and by some other fun ones I found online (here, here and here), I decided to make framed wooden numbers my new goal.

I figured I would start by finding wooden numbers. Most people had mentioned finding them at Michaels or Hobby Lobby, and I assumed I would, too. With visions of perfect numbers with beveled edges dancing in my head, I pulled on the ol’ Uggs (yes, really—DON’T JUDGE ME) and set out into the snow.

Here’s where the problems started. At my local Michaels, I only found flat, Comic Sans-type numbers. I really, really wanted those beveled edges, and clearly the goofy variety wasn’t going to work, so I moved on. The next-closest Michaels had more options. One set was 4″ tall with beveled edges, but they just looked too skinny and small. The next set up was 6″ tall, and they were HUGE. One number by itself probably would have fit in a 5″x7″ frame, but no way would I have fit a double-digit number. Hobby Lobby had no wooden numbers with beveled edges at all.

Bummed out, I decided to put the numbers on hold and look for backing fabric. Ideally, I wanted a mix of shimmery stripes (like our save the date envelope liners) and chinoiserie-style florals—all in our wedding colors, of course. I checked Hobby Lobby and Hancock Fabrics, and struck out. No shimmery stripes whatsoever, except in really thick upholstery fabric, and all the florals looked like they belonged on a nightgown. Sigh.

That evening, after a lot of Googling, I found this paper:

Isn’t it gorgeous? I came very close to buying it, but the problems were this: a) it’s back-ordered at least 3-4 weeks, b) it’s not actually our wedding colors, and c) I really, really wanted to use fabric. I closed the site and kept looking.

I finally found some viable floral options at fabric.com, and of course, immediately threw them into Photoshop to see how they would look with my imaginary frames (image borrowed from here), imaginary numbers (borrowed from here) and the linen colors I plan to use (royal blue overlay, lavender napkins). I also threw in some of my favorite flowers (flowers on the left from here and flowers on the right from here) and two of my mercury glass thingies.

Here’s option 1:

I like ‘em. I think I’ll probably pull the trigger and buy them, but I’m hesitant. Because we still have five and half months left, I’m afraid I’ll find something I like better. This has been my problem with completing projects thus for. The wedding still feels too far away! But I really do need to get some projects done, and if I’m going to do it, I need to loosen the iron grip on my vision just a teeny bit.

Of course, I still have to find numbers and frames. We looked at frames at Michaels and Hobby Lobby, and I didn’t see exactly what I wanted there, either. But I’m optimistic… they’ve got to be out there somewhere!

Does anyone else have trouble committing to something that isn’t exactly what you pictured?

You should check out this website:

It’s custom printed fabric. I’ve never actually bought anything from them but I’ve been toying with the idea for a while now.

@glamfish500: Oooh, that’s really interesting! The price is a little more than I’d like to spend, but that seems like a great resource for an Absolutely-Have-To-Have-It moment!

Have you checked out quilthome.com for fabrics? I’ve never bought anything from there, but they have a lot of patterned fabric in fun colors that might work. I really like the first fabric in your mockup.

That is exactly the look I wanted for my table numbers! I was so excited to DIY something, but I totally scrapped that project when I had similar issues finding the wooden numbers, and as I realized the whole project was going to cost way more than I wanted to spend. Oh well - hoping I can live vicariously through you!

You might find numbers that you like at a hardware store, like what they use for addresses on a house.

All 3 options look fabulous!! I am doing something similar with gold frames exactly like that one. I scoured the Marshall’s, Homegoods and TJ Maxxs in and around my city and found 30 frames extremely similar to that one (multiple styles but most in need of a paint job). Maybe you could try those stores if you have any near you.

I was going to suggest what Cara_Danielle said–try a Home Depot or Lowe’s. They have tons of beautiful numbers for mailboxes and front doors.

@sparks: I haven’t, but I’m definitely going to look now!
@ktmcculloch: Thanks, venue twin! :)

@eeper: It’s trickier than I thought it would be!
@Cara_Danielle, @azure6700: I’ve looked online, but haven’t made it to a store yet. It seems like a lot of them have holes in them (for screws or whatever), but I need to keep looking…
@Miss Dooders: That’s definitely next on my list! I hate that you can’t shop those stores online — it was killing me while I was stuck at home!

That’s my problem with projects…. it just seems to far away and if I start it now, will I find something I like better before the big day?

If it helps any the numbers I used in the ones you linked to above (I’m Dill Pickle Picnic) are the 4 inch beveled ones from Michaels. They actually look larger once you center them in the 5×7 frames…especially for the ones that are double digits. :)

I’m pretty sure I picked them up at the Northpoint location since it’s one of their larger stores in the ATL area.

@Sunlavender: Yeah! Such a pain!
@ggsb: Oh, HEY! Small blog-world! That’s so funny that you’re from this area! Yours are exactly what I want, so that’s awesome news. I went to the one at Perimeter, and they only had a couple of each number, so I should trek out to Northpoint. Thanks so much for the advice! :)

That’s exactly what I want to do for my table numbers too! I had seen a photo very similar to that one a while back, but somehow forgot to save it. I’ve been looking for it again to no avail… until now! So, thanks so much for posting. If you happen to find frames similar to the one in the inspiration pic, I’d love to know where you get them from, so I can hunt them down as well!

Great table number inspiration. I know you’ll pull it off 10 times as beautiful as the inspiration. Can’t wait to see the finished product!

I have that problem too. You just have to make sure you see every single thing there is out there before you buy something just so you know there really isn’t anything better in the whole wide world. Can be tiring indeed! But trust me, I’ve already reached my less-than-one-hundred-days line and at this point, anything goes! There’s just no time for perfection anymore. So if at this point you really think it is the best, just go for it. After you do, you’ll be so focused on some other project you won’t even remember to look back (and if you do, well you can always sell!).

OMG, yes! I got so hung up on having things EXACTLY how I pictured it. But that led to a lot of backed up projects the weeks before. For the record, I like option 1 and your overall vision is really pretty :) I hope this project works out for you!
