I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

More Bling For My Ring

January 18th, 2011 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Hippo

In addition to mailing out our wedding invitations (yay!), we checked another big task off of our to do list this weekend: ordering our wedding bands. Well, I take that back. We ordered two wedding bands, but they’re both for me!

After a brunch date with friends on Saturday, we headed to the jewelry store where King Hippo bought my engagement ring to order my wedding band. We knew exactly what we wanted, a thin micro pave band in the exact same width as my engagement ring. Easy peasy. The jeweler measured the thickness of my engagement ring to make sure that the band he would make was the exact same thickness, and then I tried on a couple of samples that he had on site, just to get a feel for how the band would look with my engagement ring. So fun! Here’s what I tried first:

Sorry the rings are a little blurry!

This band is the right thickness, but it’s a little too big so it doesn’t line up perfectly over there on the left side. You get the idea though…so pretty! As I stared at my hand with King Hippo and the jeweler looking on, King Hippo mentioned that I should try it on with two bands. So… I may have casually mentioned at one time that I thought it would be cool to have two bands, but it was more of a gift idea for our first or fifth or even tenth anniversary. Who was I to argue with at least trying it on???

So, the ring on top is just a tiny bit thinner than the band of my engagement ring, and the ring on the bottom doesn’t fit quite right, but if you squint your eyes, you can tell what the end result would be. Sparkly! Sign me up! All three of us agreed that the two rings looked the best, and while I was reluctant to get both rings up front, King Hippo insisted. What a treat! I absolutely cannot wait to get the rings back from the jeweler and to wear them all together on our wedding day. We’re still on the search for King Hippo’s band, so hopefully we will get that wrapped up in the next week or so.

The rings is one area of our wedding where we have gone over budget since we were originally only planning for the one band, but we’re justifying it to ourselves as the one thing that we will look at and wear every. single. day. I feel like if there’s one area to go over budget in, it makes sense to have it be something that’s going to last more than just the day of the wedding.

Were there areas of your wedding where you went over your budget but were OK with it?

Jealous! :) I tried to convince my FI for the second band, however he decided to keep it as a gift and surprise me with it someday in the (hopefully) near future! Your ring is very beautiful!

I’ll be doing 2 wedding bands too :) my fi is a jeweler and he never understands why people are willing to spends obscene amounts of money on the wedding and go over budget but not fo so on their rings. A wedding is one day. A ring really is forever.

Miss Hippo! That first photo (with just one band) is the exact look I want for my ring combo — my ring is a baby version of yours. I’m soooo curious: is your halo setting raised from your finger, or is it flat? Mine’s flat, so I can’t wear a straight ring next to it, and I’m wondering how you pulled it off!

It looks fantastic! I also have a halo setting and I got two wedding bands like you did — I love, love, love the way this looks. (Although, yes, I’m obviously biased!) And I completely agree — you look at it every single day, and I still get goosebumps when I look at my “trio” of wedding rings.

@Miss Panther: First, I’ve seen pictures of your gorgeousness and I definitely wouldn’t call your ring a “baby version” of mine…. but I digress! My setting is raised slightly, so that the bands fit perfectly underneath the center stone and can sit right next to the engagement band without a space. I’m sorry that doesn’t help you much….

@Miss Hippo: Oh, darn! I thought maybe you had some sort of magic trick. :) I think I’ll be cutting a hole in my wedding band. Anyway, your trio looks GORGEOUS!

I am getting two bands, too! Are you going to get all 3 fused together? And during the ceremony, are you having King Hippo slide both on, or just kind of fudge it with the one and slip the second one on after the ceremony?

@JillBill: Great questions! I’m definitely not getting them fused together so I have the option to wear just one or both bands without my engagement ring. As far as the ceremony goes, King Hippo will slip both rings on. We are doing a ring warming ceremony, so both of my rings will have circulated through the guests, so I think it just makes sense to put them both on during the ring exchange.

Aw, what a nice fiance! Your rings are gorgeous!! I am firmly believe that the rings have no part in the wedding budget. The budget is for the wedding - that one day. The ring is forever, the tangible reminder of my marriage that I wear every day.

I know I am very fortunate to think this way, and to have been able to spend more money on our bands than we planned - I know some couples have to carefully account for these expenditures too. But if ever there was a place to splurge, I think it makes more sense to splurge on the forever item rather than something you use for just one day, like your dress or flowers.

aww thats so nice! I love your set! I want 2 bands as well, I have a Halo E ring and want my bands to go around it to really make it pop :) or even 2 straight bands with the same intricate design on my band of my e-ring :) cant wait to pick those out!

Lovely, the bands fit perfectly together! I think every wedding deserves a splurge, but unfortunately I’ve already had mine - on photography! So the rings will still have to remain in the budget (and I hope I won’t be in your situation where the most expensive option is so obviously the best one!)

I’m on the 2-band-wagon as well…we ended up slipping both on during the ceremony and switching my e-ring into the center after. One thing to keep in mind…two rings in the same size are a tad more difficult to put on at once since the width changes (apparently the wider the ring the more likely it needs to be sized up slightly).

My DH ordered my e-ring with a matching wedding band, but I have “casually” mentioned I may want a second band like yours! Love it!! Can’t go wrong with a little extra sparkle. ;)

I have a halo setting too and was toying with the idea of getting two bands. I love they way yours looks. Maybe I need to talk with the FI about getting a double band myself. :)

My husband insisted on getting me 2 wedding rings as well…1 to put on during the ceremony and 1, in his words, “to seal the deal.” He thinks it’s stupid that the wedding band goes on first…the lady at the jeweler’s said she was going to steal the “seal the deal” line.
