Mrs. Bacon, Chicago Age and Occupation: 26, Digital Advertising Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, IT Client Services Engagement Date: June 17, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Ravenswood Billboard Factory About Me: I'm a Midwestern girl that can't seem to commit to staying in one place for too long and is constantly daydreaming about my next adventure. I am an aspiring foodie with a weak spot for the unusual and I love semi-reality food television. My other loves easily include laughing as a form of exercise, a book that I can't put down, summer baseball games, espresso with whipped cream, couch potato days and nights with the ridiculous Mr. Bacon, and our two kitties, Lincoln and Sawyer. We're planning a faux-destination wedding for 150 of our closest friends and family in the city we've both adopted as home that has a modern, yet whimsical twist and as many personal touches as we can manage.
About Mrs. Bacon

After finding some inspiration at Belle Vie Bridal and White Chicago, it was finally time to get down to business at the Running of the Brides.

A couple of the Chicago girls spent the night at our place and helped make some signs saying just what we were looking for, as well as some custom shirts so that all of us could find each other.

The front of our super cute custom tees. On the back we had our last names, and I had Mr. Bacon’s!

The three of us were up and out of the house by 4:45 AM, and we met up with our fellow dress hunters at 5:30 AM. That’s two-and-a-half hours before the doors open, and we were in line down the block and around the corner!

So we kept ourselves busy with bagels and coffee, then we went over the game plan. Like the crazy person I am, I swung by Filene’s during my lunch break the day before, drew out a quick floor plan, and noted the best way to attack the situation. I wasn’t sure where the dresses would be, so we took our best guesses and decided that first we would just run for dresses, the slightest of our group would pick a place, and we’d meet back by her with whatever dresses we could find.

After a little bit of stretching, the folks in the front of the line (who arrived as early as 3:00 PM the previous day!) started to pack up their gear and we were ready to go in. But first we had to wait…and wait…and wait…So, of course, we took pictures!

Finally, we all pressed together, we yelled and screamed for the news camera crews, and we all counted down in unison…TEN, NINE, EIGHT, SEVEN, SIX, FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO…ONE!!! And we all started pushing and running toward the doors. We went through the doors and down the escalator, and it was complete and total chaos downstairs. No biggie—we were all prepared with our strategy, until we got to the racks and they looked like this:

We immediately moved on to the next strategy (and I know it’s shady, but c’mon—the dresses start at $249!): sneakily removing dresses from the piles of other brides while they weren’t looking. That strategy was a success! We got six to eight dresses, assessed if I liked any of them and if any of them were in my size, then we went back to the throngs of women and started trading. From 8:00 AM to 9:45 AM I tried on nearly 25 dresses, and I couldn’t find the one. They were either too sparkly, too white, too boring, too fancy, too small, too big, too tattered, or too something.

While I was wading through dresses, one of my helpers spotted a dress that she really liked. (Note, this helper is not engaged, but has been dating her man for over six years and they were looking at condos together, so she’s knows it’s going toward the chapel sooner or later.) She was dying for me to try it on, but it just wasn’t my style, so I suggested she try it on. It fit like a GLOVE! Suddenly we were screaming and jumping around and SO EXCITED! We were buying a dress that day! It wasn’t for the original bride, but it was so exciting that I had all but forgotten that I didn’t end up with a dress.

Running of the Brides was one heck of an experience, and I’m glad that I went for the early-morning camping out and that I tried to find the dress of my dreams, but next time I’ll just swing by in the afternoon when the “crazy brides” have all gone home. I said it back in July while waiting on the sidewalk with these ladies, and I’ll say it again now: If you ever need a wing woman to go dress diving, I’ll be there no matter how early in the morning!

Has anyone had success at Running of the Brides? Would you give it a try?

That looks like so much fun! I wish I could go. Even if I didn’t buy a dress, it would be a blast.

I was like you and there were no dresses when I got into the room (probably a whole 25 seconds after the first group) and it was only my mom and me, but we managed to get our hands on 2 dresses and we were in business. I was about to give up when I found exactly what I was looking for! It was my perfect dress, and for 1/2 of what I was willing to pay for any dress ( and about 5 times cheaper than the actual dress!) it was prefect! it was probably also the best way for me to shop b/c I am so indecisive and having other brides around eyeing my dress made me have to decide pretty darn quick. And like you, I”m all about going back with someone else cause I had so much fun!

I went with a friend of mine, and she found her dress. It was totally fun and exciting as the “helper,” but I dont’t think I’d want to find MY dress that way!

You’re right. It is totally shady “sneakily removing dresses from the piles of other brides while they weren’t looking.” Sorry, I can’t get on board with your strategy.

Crazy! I’ve always wondered how people went with that - it seems WAY too stressful for me.

i can sympathize with you that it sucks to wait in line to see empty racks.
but i strongly disagree with your method of stealing dresses from women who probably lined up earlier. they are brides like you, who want to find the perfect one and you could have taken *the one* from them. what’s worse is that you left the rejects for other women to trade, but didn’t return them to the original person who had the dress. i’m not trying to sound high and mighty, but if i were one of those brides, i’d be pissed.

While I know that it was sneaky and not on the up and up, the helper ladies I was with only took a gowns from women who had stacks 4 feet high of gowns and were too busy bartering to notice. We weren’t the only ones using the strategy since I know that I had gowns taken from my little pile, too. It possible that “the one” for me might have been one of the ones that walked off on their own, but the way I see it, maybe it was karma, maybe it wasn’t, but either way, I wasn’t meant to get a gown that day.

So sorry you didnt find your dress Miss Bacon…I was a helper for a friend last year who actually did find her dress, but it was a whole lot of work! You’ll find it soon dont worry…

On the issue of the gown stealing method…yea, i’m gonna have to agree with the other posters…while it is unfortunate that it happened to you as well, no point in feeding into selfish behavior. I know you probably didnt think about the harm, but those brides with 4 feet high piles also most likely slept on concrete that night just so they could get in early. It’s just kind of mean. :(

But hey, we all make mistakes!

GAH! I had to comment after seeing the other comments.

First, I love the signs and the comraderie. It looks like you girls had so much fun!!!

For the dress stealing - If a bride has a huge pile of dresses and she isn’t even trying them on anymore - she is bartering - sounds to me like she doesn’t have THE ONE. I would think, if she had a pile of dresses, she would try them all on before trying bartering with someone. 4-ft high piles = ridiculous. Don’t worry, her perfect dress wasn’t in that pile. She either found it that day or went somewhere else (like you did) and found it elsewhere.

That type of environment breeds greed and a bride with a 4 ft pile of dresses is epitomizing that. Try them on, let them go if you aren’t sure. I mean, come on, even though it wasn’t in that type of situation, I was in a shop where I tried on 24 dresses and KNEW 22 of them were not THE ONE instantly.

Just remember the FUN you had that day, try not to dwell too much on what people are saying about you taking a dress off a humungo pile. {{hugs}}

Ok, totally understand your reasoning behind stealing from other brides piles, but still just not cool with it. Those girls got there first, and yeah, it’s rude to have that many dresses, i agree and it would have bugged me too, but they were there first and like you wanted to try on as many as possible in hopes of finding the one. Not cool to sneakily remove dresses from their piles when they were not looking.

Though you wrote a nice post about dress hunting (and I’m glad you and your girls had fun), the only thing I got out of the whole thing is that you snatched dresses from other brides. I’m sorry to admit that I stopped reading after that. I can’t get on board with doing something like this. Just because other brides snuck dresses from your pile doesn’t make it an okay thing to do. It’s cliche, but two wrongs don’t make a right. And even if they had a 4 ft. high pile of gowns and were bartering with other brides, you have no idea if there was a gown in that pile that that particular bride LOVED and was so excited to try on because she thought it was “the one”, only for her to find out someone else took it and bartered it away. What happened to common decency? Dress shopping is hard enough for so many girls without stuff like this to deal with too. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but after reading that line, the rest of the post didn’t really matter.

Yay! I’m so glad your bridesmaid found a dress. It definitely made the day worthwhile, even if you didn’t find *the one*.

Wow. I can’t believe that you took dresses from brides that probably slept on the ground all night to be first in line. I know the running of the brides is pretty exciting, and maybe you got caught up in that, but that is pretty tacky. I think it was definitely karma that bit you back.

This not normal shopping. This is hardcore. Kill or be killed. Guard your stash or lose it. Good thinking bringing sneaky-ninja-bridesmaids, Miss Bacon. I support your strategy.

I’ve been reading Weddingbee for months now (love it!), and this is the first time I felt compelled to comment. No matter how you try to justify it, Miss Bacon, what you did was wrong. I read the Bees’ blogs for advice and guidance on how to plan my own wedding. Your behavior and way of thinking is definitely not something I want to emulate. I will be skipping your future entries.

I was there, I was there! We lined up at 9:00pm the night before and were definitely one of the first groups who scored a pile of dresses. Although I am not going to scold you for taking dresses from piles (it was intense in there!), I do believe that my night of sleeping on the streets of Chicago (ouch and yuck) earned me that pile of dresses 4-feet high. Like you, I didn’t find a dress that day… but I loved the experience! Glad to hear that you also enjoyed this crazy opportunity!
