STD Saga – Part 2

January 18th, 2011 @ 2:58 pm by Mrs. Lox

So, today I released the STDs (*snicker*) into the mail. You should know that it was a big farking deal for me. You should also know that I put an odd amount of work into the envelopes the invites were mailed in. You know, those things people tear off and then throw away? Yes, those. Here’s a story of how that happened.

A friend got totally excited when I showed her the STDs (*snort*) and said we should stamp up the envelopes. She drew pictures, and her eyes were all bright and excited. It was really hard to resist. Better yet, she offered to help! I was smitten and in an instant I totally gave in and said we should do it. I went and purchased stamps. I was all a-twitter.

Then I forgot all about it. It wasn’t time to mail them. I wasn’t ready to send them out. I was busy herding other details. I could come up with five more excuses if you give me enough time…

Right. So then it came time to send these bad boys out. And I knew the stamping situation had to be addressed and handled. I was so sure it would be easy. I mean, positive. Luckily not so positive that I didn’t do a test run. Using the STD (*giggle*) envelope as a template, I cut a fake one out of card stock. Then I stamped what I thought would look nice.

Obviously I did not smudge the mock-up. This was done to protect the innocent. Mainly the friends whose address I remembered off the top of my head.

Aaaaand the back. Return address label is mutilated for my protection.

This was not what I had in mind. Not only was it not what I had in mind, I plain old didn’t like it. I was trying to be all positive and upbeat about the problem, so I texted these pictures to my friend. Her response was, “That’s nice, but not what I pictured.” That’s when I knew it was plain old no good.

So I went back to the drawing board. On it was the custom stamp that I ordered after mauling this envelope mock-up, and an idea I could not get out of my head. Embossing. Oh yes, you know this will be fun. So much fun, in fact, that I’m saving it for the next post. Also, it’s kind of fun to leave you hanging. Sorry.

Did you have a project that didn’t turn out how you’d envisioned? Were you smarter than me and did you test it sooner? Spill.

All photos taken by me. And unfortunately they’re of things made by me.

pretty much my STDs turned out nothing like I wanted them too, but it was because I was on a time crunch and took too long to come up with something. In end I waived the white flag and let them go out in there simplified glory.

i fear that i may be headed for a STD stamp fail also.

my biggest mistake so far? i bought that stamp (it has our initials in a heart) and i was so excited to get the envelopes out to the calligrapher that i didn’t stamp the envelopes before hand.

i had a nightmare! a nightmare! that i couldn’t get the ink on that stamp right and i ruined ALL of my envelopes.

let’s hope that doesn’t happen!

I always love your posts– they are so hilarious! And I can totally understand your DIY stamping fail– I had a similar thought for my Christmas cards this year. Stamp the envelopes to make them more festive! But it looked weird and smudgy. .

I actually like the stamps on the front, am I alone? The double stamps on the back aren’t ideal, but the ones on the front are cute!!

I like the stamps on the front. I’m thinking about using a graphic in a similar way on the front of our envelopes, but I’m concerned about the graphic interfering with post office reading the mailing address. Have you seen anything about this?

I stamped my envelopes as well with little hearts (we found a cube stamp that has 4 different sizes of hearts on it), not sure I liked the end result.

Didn’t like the end result of my invites so much either (not terrible, just not what I envisioned at all…the plan was to heat emboss them but I scrapped that idea) but…what’s done is done. No way am I redoing those freaking things.

I think I would like your front stamps way better if they were in a more neutral tone. And after my crapload of stamping envelopes and such, I discovered that instead of PRESSING the stamp onto the stamp pad, I had to tap it on, so that the stamp would get just enough ink on it to not smudge, and would therefore show more detail. Perhaps you could do a second trial?

@el0624:

Sorry to double post, your comment didn’t load til after I had posted! I took my stamped envelopes to the post office today and he never said anything about it. Then again…they always screw up my regular postage anyways, so I guess we shall see…I’ll go out to my pile of invites shoved in my mailbox and have to redo it…haha.

I used a rubber stamp on my STDs and liked it. . . but some I stamped upside down and sent them anyway ;-). You have to pick you battles in wedding planning!
