Our Rings

January 18th, 2011 @ 10:39 am by Mrs. Eggs Benedict

I have a confession to make. And I sometimes wonder when I say this out loud if it means I have to turn in my bride card somewhere. Are you ready? Here it is.

I don’t want a diamond wedding band. In fact, I’m not sure how much I even like diamonds sometimes.

Now don’t get me wrong—I like some diamonds. I love the three stones I own: my engagement ring from Mr. EB and a pair of diamond studs that my parents gave me when I turned 21. But honestly? I’ve never wanted a diamond wedding band, just a plain metal wedding band. One reason is because I prefer simpler jewelry in general. But the bigger reason is because Mr. EB and I want to have matching metal bands.

See, growing up, I saw what my parents wore and assumed that all wedding bands were yellow gold with no other embellishments beyond engraving on the inside. Of course, I learned pretty quickly that that’s not the case, but I still love the classic elegant look that a simple band gives off. And I really like that our bands will be the same. (Well, his will be a bit wider.) I know it’s not for everyone, and there are so many gorgeous diamond bands out there to choose from, but this is what feels right for us.

So that’s my big confession. Mr. EB and I are getting matching plain wedding bands, and I have no idea what we’ll be engraving on the inside. I like the idea of surprising each other, but I also like the idea of engraving the same thing on each ring. How did you decide what (if anything) to engrave on the inside of your wedding bands?

Like you, I wanted a plain engagement ring. I thought I didn’t want to take away the beuty of my engagement ring if the band had diamonds. However, when I went to look at bands the plain band next to my e-ring did not look good. The sales person actually found an anniversary band - with diamond - that matched my e-ring and it looks perfect.
Just like my wedding dress, my wedding band choice ends up totaly opposite of what I thought I wanted.

I agree with this 100%! I always thought wedding rings were plain, yellow gold because that’s what my parents have!

I am not a huge fan of diamond bands either, and I plan on getting matching, plain white gold bands!

I’m still debating with myself about this one. My e-ring has pave diamonds around most of the band, and I’ve always really wanted a plain white gold band but now I’m not sure how it will look. Have to do some shopping and trying on I guess.

I would like to get it engraved if that is the way I go though…fiance and I would have to figure out what exactly….

We just bought plain bands. (mine is white gold his is yellow). I tried on fancier bands and they didn’t look right with the ring. My engagement is an heirloom and I have my Grandmothers 4 stone matching wedding band too, so I can always add that to my ring finger if I want to dress it up for an event or something.

me too! well, kind of. i want a plain band for my wedding band, because i do a lot of crafting and such and don’t want to have to take off my ring every time i work with my hands. also, fi wants to match :) now, maybe soooomeday, i’ll consider a diamond band for like, an anniversary present… ;)

as for engraving, our current plan is to surprise each other! heehee.

I LOOOOVE how plain bands look! Two of my friends have slender plain bands (without even an engagement ring) and I think they are so understated and elegant.
I don’t have an e-ring, and I would have gotten a plain ring had I not inherited my grandmother’s slim channel-set eternity band.

Im also looking at plain wedding bands because its so hard to find anything that would match my e-ring. As for engraving, were both having “always and forever” because its something we always say to each other lol!x

DH and I have plain wedding bands as well. However Ive seen my ring next to a diamond band and it looks so much better! A few years down the road I’ll be “upgrading” to a diamond band but I do love the idea of matching bands!

Are there any sayings that you and your FH say to one another? We are still trying to decide what to engrave as well. Depending on what sorts of vows you’re doing, you might include something like that? I like the idea of “With this ring, I thee wed.” or something along those lines.

We surprised each other. I liked that it was personalized and we had a fun little thing to do together after the ceremony. We went to the side and handed our rings back, read them to each other and put them on each other again. His ring says “Until my heart stops beating.” and mine says “Grow old with me.” <3

If Cinnamon Buns didn’t have a diamond from one of his granny’s rings, I’d be very happy with a diamond-less band. As it is, my wedding band will have 1 diamond, and my engagement ring is a half-eternity band! Bucking the trends, that’s us!

I totally agree with this. There’s a lot of reasons I want a simple band, but the biggest one is the idea that we will have similar rings. Though I think I want something with squared off edges and he may go for more of a rounded comfort fit.

As far as engraving, when he first told me he loved me, he used a quote from Virgil… the translation is something like “here it comes, that old familiar flame.” So if we do choose to engrave ours, that’s what I want to use.

OMG, I 100% agree! I was married this year with two other ladies close to me (I got married third while I was the first to be engaged, but whatever ;) ) and both of them had diamonds in the bands of their engagement rings AND their wedding rings. It just seemed excessive for me. My ring(s) are platinum which is way over the top in terms of what I would have selected for myself, but they are all hand engraved with a pattern/texture — and I love it so much more than I would have loved lots of diamonds. I’m with you 100%!

My husband and I have matching Titanium bands from a seller on etsy. I actually love how simple it is. At first we did it simply because of budget…we didn’t have the money for bands with diamonds in them! But my simple band has definitely grown on me. I’ve even gotten compliments on it!

We both have plain bands - mine is white gold and his is yellow (and wider) - they are engraved with the same thing on the inside, but boy, did it take a while to be sure what we were going to engrave!

Thank you for writing about this! I really adore simple, plain bands but have fallen victim to current trends. It seems like everyone expects that diamonds are included on a wedding band and when I mention that I am not interested in added bling, they look at me like I have a million heads!

After all the times my e-ring has been to the jeweler’s because of the stones coming loose, there was NO WAY I was going to get a wedding band with more stones in it. I’m just too much of a tomboy to be that careful with something attached to my hands. I chose a plain sterling silver ring from the Ren Faire with a knot detail to symbolize tying our lives together. FH ordered a plain sterling band from etsy with the word “love” engraved on it in binary code. They’re simple and sweet, hold meaning for both of us as individuals and as a couple, and I won’t lose my mind worrying about my wedding band like I have trying to baby my e-ring! I think simple wedding bands are best!

I’m not a jewelry person and have hated having a raised stone on my e-ring. Don’t get me wrong I think its beautiful but it is constantly getting caught up in things, especially my hair. So on our wedding day I am taking off my engagement ring and putting on a wedding band. My band does have a diamond chip set in the band, but its flush. As I wanted a little bling still. As for the engraving we went with our first names & the date, boring I know.

I’m like you…I like simple jewelry. I have 3 pieces of jewelry with diamonds. a solitaire ring with small diamond that my mom gave me for my 16th birthday. Then a set of earrings and necklace that my s/o got me. Their pretty simple, and the pendant is small.

I’ve considered simple bands like that. I know he likes the Scott Kay sparta ring, but it’s a bit much. I’ve considered an art deco type bands (I don’t want stones either) but we may just do simple bands like you.

Yeah I think the idea of matching is cool. My parents both bought themselves the Tiffany Etoile with lots of tiny diamonds to keep things minimalist and sleek and I think it’s great!
