About Mrs. Prairie Dog

MOH Pizzazz

January 19th, 2011 @ 12:04 pm by Mrs. Prairie Dog

My BFF is no diva, and I’m sure she needs no recognition for being the best pal a girl could have. However, she is my Matron of Honor, and I want her to stand out a little bit.

When I was her Maid of Honor, my bouquet was slightly bigger than the BMs’ but slightly smaller than the bride’s, like this:

(source)

Unfortunately, the bouquet I have in mind for myself is kind of…compact. Like…full-bodied, but on the petite side. (Like me. Ha.) So I doubt anyone would notice a discrepancy between the MOH bouquet and the others.

So…how do I give my BFF a little extra MOH oomph?

I’m letting the girls do whatever they want with their hair and accessories, so at first I thought we’d work something in via the dresses.

Perhaps a different dress AND a different color, like so:

MOH Pizzazz : wedding bridesmaid dress cincinnati Differe differe

(source)

Or same color, different dress:

(P.S….loving the MOH’s dark waves and chic hairpiece. Get it girrrrrrl.)

The idea I seriously toyed with was this one. Same dress, but bridesmaids wear tea length and MOH wears full length:

MOH Pizzazz : wedding bridesmaid dress cincinnati Purpled purpled

(source)

Yes to the long/short combo…but I have to have it on blog record that I do NOT endorse this hair/flower growth.

But then, in shopping for bridesmaid dresses, we landed on getting five of the same dress. So…back to the drawing board. One of the more popular things, apparently, is a sash/belt for the honor attendant, but I’m not convinced that idea will work with the dress. My bridesmaid dresses look something like this:

MOH Pizzazz : wedding bridesmaid dress cincinnati Blackdr blackdr

(source)

If we tried for the sash, I’d pick a really formal, embellished one, like this one via Etsy:

MOH Pizzazz : wedding bridesmaid dress cincinnati Crystal crystal

(source)

One of the weirder ideas that has come up is having a seamstress add additional sheer black fabric to the one shoulder, in a ruffle pattern. This would sort of mimic our first-runner-up dress, pictured below:

Any other ideas? Are you doing anything to distinguish honor attendants?

What about different colors in her bouquet? or like some wicked awesome etsy hair piece a la Miss Broch’s post http://www.weddingbee.com/2011/01/17/handmade-wedding-accessories/#more-180965

I also really like the sash idea…

I am doing the whole larger bouquet thing for my matron of honor!!!

ooh I love these ideas!!! I’m going to do it with the flowers, I’m going with dark eggplant color dress (at least i am THIS week :) and I want the girls to have white flowers and then I’ll have dark purple flowers, my sister (MOH) will have white flowers with a few purple ones i think this will look super cute :) unless I go with a lighter version of the dress for her I haven’t really decided and I’ve got time!

I will have 6 BMs and 1 MOH. I am using my flowers as my way to have the MOH stand out. All the girls will each carry a solid color of daisies in their bouquet, 2 BMs per color. Then, my MOH will carry a bouquet with all 3 colors of daisies included. :)

I love the different length dress idea too. So cute!

Ooooo oooo I’m so glad you wrote about this. My MOH and I are trying to figure out the exact same thing right now, and we’ve considered every scenario you mentioned above. What we’re leaning towards now is to have her in a grey dress, as opposed to the other maids’ navy dresses. I’ll let ya know how that works out.

However, I came across something months ago that I thought would be a perfect compromise….unfortunately, you’re going to have to wait while I track it down in my bookmarks…..please hold…… :)

I love the sash idea! I think great accessories that are different from the other maids would make her stand out. I like the idea of a great hair piece or a statement necklace/earrings.

My MOH is wearing a different style dress in the same color and will be wearing different colored shoes than the other ladies. Does that help at all?

A friend of mine had her sisters as her MOHs and they each wore a pretty flower in their hair, and the other girls didn’t.

Consider adding something special to her bouquet, whether it be feathers, rhinestones, pearl beads or even just a unique bouquet wrap from the other bridesmaids.
I like the little details like the accessory options - love the beaded belt/sash you show from Etsy! Or the statement hairpiece in the picture with the MOH?

I’m not a super fan of the long dress/short dress option…I dont love how it looks and I wouldn’t want to look like the odd girl out…but I may be biased since I generally prefer not to wear long dresses~

If you’re set on a different dress option, then I would get the same color (or different shade of that color) in a different style, but the same length.

The other thing about your first picture is that the MOH has a color in her bouquet that none of the other BMs have. That’s an option too but it won’t differentiate her at the reception, if that matters as well.

We’re doing the MOH long, bridesmaid short dress idea.
I love the sash route for your girls, though.

I agree with the putting the difference in the bouquet like others have suggested. I always thought it looked weird when there was one girl that was so drastically different than the others (different color dress, long/short dress). It was almost like she stuck out in a bad way. But that’s just my opinion. Obviously others disagree!

My MOH and I are having the same issue at the moment! All my girls are wearing different styles and matching shoes. I’m hoping we will be able to differentiate her by bouquets somehow or perhaps have her wear a different color cardigan/shrug than the rest of my girls. I really like the long dress vs. short dresses pictures you posted, that’s a great idea.

I vote for the sash idea.

My maid of honor will have a different color sash then the rest of the girls. Everyone opted to wear the same dress and my bouquet will be small as well it was the most sensible option.

My MOH requested some differentiation. Since all the girls had different dresses, we gave her a different bouquet - hers was all one flower/color while the other girls had a mix. I knew she was going to have an up-do so as a surprise I also bought a few hair flower clips for her from etsy -she loved them :)

I’m doing a fun merlot wrap dress from Etsy that can be worn in a million different ways for my bridesmaids (NataJane on Etsy has the most fantastic dresses!) while my MOH sister will be wearing a completely different style and color in greens and plum.
Everyone in my bridal party will be wearing fascinators from MolliesMillinery on Etsy (made by my sister/MOH!) and will be rocking the same plum and greens bouquet.

I am giving all of my bridesmaids a single lily instead of a bouquet and my moh a small bouquet with a single lily and a couple of roses. What do you think about something along those lines?

When I was MOH, my bouquet had different colored roses from the other BMs. Since my girls are wearing 2 different dresses, I decided to add a different flower to the MOH bouquet to try and set her apart.

Different bouquet and/or sash are great ideas! I have it a little easier. My sis/MOH loves to make her own clothing, so she’s going buy the same dress as the others but alter it to suit her fun fashion sense (within reason!). Now I think I will give her a special bouquet, too! Thanks for the post!

I have two MOHs (couldnt pick between my two sisters), and they are going to have some sparkles added to their bouquets. They will also wear ivory hair flowers, while all the other bridesmaids will wear navy flowers that match their gowns. Everyone is wearing a different gown in the same color by the same designer, so I thought this would be a nice way to set them apart from the rest of the girls.
