Mrs. Barrettes, Tumon, Guam/Napa, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Dancer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Licensed Building Contractor Engagement Date: November 16, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: V. Sattui Winery About Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!

A Napa Fairytale: First Look

January 19th, 2011 @ 2:20 pm by Mrs. Barrettes

We decided early in planning that the first look option was for us. Our ceremony would begin at 6:30 PM and the reception ended at 11 PM. That didn’t leave adequate time for the kind of formal photos we wanted. We both have large families and it would take time to organize and photograph everyone. Doing a first look at 4:45 PM allowed 15 minutes for just us, an hour for formal family photos, and 30 minutes to regroup and collect ourselves for the ceremony.

I researched where the tradition of the groom not seeing the bride until she was walking down the aisle originated, and I found it dated back to arranged marriages.

The bride’s parents did not want the groom seeing the bride first, for fear he may find her hideous and refuse to marry her. By the time she was walking down the aisle, it would be too late for him to flee. Feeling this would not apply in our situation, we decided it was okay for us to break this tradition in lieu of a longer time to celebrate!

I waited in the lawn and chatted with my peeps until I got the signal to walk.

When he turned around it was like magic, and that was the only moment when I saw real tears in his eyes. Mr. Barrettes has very good control over his emotions; not to say he isn’t emotional, but the look in his eye isn’t one I will ever forget.

I flashed him my new bow ring, and he had me do a turn so he could see the whole package. He told me I was beautiful and my dress was perfect. I was so happy to finally be able to share my dress with him—I knew he would love it. He always goes for form-fitting over poofy.

I admired how handsome he was, commented that I loved the bow tie and of course he had me make sure it was straight in the front and the back. I wondered in this moment if the tie should have been under his shirt collar, but decided it was better to bite my tongue and I just fixed it up and told him it was perfect. I’ve since learned his tie was correct. The tie only goes under if it’s a point collar.

We had a brief chat about the morning’s events, and then he produced two wine glasses and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. That’s my man!

We cheers’ed to each other and to our beautiful wedding day, and stole a kiss before we began to pose for photos.

To those who think a first look will ruin your moment, I assure you it won’t. The moment you first see your beloved on your wedding day will be real and it will be yours and it will be right. I am thankful that no one else was around for our moment (save our ninja photographers) and we enjoyed those stolen minutes alone on our wedding day.

Are you still debating a first look? I can put up a good argument for it if you’re on the fence!

You two are absolutely stunning and radiate such joy! I love your first look. I wish that we’d done one for the same reasons you mentioned - not enough time afterward to get all the photos we wanted. Ah well…. :)

Your pictures are beautiful! Also, your husband is a smart man for thinking of the wine. I might need to remember that for our first look.

Aww I love this! You two look SO good! Thanks for sharing about the tradition of seeing the bride at the end of the aisle! I didn’t know that, and feel EVEN BETTER about our plan to have a first look too!

I used that exact same research to tell my friend (who was appalled that we were going to *gasp* see each other before the ceremony) why I was perfectly fine ignoring that custom! Love that you included it here! And I think it’s great that Mr. Barrettes had a bottle of wine for you to share - what a guy!

I haven’t been on weddingbee in a while (a year plus since my wedding) but I was bored at work today so I started browsing — you are gorgeous! and you look so relaxed and happy on your wedding day. I remember my own first look and I remember how awesome it was. I look forward to reading the rest of your recaps!

Not to knock other bees, but I just wanted to comment that I love when I follow a bee from planning to execution to recaps. I have followed your wedding and I always hoped and prayed that you would not wait a year or more to do your recaps because I COULDN’T wait to see how your mum’s dress turned out. Your seamstress is AMAZING and I love what she did with your dress. Your recaps continue to amaze me. I loved the one you did just before this one (on your way to the first look) and this one, ah, the emotions, the dress, the wine, everything. PERFECT. Can’t wait for the ceremony pictures :)

We’re planning to do a summer evening wedding starting at 7:00 so reading about your timeline for photos is really helpful! We’re planning a first look and your photos make me even more excited, but when did you take photos with your bridal parties?

I am completely in love with your dress. My fiance and I are debating on the first look thing vs. seeing each other @ the ceremony. I’m shooting for the first look and I’m sure I can convince my guy to agree! :-)
