About Mrs. Eggs Benedict

Four Minutes in the Morning

January 19th, 2011 @ 1:58 pm by Mrs. Eggs Benedict

Mr. EB sent me the link to this article awhile ago. Brad Feld and his wife, Amy, have a routine in which they “try to—fully clothed—spend four minutes together every morning 100% focused on each other.”

Once both of them are up in the morning, they spend “four minutes” together without computers, books, kids, or other people. Whether it ends up being four or fifteen minutes, it’s the act of taking time out of the morning to be with each other. It’s time spent focusing on each other, reconnecting with each other; and in so doing, they keep their relationship with each other as one of their highest priorities. Due to their busy travel schedules, they often do this by phone or Skype. But they make time to do it every morning.

Mr. EB and I haven’t exactly figured out our morning routines—they’ve been interrupted and hijacked and messed with by all manner of things since we moved in together. And when we do end up awake at the same time in the morning before heading off to work or a run or wherever we might be going, we’re too often focused on our laptops or a book instead of each other.

I love what Brad and Amy are doing. In looking at some of the different relationships of friends and family around me, I know how important communication and focusing on your partner really is. And as we’re getting ready for our wedding and having fun with all the planning, I’m incredibly thankful that Mr. EB is as focused on our marriage and keeping our relationship strong as I am. He’s excited about the wedding, of course, but knowing that he wants to do everything he can to make our marriage a strong and lasting one makes me love him that much more.

Mornings are way too chaotic for us. I savor bed time, where we get to cuddle and talk while unwinding and in a nice, snuggly bed! But, I get what you are saying, it is so important to have time to yourselves as a couple in the midst of all the crazy wedding stuff!

I agree … mornings are hectic. And with our schedules, they’re never really awesome.

We’ve started spending quality time, fully-clothed, in the 15 minutes before Jon Stewart comes on every night. It’s the time where we’ve already unwound from work and have decompressed from whatever other stressors are taking place. It’s when we each have had a drink to take the edge off and the roommates have already gone to bed. We talk about anything from the wedding to movies to books to our dog … who is usually snoring with his head on one of our laps. And it’s nice.

@Mrs. Glasses @Mrs. Angry Panda: To me, the point is that you have a time set aside during the day at some point to do this, whether in the morning or right before bed or whenever. Mr. EB gets annoyed when I try to start big conversations right before bed (because then he can’t sleep!), so morning works for us. I think the act of making your partner and your relationship a priority at some point during the day is what really matters.

This is such a cute idea! It’s too bad that I have morning yoga. Mr Bacon would not be pleased with a 5:15 am wake up call to chat. I can just imagine his face. LOL!

I don’t think we could do morning - but I think we could definitely do it in the evenings. I love this idea!
