Newport Nuptials: Lights Out

January 20th, 2011 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Starfish

The week leading up to the wedding there were a couple surprises. The biggest came Friday night after our rehearsal dinner.

The night was winding down. We originally planned to see our favorite band, Those Guys, at a local bar, but Mr. S and I decided to be good and go to bed early. We stopped by Starfish Mom’s suite and the bridesmaids were there, so we hung out for a bit.

Then there were two huge blue explosions outside of the window and…the room went dark.

The entire block lost power the night before the wedding.

Fire trucks and police cars quickly showed up and they began to work on the issue. In the meantime, we decided to stop by MIL & FIL Starfish’s room to say hi before bed, as they invited a few friends by.

So in the dark we walked down the hall, only to find a full-on party. We had stopped by earlier and there were a few people, but when we returned, there were people out the door. Security stopped by and gave us some glow-sticks and the party went on.

Soon groomsmen and other friends were showing up and the party got so large, that it broke into two and part of it ended up in our suite.

About an hour or two after the lights went out, power came on an cheers ensued. We later found out our bridesmaids who were sleeping in the hotel across the street were woken up to cheers of “happy new year” (no idea?) when the lights came on.

Our early night turned into a late night. Mr. Starfish checked in to see if I needed to go to bed, but we both agreed we were having too much fun, and decided to keep it going. We couldn’t have planned a better “welcome-type” party if we wanted to. I think it was around midnight when we finally got to bed.

The party is now called the “lights out” party and is Mr. Starfish’s second favorite memory only to the wedding day. It’s pretty high on my list of memorable wedding weekend events, too.

Did you have any surprise events surrounding your wedding? Were they good surprises?

That sounds like so much fun. I’m glad your family and friends know how to relax and have a good time. And so glad the power came back on in time for you guys to be able to have alarms and electricity to get ready for your big day.
