Cake Stand(s)

January 20th, 2011 @ 4:34 pm by Miss Oatmeal

Um, why are cake stands so utterly expensive? Every single one I like just happens to be ridiculously priced. I understand why, of course. They’re beautiful, will turn into family heirlooms, and are just plain fun to have around the house. But when you’re talking dessert bars, well, that requires many cake stands. Multiple. More than two. Like ten.

And this cobalt blue one…I just die.

This may have to be a group effort here. I certainly can’t afford to purchase the ones pictured above to make our dessert bar. Anyone have some ideas of where to find affordable stands? Because if my dessert bar doesn’t look just like this, I’m probably going to cry. No matchy matchy necessary…I’ll take whateva (as long as they’re glass and beautiful, of course). I’ll be waiting by the phone for your calls. ;)

Are you having a dessert bar? Where are you getting your cake stands?

I always love your inspiration photos girl! We have the same taste for sure! We actually bought stands from Marshalls, and a few milk vase plates from thirft stores. Good luck finding some good ones :)

I had the same problem… still only have 3 plain glass ones from AC Moore - $12 each. I need a few more but it’s breaking the bank… I might just get decorative doilies or something to put our cupcakes on.

Ohhhh….I LOVE these!

Try shopping at thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales. Also ask to borrow from family and friends. That’s what I’ve been doing to stay in our budget!

Happy treasure hunting!

I just read a Canadian magazine blog that talks about DIY cake plates. Check out the link below - may be a great solution!

I think I have 5 currently, that have come from Home Goods and Williams Sonoma.

I saw a tutorial somewhere about basically super-gluing china/plates onto candle holders. Like here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/oliviaraejames

PS…I laughed out loud / almost cried this weekend when there was one at an antique shop for $100. For used porcelain? PASS

I had a dessert reception hosted by my church– it was gorgeous! I too wanted lots of cake stands… I drool looking at these pictures! Check ebay, etsy, thrift stores, antique stores… and Google around thefind.com. it’ll show you cake stands all across the internet. :) can’t wait to see your wedding pictures!!

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. I’m definitely going to start broadening the search a bit into areas other than ridiculously priced antique stores!

@JennK: Thanks for the tutorial…it looks so easy! I might consider this if I exhaust all my other options :)

@Miss Prairie Dog: $100…really? Why do they think they can get away with that!? You should try to haggle…haha

Definitely try the DIY route…it is so easy and if you don’t like it all you wasted was the glue (I use E6000), a plate and a candlestick. I saved a pic from the internet of a to-die pieced together silverplate one too if you want to go a more vintage route: http://acottageindustry.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8345252b269e2011571032d24970c-pi

Goodwill, Marshalls/TJ Maxx, Homegoods. Etsy also, though they come with a bit of a mark-up. My mom picked up a great milk glass one for me from Etsy for $40 and I saw the exact same one at a vintage store in LA the other day for $285!!

I love that two tiered one with the macarons and mini cupcakes! I am of no help because we made a DIY cupcake stand, but I’ve heard you can score at thrift stores.

I heat Cake Stand Porn. I just do! Luckly our baker friend already has 5, so I might just get some low trays to finish out our sweet table :) I also might be knocking on your door if we need more! haha… only kind of kidding!

We got these as a Christmas gift, and they’re sooo pretty in person!: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=16279706
$20 for three of them … not too bad, right? And they look a LOT like the cobalt blue you love, except round. :)

I got mine from hobby lobby when they were 50% off. They are simple but cute and inexpensive.

I know you’re in central California, so it’s a bit of a drive, but every second Sunday there’s an antique fair in Sacramento. I got 10 cake stands for an average of $10 a piece, some were more, some were less. It’s hit in miss, and you have to be a tough negotiator, but I got all of them in one day and checked that off my list.

Beg/borrow/steal from family and friends? You never know what people have in their cupboards. Just be sure to make a list of whose is whose with a picture of the stand.

After that, hit the thrift shops!
