Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).
About Mrs. Hippo

Recessional Rejection

January 20th, 2011 @ 11:06 am by Mrs. Hippo

After agreeing on just about everything for the wedding to this point, King Hippo recently put the kibosh on one of my brilliant ideas. Boo!

See, we’ve been on the hunt for a recessional song for a while now. I was wanting something upbeat and fun with feel good lyrics. After much searching, I came up with (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher. That’s not what we disagreed on. In fact, the mister agreed to that selection pretty quickly so all was good. But then my creative brain starting churning and I thought, “How can we make our wedding even more memorable and unique?” This, my friends, is where we ran into trouble.

After listening to the song over and over again, I realized that it would be awesome to have it performed live by a group instead of just playing the recorded version. I imagined a group of singers hidden for the entire ceremony but emerging just for the final song, serenading the crowd as we recessed up the aisle as man and wife, followed by our bridal party. But not just any group of singers. A gospel choir! Kinda like this:

Oh, don’t fool yourself, the Hippos most certainly are not on an unlimited wedding budget.

In fact, we pretty much have zero dollars budgeted for ceremony music, which is why we are using the art gallery’s awesome sound system and having a close friend play guitar. But I am not one to be limited by budget. There had to be a way! I did some internet hunting and discovered that my university has a gospel choir. Sweet! I shot off an email to the Student Affairs department and was able to find the contact for the group who said the choir had performed at a couple of other weddings and would perform a song at the ceremony for a mere $100. One hundred dollars, yo! I. am. a. genius.

Uhhhh…King Hippo didn’t think so. He thought the idea was over the top. Too flashy. Too much. “But it’s only $100!” Didn’t matter. It was the perception of it being extravagant that he was opposed to. While I think it would be awesome and unique and memorable, King Hippo thought it was extreme. This, my friends, was one battle I wasn’t going to win, and with only two months left on the countdown clock, I’m not going to spend any energy trying to convince him. It’s just as well…keeping track of a gospel choir would be just one more thing to worry about. And maybe he’s right. I can see some of our guests being turned off, thinking we were making this wedding a big production. Although…I do think it was a pretty brilliant idea with a totally affordable price tag. Alas.

Have you had ideas you thought were completely brilliant that your significant other vetoed?

personally I think you should have fought a little harder for it. I don’t think it is too flashy AT ALL. What a cool ending to the ceremony! Men, sometimes they just can’t see vision.

I think that is an absolutely awesome and wonderful idea! and the price tag just confirms it! If that were me in the church watching you guys walk out as husband and wife to that it would be such a surprise that i would probably be moved to tears! It would be memorable indeed! I’d say give it a few days and re-introduce the idea!

I wanted to do the exact same thing. I’m still pushing for it, but I have a lot more time to work on it. I got my inspiration from the same video you posted.

Aw, too bad he wouldn’t go for it! I think that sounds like the most amazing recessional EVER.

Watch the begining of Love Actually - during the recessional of the wedding they have the musician popping up from all around performing the Beatles song Love - it is amazing! Show him this and maybe it will change his mind

We have a lot in common Miss Hippo!! We are have a friend play his guitar during our ceremony and our recessional song is also Your Love - but we are going the recorded version route! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsdtUMdXXJg

Great idea though! And that price tag? Maybe a bit more gentle nudging is necessary…

Aww, that would’ve been cool. And I don’t think it’s too “flashy” because its a student choir, not some kind of professional choral group. But a friend playing guitar is very sweet and probably a lot less stress. Anytime Mr. G had strong opinions about something wedding related I went with it because let’s face it, he had very little say in anything else :)

Oh man, has he not seen Love Actually? I think a live gospel choir would be AMAZING! But not having one will definitely not spoil the wedding :)

I’m sorry - I have to be the one dissenter. I agree with King Hippo… just too much. There’s a reason everyone is mentioning Love Actually - this would look like a dramatic movie set.

Good idea but I bet even you would think it was over the top on the day of…

I think I would have to override him on this. A choir would be awesome.

I so want a gospel choir. I find it so moving but haven’t even done the research because I KNOW it’s out of our budget. Thanks for this idea. I hadn’t even considered them coming in to close the ceremony! You brought the idea back to life, Miss Hippo!

We have a few friends who were in the choir for our local symphony orchestra, and they sang the song I walked in to, as well as the recessional- it was very cool and different and meaningful, and I think our guests liked it.

What if it was just a few choir members rather than the whole choir? It would be less flashy, but would still make for a beautiful send off.

I’ve actually never seen Love Actually… sounds like I have to check it out!

@Mrs. Glasses: I’m with ya. King Hippo has only felt strongly about a couple of issues, so I figure if he really feels strongly about them and he’s let all the other 1,239 decisions go, then I should probably fold once or twice!

@KMA: I definitely can see how both both you and he think it’s too much. It’s kind of a fine line, you know?

I so hope someone uses this idea!!! Keep me posted if you do!

I love the idea and it is sooooo reasonable. I’m usually the one vetoing stuff. LOL However, my FI usually loves and agrees with all of my ideas.

Both FI and I are high school band directors and I thought it would be ADORABLE to have members of our band get together to play pep band tunes outside of the chapel to entertain the guests. But alas….I don’t think he realized I was serious and just brushed it up.

Isn’t there some movie that in the end of the first scene (which was a wedding ceremony) people started busting out singing and playing instruments?? Love the idea though!!
