Celebrity marriages have had a bad time of it in the past few months, haven’t they?
Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds, kaput after two years of marriage.
Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman, after five years and one baby.
Eva Longoria and Tony Parker, who I always thought seemed so solid.
And oh man—Sandra Bullock’s divorce earlier this year? I hated that her beautiful face was splashed all over magazine covers. Though I imagine it must feel nice to know that the whole country loves and supports you, I can’t imagine having my personal pain used for profit. (I mean, have you seen Notting Hill?)
I’m sure it’s really hard to be a married celebrity.
The job often dictates a long-distance relationship, the media starts rumors about co-stars, and I’m sure the opportunities for infidelity are frequent. No matter how much money or fame you may have, severing a relationship is painful, and I really feel for these couples.
While I don’t really keep up with the particulars of celeb culture, other than to glance at the headlines while in line at the grocery store, this one socked me in the gut, you guys:
I really, really hope they find a way to make it work. As a die-hard Friends fan, Mr. PD and I were both like: noooooo. They seemed great together—they’re both funny and a little weird, they’ve been married for more than ten years, and they seem really committed to their daughter. A great little family.
But do you know why I was so sure it would work out for them?
Years ago, I read that they’d had their rings engraved with the following: A deal’s a deal. At the time, I was thirteen or fourteen and just…horrified at how unromantic that was. What a shame, I thought. Barely married and the romance is gone.
Now I have a more realistic concept of adult relationships (i.e. life is not She’s All That), I think that inscription is fantastic. To me, it says: I will remember that I made a commitment, even in the hard times. We chose this, and we’ll work to make it work. And I really hope we see more celebs doing just that.
To close, here’s a picture of my all-time favorite celebrity couple:
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward—fifty years, three daughters, together ’til the end. I really admire that. (Plus, HOW cute is that picture?) I also really like everything Heidi Klum says about her relationship with Seal. I’d take it pretty badly if they ever split up.
Do you feel sort of invested in celeb marriages? Have any favorites? Have any of the recent string of divorces taken you by surprise?
