Organic Almond Favors

January 20th, 2011 @ 4:13 pm by Mrs. Pancakes

For centuries, almonds were commonly distributed to wedding guests as a symbol of well wishes. In the thirteenth century, almonds coated with sugar, known as confetti, were introduced. Confetti soon transformed to sugared almonds, which later evolved into a wedding favor for modern-day weddings. Traditionally, five Jordan almonds are presented in a confection box or wrapped in elegant fabric to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health, and happiness. Thus, the bitterness of the almond and the sweetness of the coated candy have for centuries exemplified marriage’s bittersweetness.

These little favors were put together by the wonderful woman whose kids I used to babysit. She runs an organic snack company out of her home called Sweet Harlem Pop (because she started with popcorn). These are little favors that she put together for a friend’s wedding in Arizona. She was nice enough to let me have one as a sample for my own wedding. Not only are they adorable, but the maple almonds are super yummy.

She even includes a sweet little poem, which reads:

Sweet Harlem Crunch Almonds for thee

Herein sugared almonds for each guest to eat

To remind us that life is both bitter and sweet

Five special wishes for the new husband and wife

Health, wealth, happiness, children and a long life!

How sweet is that?

How have people close to you contributed to your wedding? What sweet treats have your friends and family DIY’ed for your big day? What other creative things have you done or seen done (well) with almonds as wedding favors?

LOVE LOVE LOVE your idea. We are narrowing down a couple of family favorites for our wedding favor/treat.

Yes I love the history about the jordan almond.

I recently found on you tube directions for making jordan almond favors that were a flower. It was pretty cool.
