About Mrs. Lox

Because I Wasn’t Going to Wear Pants

January 20th, 2011 @ 3:22 pm by Mrs. Lox

I mean, pants are a totally cool wedding-attire option for people of any gender. But let’s face it: I was going for the dress. So I have decided it’s time to start the story of my dress shopping.

Because I Wasn’t Going to Wear Pants : wedding baltimore wedding dress Lox11 lox1

First let me tell you about the anxiety this caused me. I may have mentioned this before, but I am not exactly built like a Barbie doll. I mean, I’m plus-sized. There, I said it. I wear a street size 16 or 18. And let’s face it, gown samples are not typically sized to accommodate me. So I had bad visions of how this was going to go. I imagined dresses I couldn’t get on my body. I pictured salespeople trying to convince me to hold things up in front of me to get an idea. I envisioned seeing tons of things on the rack that I could never even hope to try on. Shopping for me is frustrating on the best of days, and this was not looking like it would be the best of days.

So I delayed. I waited. I put things off. My friends at work were watching anxiously. I was really kind of waiting too long. This promised to be a difficult shopping experience, and I didn’t have the luxury of sitting around and waiting. But I was. So finally one of my friends (the same girl from my STD [*snort*] stamping adventure), the divine Mrs. M, took charge. We took a day off from work together and decided to dress shop.

In typical cool but type-A fashion, I made a spreadsheet. I lined up appointments for us at four bridal salons, which were carefully placed according to location, traveling time, and appointment time. It was a masterpiece, if I do say so myself.

This is the anal-retentive dress-shopping spreadsheet. Yes, this is what I do.

And, of course, I set out with an idea in mind. After much dress stalking online, I had a gold-standard dress that I wanted, but of course it didn’t exist in the state of Maryland. So it was my inspiration picture as we started our adventure.

Now, I am issuing a warning in advance. I had all of these pictures of different dresses stored neatly on my iPhone. But then it died: some kind of battery problem. The fine folks at Apple replaced it no problem, but since it was dead it couldn’t be powered on. And without powering it on, I couldn’t get to the pictures we had of the dresses I tried on. So I’m going to find stock pictures when I can and supplement with the real thing when I do have it.

Were you intimidated by the dress hunt, or did you dive in with reckless abandon?

That Jasmine gown was on my list of LOOOOVE gowns. I never did find it in Sydney to try on, though. :(

OMG, a spreadsheet for your appointment times? That is intense but I like it! My MacBook crashed twice in the wedding planning process and I lost all my inspiration pictures twice! Glad I had a blog where I blogged about all of it :)

I love that dress! I found my dress by accident in a vintage store a few months before I planned to start looking.

Wow! Way to be organized, Lox! Can you come organize my life for me??
As for the dress search, I was crazy about it-visiting dozens and dozens of stores. Overboard! (but no spreadsheet . . .)

I dread the dress hunt. I’m not a shopper to begin with so I can’t imagine shopping for such an important item.

Good for you! :)

As for me I’m currently “internet stalking”….I have a pretty good idea of what I want & what I would like to spend. But, I don’t want to try anything on until I’m ready to buy! I’m afraid to fall in love with with a dress instantly & not being ready to buy it!

My entire wedding was a flurry of spreadsheets, I can relate.

I, too, was kind of bummed by what was out there in the MD-area in terms of dresses. I had another Jasmine on my list of loves.

PS - what is the font you used for the words ‘GO AWAY’? I have been looking for that font forever.

Whoa! You are SUPER-organized! Amazing!

I knew the basic idea that I wanted for my dress and found it…eventually. Guess I’m a bit picky, but you will find your dress!

Oh, and yeah…I’m totally plus sized, too. My dress is a size 18.

I admit I did try on a few dresses just for the fun of it just to see what I would look like in it. You gotta make it fun ya know!

first, can i just say that i absolutely LOVE your spreadsheet.. i’ve got a psychotic looking spreadsheet that would scary anyone from wedding plan.. it’s my best friend in this process.. haha
(and just in case, it’s on at least 2 computers, a flash drive, and emailed to myself)

the big thing that clued me in to knowing that my dress was THE dress after i first tried it on was that i kept looking for it in other magazines, bridal salons, online. i was clearly sold.

How could one NOT have a spreadsheet of appointment times? I’m with you, Lox.

I am totally scared to go look for a dress. I’m the girl who walks out of DSW because there are too many shoes to chose from! I cringe at the thought of having to answer the sales girls when they ask “what type of dress are you looking for?” I have no idea what I want and what will look flattering on my figure. So YES, I am totally intimidated by “THEE” dress hunt. (biting my nails)

So bummed we can’t see you in the dresses, but it’s gonna make the build up to your recaps even better! Love the Jasmine dress, it’s so beautiful!

My dress hunt started with no idea or clue of what I wanted. It was months long and many many many stores, but eventually it all worked out.

I made nice word docs that had all of that information plus details about each dress that I tried on. Mom became very lax in her duties about taking notes on such things.

I wasn’t super excited to go dress shopping. I’m 5 feet tall and not skinny and things just fit weird on me. We did find a dress after trying about a dozen or so on at only one store which made me super happy. I had worse problems trying to find a dress for my engagement party. This was easy. I’m going back next saturday for a 2nd try on and to purchase it.

I am also in your same situation, and am very intimidated by the whole experience! Can’t wait to continue reading on to yours!

I am really digging all the spreadsheet love. My desk at work may be an unorganized mess (and oh it really is) but my wedding is nice and neat!

@Karen: I didn’t have a chance to look it up last night, but I’ll grab the font name tonight and get it to you. :)

Your inspiration dress was my dress! I still haven’t decided what to do with it now that my wedding is over. It’s so pretty though… Good luck in your dress shopping (if you haven’t found one yet). I know what it’s like to be a plus size bride looking at tiny dresses.
