Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).
About Mrs. Hippo

Now that our invitations have reached most of our guests, it’s time for the full invitation reveal. I’m so excited to show y’all what I’ve been working so hard on! First, the envelope.

Show and Tell Time: The Hippo Invitations - Part 1 : wedding dallas diy invitations stationery Envelop Envelop

I have fairly decent handwriting, so I kept it simple and hand wrote the addresses on the envelopes with a metallic silver gel pen. I actually tried Mrs. Plaid’s calligraphy shortcut, but because the back of the envelopes had been embossed, the embossing was getting screwed up when I was running it through the printer, so I scrapped that idea.

When I took the full invitation to my “friends” at the Post Office, one person said it would cost 61 cents to mail, but he wanted a second opinion. He walked the invitation over to another postal worker who said there would be a 20-cent surcharge because the envelope was stiff…so 81 cents. They debated back and forth and basically told me it was my choice, but that if I only put a 61-cent stamp on it, that it might be returned. Uh…no thank you! I opted to use two 44-cent stamps, and went with the King and Queen stamps. I liked the idea that there were two coordinating stamp designs, instead of using two of the same stamp or two stamps that didn’t match. Plus, with the little hearts on there, how can you not love it?

When guests flip to the back of the envelope, they’ll see our initial logo and our mailing address embossed in silver. I’m not gonna lie, embossing was a huge pain in the ass (as I mentioned here and here), but I think the final product was worth the pain.

And when guests open the envelope? Wait for it….

Instead of using an inner envelope, I used a belly band to indicate the names of the guests that were invited. So, for plus ones, the belly band said, “John Smith and guest.” I’m hoping that people get it.

Up next, what’s behind the belly band…

good idea with the belly band!
Can i ask when pen you used for the calligraphy? I have the same exact envelopes and my mom will do the calligraphy, but I can only find silver metallic ink! I’m hoping to find like a pearl ink or something similar!

@Coleerenee: This is actually a metallic silver pen, but it’s so bright that it has an almost white-like quality. I used a Uniball “Gel Impact” pen in silver that I got at Michael’s. It worked great!

@jackie-o: Yay for the tile pattern!
