Sister Starfish and I are complete opposites in every way. I’ve shared quite a bit about her, as she and I were engaged during the same time for a while. During her engagement, she and BIL Starfish drove me crazy. During the month leading up to their wedding, maybe even longer, they pointed out everything they did as “this is the last time I’ll (you fill in the blank) while I’m still single.”
Whenever Mr. Starfish and I were with them, we’d have to listen to them point out, “This is the last time we’ll have a girls’ night while I’m still single.” “This is the last time we go to a hockey game while we’re still single.” “This is the last time we go to the movies while we’re still single.”
They drove me crazy.
Since Mr. Starfish and I have been married, we’ve been doing the reverse. We had them over for dinner and Mr. Starfish pointed out, “this is the first time we’re having dinner at our house as newlyweds,” and then I remembered him saying a couple days before, “this is the first time we’re making breakfast together as newlyweds.”

I didn’t even realize it until Sister Starfish pointed it out.
Then we laughed that everything she said was about being the last time as a single person, but everything Mr. Starfish said was about the first as a married couple. It’s pretty typical. Mr. Starfish and I are each other’s first loves and knew early on we’d get married. After seven years of being together, it’s fun to be excited about all of the “new” things.
Sister Starfish wasn’t quite sure how she felt about marriage pre-BIL Starfish. She had relationships, a couple longer term ones, but until BILS tied her down, she wasn’t quite sure if she was the marrying type. She liked being single and independent. She loves being adventurous and trying new things, so the single life suited her well.
Luckily, when BIL Starfish asked her to marry him, she said yes. Saying yes was probably the best decision of her life. I’ve never seen my sister so happy. She was able to find someone who lets her be her independent self and continues to be adventurous and try new things.

So, while Mr. Starfish likes pointing out all the firsts, Sister Starfish pointed out all the lasts. It was her way of recognizing the end to her single days. Days that she really enjoyed, but not nearly as much as her married days.
Did you always know marriage was right for you, or did it take a specific person to get you onboard the marriage train?
