So what’s the first thing you did when wedding planning? Instead of doing all of those practical things, like picking a date or a church, I decided to pick a theme. And then another. And then another. Since we’re just starting to get to know each other, I’ll quickly show you the themes that could have been.
1.) Originally, I fell in love with a Breakfast at Tiffany’s theme. The colors: Tiffany blue, black, and silver. I wanted the emphasis to be black, with the blue and silver VERY sporadically sprinkled in so it didn’t look like too much. At this point, I also wanted a very sleek sheath instead of a gown, which probably would have looked HORRID on me. Here is a perfect inspiration board I found to illustrate the theme:
I know you’re thinking, “So beautiful and tasteful! How did this plan go awry? ” Well, I was browsing ModCloth, one of my favorites store for gorgeous affordable dresses, and I discovered…

Beautiful and ONLY $60!!! I let out an audible squeal and KNEW my BMs had to wear this dress. Unfortunately, they were sold out. Sad face. Being the resourceful female I am, I e-mailed the friendly folks at ModCloth, and they assured me that they would have the dress back in stock in a few months. Woohoo! I thought this dress was a bit more navy than indigo, and and the reviews reinforced this thought, so I scrapped my Tiffany theme and moved on to:
2.) Nautical! My sorority was very nautically themed, so it was an idea near and dear to my heart. I wanted to incorporate some vintage into the idea as well. I had visions of a navy, cream, and gold wedding with ideas for nautical ropes tied in different fashions around the centerpieces. At one point I fancied the idea of having a small cardboard boat in the background. In retrospect, I realize this was weird. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that this theme just wasn’t going to work unless we were outside by a body of water, which just isn’t possible where I live. (I live on a lake, ironically enough…people just live lakeside, so there aren’t any venues to accommodate us.) I was leaning toward a hotel-banquet-room wedding because of the sheer size of my wedding: 300–350 people. Banquet rooms aren’t exactly nautical, much to my chagrin.
3.) Well, the BM dresses came in, and to my surprise they were, in fact, about 90% indigo and 10% navy. I would go as far as to call theme grape. The girls all LOVED the dresses, though, so I decided to make lemonade. I changed my theme to vintage and the colors to indigo, cream, and gold. However, this idea got washed as well. So many people were getting engaged around June and stressing me out because I heard their ideas and realized how closely they paralleled my own, so I decided I needed something unique and out there. In other words, I snapped. So here it is, the current out-there, wacky theme:
4.) Mad Hatter Tea Party—not so much Alice in Wonderland, just EXTREMELY whimsical. I’m thinking jewel tones, different patterned table runners, “Eat Me” and “Drink Me” tags, a Mad Hatter cake, which I wanted in the first place, etc. Now I just have to figure out how to make it work. I want the theme to be memorable without being too much (i.e., not like a four-year-old’s birthday party).
How has your theme evolved during the planning process? Anyone snap and come up with an absolutely off-the-wall theme?
