Venue Vents

January 23rd, 2011 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

Today, I wanted to talk a little bit about finding a venue. This was pretty difficult for me. Before I was officially engaged, I had my heart set on getting married at Fallingwater, a home designed by the awesome architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

*swoon*

This dream was dashed after my parents told me how disappointed they would be if I didn’t marry in the Catholic church. Plus, this venue only fits 125 people, and we need room for about 300.

Next, we had to think about a venue that could fit that many people and that was less than 30 minutes from my church. I would have loved to have had the reception at the WVU alumni center, but they were already booked. After that fell through, hotels were the only venues I could find that could accommodate our number of guests. (Can you imagine that many people in a tent?!) I started e-mailing hotels and was having trouble finding packages that included things we wanted for under $200 per person + gratuity + tax. I find this absolutely ridiculous for my region. It would be something I would expect from a large city, but not my little town! There had better be two penny weights of gold in that slightly overcooked chicken before I pay that much!

I did find a gorgeous ballroom in a historic hotel downtown that would have been PERFECT, but it would only fit 175. When I found this out, I totally had a Mary/Joseph moment.

Enter: Lakeview Resort. I had thought of Lakeview since it is close to my home, has beautiful views, and would provide gorgeous photographs. I was so nervous coming into the meeting with the coordinator because if this plan fell through, we may have had to hold the reception at Panera. Luckily, the prices she quoted were far more reasonable than the other packages I was given at the other venues. My mom signed the contract on the spot, and a huge load was lifted from my shoulders. Unfortunately, we couldn’t reserve the room with the view of the lake, as it only fit 250. I truly hope we have at least 251 people showing up to our wedding, or I’m going to be a little irked.

The space is a fairly generic hotel ballroom, so they don’t really advertise photos of it, though there are plenty of pictures of the space with the view of the lake. (Imagine that!) I could have been a total creeper and snatched some photos of my venue off of Facebook, but I decided against it.

Here are a few pictures of the venue’s view.

Did any of you have these headaches while trying to choose a venue? Did it all end up working out in the end, or did you end up with a concussion from smashing your head against a wall?

So sorry over Fallingwater! Lakeview is a gorgeous place though with beautiful views, and thank goodness you didn’t have to settle for Panera :-)

I didn’t realize they even held weddings at Fallingwater. So beautiful there. But the pictures of your venue are lovely.

It’s really funny you mention a reception at Panera. My first wedding dream/nightmare consisted of me overhearing my mother walk into our reception and muttering “Shoulda just gone to Panera.”

Oh, Falling Water would have been nice. Sorry you couldn’t have it there! We’re actually getting married and having our reception at the Alumni Center. I booked it back in Aug. 2009 (long engagement) - and they already had June 2011 weddings booked when I signed our contract. :-O Lakeview will be wonderful, though! Can’t wait to see the pictures. :-) And, yeah, the prices here still get to me too. Such is wedding world, though (I guess).

Miss Biscuit! I recently left Morgantown after getting my undergrad degree at WVU and then teaching at Cheat Lake Elementary. I now live in Salibsury, MD. I recently got married this past summer in Cumberland MD and I am sooo excited to read your blog posts about my favorite town ever :-)

P.S. Did you watch the game today?!

It was actually the opposite problem for me. We knew where we were having the reception, but needed to find a place for the ceremony. Eventually it all worked out, but until we signed the contract I was a little frazzled.

I had the exact same problem! I looked at like 15 places trying to find the perfect outdoor venue for our ceremony/reception. I just the same “I really want you to get married in the Catholic Church” speech. And finally found the perfect location for our reception after months of searching, a lot of IB Profen, and several tears! Glad everything is working out for you now!

@PitBulLover: Yes, I love Fallingwater. It’s so beautiful!

@cjm: You can have the wedding in their barn area. It’s great if you don’t have that many people coming.

@DianaLynn: Haha, you’re wedding nightmares sound like mine!

@mthoma27: I’m the worst fan ever! My grandmother had to call and tell me we were playing. Depending on how long you were at Cheat Lake, you may have seen my sister running around there. She’s in 10th grade now, but went to CLMS (and CLES–but that was a looooonnnnngggg time ago). I went there too, but that was an EXTREMELY long time ago.

That venue looks great - can’t wait to see the rest of it :-)
Unfortunately with such a big guest list the options go down fast… I had the same problem, and was looking for a venue for 100 people!!!!
It sounds like you got a great deal, so this should be a reminder that if you insist and do your homework, things will somehow fall in place :-)

Beautiful venue. I like driving across the lake on I-68 My videographer shot a wedding there that he used for his 2009 demo video. So many nice vistas for pictures outside.

My fiance proposed in August 2010and the day he proposed I was like a horse racing let out for the race. See we knew we wanted to get married 11/11/11. The first week I emailed about 20 places. Our top five places- all booked. We got option number 6 which I’m happy with but every time we drive there we have to pass option number 1 and even though we have a deposit I call and ask if they are still booked. LOL.

I have been reading this blog for a while since I have been planning a wedding this past year and to my surprise their is my venue!! Who would of thought a bride would be planning there too. Looking forward to hearing about your plans and hopefully you can help me with mine. I am getting married there in July and I did get the lake view room - but now thinking I should have gotten the library room, but now it is booked. Too funny! I am working on flowers and transportation now - let me know if you find some good deals!

@kbell724: Small world! I, too, am getting married there in July in the “Governor’s Ballroom” as that’s the only one that can accommodate 300 or more guests.

I don’t think we’re doing transportation. Just not a priority of mine. I know there’s a bunch of companies up in Pittsburgh you can check out though!
