About Mrs. Giraffe

There’s one thing I don’t want to look like on my wedding day. Okay, really, there’s probably more than one thing (others in the list include: crazy person, sleep deprived crazy person, etc), but one thing is like this:

Garlic: Does More Than Just Get Rid of Vampires : wedding chicago health 68965 W If you want to buy them for yourself, go here.

Today I’m going to talk to you about a kind of embarrassing health problem. Warts. See, as far as I know, they don’t really hurt you, but they are obnoxious, annoying, and—again—embarrassing. Nobody wants some lumpy bumpy thing sticking out of their skin. I’ve had my fair share of experiences with them, too.

When I was younger, I had about 3 planters warts on the bottom of my foot. They were on the pads of my foot so I couldn’t get them burned off or anything so I remember going once a week, after soccer practice, and the doctor would use a knife and cut out more of the wart until it was gone. In high school, I got a wart on my elbow that I got frozen off with liquid nitrogen. As a freshman in college, that wart came back and I also had another on my elbow. I got those both frozen off. As a junior in college, I had about five on my hands, but 3 were small. I got two frozen off and the other three burned off with acid. Ugh, what a pain, right?

After I graduated, and as I was (still am) getting closer to the wedding, I noticed I was starting to get about a dozen warts on my arm. They were super small—no bigger than a pin head—but I could finally recognize them so I knew they were there.

Getting warts burned/frozen doesn’t cost more than just my co-pay, but it is ridiculously painful. Getting them frozen is by far the worst pain I’ve ever felt, and it usually take three times for them to go away. Needlessly to say, I was looking for a less painful solution for the future.

So what did I do? Well, I tried the Band-Aids at home freezing treatments (also painful), and at home gel stuff, but nothing worked. I guess I just got a nice strong strain of warts. My doctor says they’re just a virus in your body, and they effect some people more than others.

Well, I bet you can guess what I did next. I did what any smarty pants would do, I went to visit my good ol’ friend, Google. I read a bunch of things people claim work, but, frankly, I’m lazy and cutting off a small piece of banana peel and putting it on my arm with duct tape seemed like too much work. I kept looking until I found the simplest, easiest, and least time consuming solution.

Garlic. Yeah, weird, right? I read online that taking garlic tablets help get rid of warts. I didn’t believe it, but I seemed easy so I gave it a try. I bough the odorless ones (which I highly recommend so you don’t smell like garlic bread), and they taste kind of gross, but I took them daily, and guess what? No more warts. That’s it, they were gone. I could barely believe it. I had warts forever and in about two months, they were no longer!

I would recommend Garlic Tablets to anyone that has a similar problem, but, FYI, from what I’ve noticed, they don’t really work for planter warts (the ones on your feet). I take the Nature Made brand, and I just pick them up at the grocery store. They cost between $9-$16 a box,  which seems like a lot, but it’s less than my co-pay and feels totally worth it to me. It feels really nice to finally clear up something that’s bothered me since middle school.

Anybody else trying to take care of weird health things before the big day?

ahha. Unrelated but I thought it was funny there’s a post about garlic. We LOVE garlic. My husband is convinced in a few years studies will show Garlic cures ALL ailments.
You are obvs proving his theory! :)

How cool that something so simple worked for you! I too love garlic, and eat a lot of it, I guess that’s why I don’t have warts?!

I don’t have this problem, but I have been working on getting my skin in shape. I have dry, blotchy, and bumpy skin all over my body. I am so white that my skin is literally translucent, and that doesn’t help my overall appearance either! So I’ve been trying lotions and potions, body washes and supplements to get my face, arms, and legs ready for the big day!

I used to get a lot of warts when I was a teenager. The freezing method did not work at all after months of steady treatments. They did some sort of laser treatment that worked the first time and I’ve never had them again. It didn’t hurt more than having a rubber band snapped agains your skin (in my opinion much prefered over the pain of having them frozen off). If I ever end up getting them again I’ll have to try this trick. Good tip!

8 oz of purple grape juice a day for 6 - 8 weeks will also work!

P.S. the grape juice works for plantar warts, too!

I’m hoping I won’t be graced with a cold sore–anyone got tips for keeping those nasties away?

That’s crazy - I never would have thought that garlic could help warts! I’ve had one on my right pointer finger for about 3 years now, and it just will NOT go away. I can’t get surgery, however, because I’m a massage therapist and kind of need my hands to be constantly in good shape ;) I will definitely be trying these pills out!

I have a discolored front tooth that I hate. I had a porcelain veneer placed so I wouldn’t look like a hobo in photos!

Would also love to hear anyone’s advice for avoiding cold sores :)

I used to get those, too, when I was little! The freezing is just the WORST. I’m personally trying to get rid of my many sunspots before the wedding. Blegh.

My doctor had me put a little water on each wart and then tape or bandaid an aspirin to the wart over night until they went away. It was cheap and easy but I only did it every few days because it did burn a little bit.

I had no idea that garlic could get rid of warts. I’ve only ever had them on my hands, but I definitely want to get rid of this pesky one I’ve had for a while.
Do you remember how long it took for your warts to go away?
Thanks for the tip!

Lysine is awesome for any virus like a cold sore or warts. Find it by the Vit. C and take one with a multivitamin. Especially around cold season. Thanks Hive!!!

OMG Miss G I could’ve written this myself! I’ve always had warts on my hands. In Junior High they covered my cuticles. It was the most disgusting disformed looking thing ever. I almost fainted due to the pain when I got them burned off professionally. They have calmed down substantially since my hormones returned to normal but I might try the garlic to get rid of my last two. Thanks for the tip! I’m glad to hear you are wart-less.

Thanks for the information. I have horrible plantar’s warts, like a full circle of about ten or so on one foot and a good number on the other foot. They don’t hurt but definitely don’t make my foot look nice. Thanks for the garlic advice, I tend to get warts on my hands and arms every once and awhile too. So I will have to try taking garlic tablets, maybe I’ll get lucky and it with help my plantar’s warts too.

@Heidi: @therascalqueen:
I get cold sores a lot, as do my mother and brothers!
Anyway, don’t know of a way to prevent it but when I do get it Zovirax works like a charm! Usually 2-3 days to get it where it’s barely noticeable. But it’s prescription only but if you get it a lot and your doc knows s/he shouldn’t have a problem writing you a scrip.

Really?! I had no idea! I’ve been lucky and haven’t dealt much with warts, but my sister gets them. I’ll be passing this along to her. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve never had warts but I do have a small, blood filled perma bump (gross I know!) under my nose and it just looks like a huge constant pimple. I didn’t do anything about it for the wedding and it does show in a few pictures. I wonder if there are any natural remedies for it? Time to start Googling!
