About Miss Oatmeal

Pretty, Pretty Paper

January 24th, 2011 @ 1:02 pm by Miss Oatmeal

Oh, invitations.

I have a bookmarked folder in my browser that I’ve been adding to…constantly. Since becoming engaged, I’ve been inspired by so many different types of invitation designs, and they are all sitting pretty in that folder of mine. As with most wedding decisions, I was all over the place with what I liked. But since the beginning, one thing has remained steady:

I love paper. I love thick, luxurious paper. I love letterpress. I love simple, yet beautiful designs made perfect by the perfect paper.

That was certainly more than one thing, so why not add to the list of things that have remained constant?

None of these things I love has found its way into our budget.

So, we must find a way to incorporate the elements of the invitations I love into a more budget-friendly version. Will I feel as warm and fuzzy about them if they aren’t letterpress or on the thickest, most wonderful paper? Probably not, but I’ll deal.

I need to accept the fact that most people don’t appreciate paper the way I (and maybe three other friends) do and our guests likely won’t think twice about the “feel” of our invitations. Hell, they’ll probably be put in a drawer or tossed out. I’ve been living in wedding-blog land for so long now, and the reality is, hive, that no one really cares about paper like we do. It’s so tragic.

The good news is that I’ve narrowed down what I want considerably. So now it’s on to a few pictures of what I hope to accomplish (minus the letterpress, paper quality, and hefty price tag).

I clearly like the whole “name running off the page” thing, huh? Now we’re at a point where I need to do some research. Maybe we’ll pay a calligrapher to do just our names in a digital format. Then we could just drop that image into a simple invitation design. As for the paper, I’ll have to visit stationery stores or order samples online before I make a decision.

Is there something you really wanted but just couldn’t fit into your budget? I don’t know why I even ask—of course that answer is yes.

Any suggestions for me?

Oh, I think I bookmarked all of those images too! I am right there with you with my love of invites and paper, and there was no way our budget fit any of that. So, I made do (and made our own), and continue to drool over all the other ones I see online!

Heck yes! We had to say goodbye to pretty letterpress too, sad sad sad, but everyone keeps telling me that at the end of the day it won’t matter a bit. (still wanted letterpress, I’m pouting haha)

I loved the look and feel of letterpress, but not the price, as well. I decided to do a heat embossed stamp for texture instead. What if you had a stamp made with your names, that you could have run off the page like you like, and then stamp and emboss just that section? You could pre-print the rest on decent but not super fancy paper. Just an idea. It also would make printing easier, since most printers don’t do full bleed.

I would print them digitally on good quality paper and then get them dry embossed at a local scrapbook store. Same look but without the cost. Seriously. I ADORE paper too. Personally I notice when I get budget invites to weddings. Like my cousin who bought invites from the $2 shop… I wish I didn’t judge but as a scrapbooker and a lover of paper crafts my heart cries a little at that (and by a little I mean a LOT!)

you can still have fancy paper without letterpress. fabriano medioevalis and arturo stationery are two lines that have deckle/torn edge cards (flat & folded notes) and matching envelopes. this type of thick textured stock even works in most inkjet printers. i use it all the time. do you have a dick blick’s in fresno? if not, there’s one in SF, but if you’re in SF you should go to Flax art & design… the best stationery/paper/art supply place ever, but i’m biased, i used to work there. :)

Oh, and PS: Mrs. Gloss used really thick, awesome paper but didn’t use letterpress. Not sure if you have access to silkscreening, though, which is what she did …

OK, I may have just squealed out loud in a crowded student lounge. I looked at your first inspiration photo and thought to myself, “that looks strikingly similar to FH’s cousin’s invitation.” and then I looked at your second inspiration photo and it IS FH’s cousin’s invitation! I feel weirdly famous that I know these people and went to their wedding and now they’re (at least partially) inspiring a post on WB!!!!!

I’m loving your inspiration, and think that you have some great ideas - and I can totally relate to the paper love. Long before I ever thought about weddings, my favorite store was Two Hands Paperie…floor to ceiling paper, pens, journals….love.

Hi ladies! The second invitation was designed by Lucky Luxe Couture Correspondence and we just happen to offer print-at-home options for all our Collection and Bespoke design work. If letterpress isn’t in your budget, but you still want the design this might be perfect for you. :)

I forgot to let you know—Jessica’s design above is the ‘Boston’ design: http://www.lucky-luxe.com/boston.html

It’s available for print-at-home too.

I love that look too! And I love me some letterpress and thick paper. But judging by how many people requested our address the DAY OF THE WEDDING! I think you are right, people do disregard invitations. There are definitely affordable options out there that achieve the same-ish look!

if you want calligraphy, you might consider talking to your local SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) branch. They do medieval calligraphy for fun and might accept commissions…

I felt the same way. I digitally stalked letterpress websites/designs, drooling over each and every detail. Unfortunately it just wasn’t in the budget. Like you mentioned, also pointed out to me by FI, most guests wouldn’t even care about the quality of our invitations.

So, after considering other options, I decided to design our our invitations. Not a full DIY, but I did design the layout (fonts, graphics) and then uploaded them to a website to be professionally printed. They won’t be letter pressed, but at least they have the visual appeal of the ones I fell in love with.

We have gotten them yet, but I’m pretty excited!

I dont’ know what your budget is, but I just got my invitations done by a great little place in Clovis. They turned out amazing. The prices were pretty standard, but her personal attention to detail was great. And…..our invitation will be one of a kind because she designed it just for us. If you want her info, send me a message and I will get it to you. Also, I could figure out getting a couple pictures of mine to you if you wanted.

I love letterpress. I wish it was in my budget. Maybe I’ll just copy you instead?
